Greece's second city finally has its metro. Georgios Zygogiannis, Director of Operation and Maintenance, describes how the project opened "a whole new book" for Thessaloniki — preserving ancient history while reducing traffic and transforming urban life.

00:00This was like a whole new book for the history of Thessaloniki,
00:05a fully automated driverless metro.
00:14This project has a tremendous added value
00:18in terms both of convenience to the public,
00:21environmental benefits,
00:23but also a shift in the mindset of the people of this city.
00:34We serve an average of 100,000 passengers per day,
00:39and we are in the position to declare an almost 15% reduction of traffic downtown.
00:48We are very happy that we managed to preserve the antiquities that were found along the way.
00:57We are standing in Venice,
00:59that is probably the only archaeological place in the world that is underground,
01:08and that is mated with a metro station as well.
