00:09All right, gentlemen, you received the instructions in the dressing room.
00:12Know what I expect?
00:13A good, clean fight.
00:17Golpe legales, legal punches here for you.
00:20Legal punches, golpe legales here for you.
00:22Touch goals go to both of you.
00:24Can Elgineral Emiliano Vargas continue his rapid rise
00:29and remain undefeated?
00:31Or can Sugar Quintana from Argentina pull off a stunner here tonight
00:38and halt Vargas in his tracks?
00:41Listo! Listo!
00:43Box!
00:44Scheduled for ten rounds.
00:46You know, I used to spar with Fernando Vargas about 25 years ago,
00:51and looking at Emiliano Vargas, I'm just going back in time.
00:56He looks exactly the way his father looked when he was in great shape,
00:59from the looks to the body frame to the speed and the quick hands.
01:03And he is tremendously powerful with that right hand.
01:06He's got power in both hands, but that straight right is absolutely brutal.
01:10And you saw the quickness from Vargas.
01:13But Sergio, he doesn't seem to have that same mean streak his father was known for.
01:16And maybe that's going to be a good thing for him,
01:19because that's what got his father in trouble.
01:21That toughness, those goal harnesses, it's that willingness to bleed.
01:26The thing about Emiliano Vargas is he's more of a boxer than a puncher.
01:31It just comes.
01:32He doesn't go looking for the knockouts.
01:33They just come behind technique, patience, and, of course, power.
01:37If you're Quintana, you don't want to get too aggressive
01:40in these first couple of rounds.
01:42Ten of Emiliano's 13 knockouts have come inside two rounds.
01:46This is where he has proven to be the most dangerous.
01:49Look, I think Emiliano Vargas has temperament over his great father,
01:54and that last name has the skill.
01:57But whenever it comes to on the biggest level, on the highest level,
02:01to get to superstar status, you need to have a clean head on your shoulders.
02:08Emiliano Vargas went the ten-round distance for the first time
02:11in his last fight against Jonathan Montrell.
02:13He did win a dominant decision, but said,
02:15I learned more in that fight than any of my other ones, Sergio.
02:18The early knockouts are great, but I need some seasoning.
02:22Yeah, that's exactly what, you know, a lot of prospects need.
02:25But, you know, the knockouts feel good, and they look great on your resume.
02:29But if you want to become one of the best in the division,
02:32you need to go some rounds, and you need to get tested.
02:34Stop! No, no, no, I'm here.
02:35I know that fighters say they don't get paid for overtime.
02:39They want to get fights out, fights done quickly.
02:42But watching that fight, it felt like Emiliano was playing with his food a little bit.
02:46He scored a knockdown, had Montrell hurt a couple of times.
02:49It felt like he wanted to get rounds in that fight.
02:51Beautiful left hand.
02:51This is the thing about Vargas.
02:52Everything is dictated off that left hand.
02:55From a jab to the hook to the uppercut,
02:57nothing happens with him offensively unless it's guided by an educated left hand.
03:03And a big, deep breath, and Kitana, after a pretty good body shot, landed from Vargas.
03:07Right now, Vargas literally not breaking a sweat.
03:14Kitana's got some great facial reactions.
03:17He tells you the whole story just with his face.
03:19Now, Kitana's a tough guy, but he has been stopped before,
03:22and that was down at 135 pounds.
03:24So this is going to be a new kind of power for him up at 140.
03:29Kitana, a former South American and Argentinian national champion.
03:33Good right hand there on the end for Kitana.
03:37Yeah, Vargas stayed on the southpaw stance,
03:39and he got hit with the overhand right.
03:44Double!
03:53Hey, hands up tight.
03:56Move your head, side of side.
04:03Move your waist, I don't need more body shots.
04:12Look, you got to keep touching him, touching him, and hit him with the big shots.
04:15You're surprising with that power.
04:17But I need you calm.
04:20Look, you move.
04:21We know you're a badass.
04:22But calm.
04:28Stay calm.
04:29Those punches are going to come.
04:30I want you to stay patient.
04:33Look, from that southpaw stance, surprising him with that straight left hand.
