00:00From German TV to the White House, how are AI videos shaping the ICE narrative?
00:09In Germany, broadcaster CDF caused a stir when it removed one of its U.S. correspondents from
00:15her position. But what was the reason? Well, on the 15th of February, the journalist produced
00:20a report featuring a video of a woman and two children being arrested by U.S. Immigration
00:25and Customs Enforcement, otherwise known as ICE. But the video was AI-generated, as you
00:31can see by the sore watermark. CDF has apologised, but these incidents are becoming increasingly
00:36common as AI-generated videos become more sophisticated. Detection firm TrueScam detected
00:42that one private Instagram account had posted nearly 200 fake ICE clips. In them, ICE agents
00:48are chased out of churches, confronted in schools and seen fighting with baristas, with the content
00:54racking up more than 2 million views altogether. For TrueScan's AI experts, the giveaway signs
00:59are subtle but consistent. For instance, here you can see smoke rising through a solid surface.
01:05AI-generated videos of ICE agents turning up at events have also spread on Facebook. And
01:10the use of digitally altered ICE footage stretches up to the highest echelons of public office.
01:15In January, the White House shared this AI-manipulated photo of a woman called Nakeema Levy Armstrong,
01:21who was arrested for allegedly organising anti-ICE protests. Armstrong has said she was disgusted
01:27by the image, which artificially added tears to the real image of her arrest.
01:32White House officials said the memes will continue when asked about the post.
01:36On the other hand, when Alex Peretti was shot by ICE in January, many social media users questioned
01:41whether the footage was real, arguing it was AI. The situation suggests that AI videos now
01:46contribute to shaping the public perception about politically sensitive issues such as ICE's
01:52actions.
