00:00What if catching COVID today could damage your kidneys tomorrow?
00:03New research reveals something alarming.
00:05Getting COVID does not just affect your lungs.
00:08It could raise your risk of deadly kidney disease by more than 50%.
00:12Scientists at Penn State College of Medicine studied the health records of 3 million Americans.
00:17What they found was shocking.
00:19People who had COVID were 54% more likely to develop kidney disease within a year
00:24compared to those who never had the virus.
00:26Kidney disease happens when your kidneys can no longer filter toxins from your blood properly.
00:32It already affects 7.2 million people in the UK, and it kills around 45,000 every year.
00:38Now experts fear those numbers could climb even higher.
00:42The virus is believed to directly infect the kidneys and cause lasting damage.
00:46That damage may not show up right away.
00:49It could appear months later.
00:51Professor Nasser Karamani warns that COVID patients may need long-term kidney monitoring,
00:57especially people with diabetes, obesity, or high blood pressure.
01:00COVID may feel like a short-term illness.
01:02But for some, the consequences could last a lifetime.
01:06Your kidneys might be at risk.
01:08Even after you recover.