04:38That's a beautiful shot.
04:39He received Vargas with a beautiful combination, splitting him right up the middle with that uppercut.
04:45Beautiful shot to the body, and that's going to set up right hands right down the pipe.
04:49Yeah, and I often question when guys switch stances.
04:52I only think there's a few fighters really in modern boxing history that can do it at a high level.
04:57Terrence Crawford, of course, at the top of that list.
04:59But Emiliano's pretty smooth with how he switches stances.
05:02And pretty smooth rolling under punches.
05:04I mean, offensively and defensively, this kid has it.
05:08Of course, Emiliano Vargas, the youngest of three boxing brothers.
05:12Fernando Jr., 29 years old, 17-1 record.
05:16Amato Vargas is 25.
05:17He's 13-0.
05:18But, Chris, I think you'll agree, Emiliano considered to be the best of the brothers and a potential world champion.
05:24Yeah, the other brothers are good fighters.
05:25But Emiliano has the potential to be a star.
05:28And I think the reason that I think Emiliano...
05:32Oh, nice counter shot from Quintana.
05:35His temperament.
05:36I said it again already.
05:37It's the fact that this kid has a good, even-keel head on his shoulders.
05:40And he thinks different.
05:41He reacts different.
05:42He stays composed differently.
05:44And that's what he has over Junior and Amato, I believe.
05:46I tell you, he reacted to that right hand for Quintana.
05:48That was a tremendous shot by Augustin Quintana.
05:51Sometimes too much bravado and passion turn against you, you know, and it turns against a lot of, you know,
05:57macho-type fighters.
05:59Vargas has a little bit of everything.
06:02You know, Quintana's one of those guys we were talking to about this week that only really wants to be
06:07in big fights.
06:08He had been turning down some fights over the last year because they weren't big enough.
06:13He was actually scheduled to fight Raymond Moritaya last year, but he had some visa issues getting out of Argentina.
06:19So he's looking for those big fights.
06:20He fought a stay-busy fight in December.
06:22He said he took that fight basically for free because he just wanted to get in the ring and shake
06:25some of that rust off.
06:26But this is the exact type of fight that Quintana's been looking for.
06:29Yeah, he said even Dalton Smith was floated as a potential opponent last April, but Dalton Smith turned him down.
06:36Yeah, Quintana's a spoiler.
06:38You know, he's experienced 25 fights under his belt.
06:42He knows how to fight.
06:43He knows how to look.
06:44That shoulder right there shows you that this kid...
06:46Nice left there from Quintana.
06:48This kid could fight, man, and if you're not careful with him, he can make you look bad.
06:51So this is going to be a difficult fight for Vargas the longer it goes.
06:56Well, he certainly doesn't lack any confidence.
06:58He told us after he beats Vargas tonight, he wants Shakur Stevenson next.
07:02Why not, right?
07:04You got to love these Argentinian fighters, man.
07:06They have confidence to spare.
07:09I think Quintana got the respect of Vargas in this round.
07:14He landed two big shots that got the attention of Emiliano.
07:17Good right hand to the body landed by Quintana right there.
07:20Vargas was expecting a shot upstairs, and he guided it way down to the rib section.
07:25Clever fighter.
07:26And that's what I was talking about with a tricky fighter like Quintana.
07:30Watch your head, guys.
07:31Be out of the head.
07:32Okay?
07:33Okay?
07:34Here we go.
07:35Ten seconds to go here.
07:37Round two.
07:37Good round for the Argentinian.
07:39Para la campana.
07:46Time.
08:00How do you feel, Augustin?
08:02I'm good.
08:05Breathe deep.
08:09Great counterpunching.
08:10I love your counterpunches.
08:21No, wipe my eyebrows.
08:22Wipe my eyebrows.
08:23Too much Vaseline.
08:28You need to stay concentrated.
08:33Beautiful counter shots right there.
08:35It caught Vargas off guard.
08:36You can see it did a little funny off-balance dance.
08:39But look, shoulder rolls like that,
08:40that takes a lot of athleticism, guys.
08:42It's not easy to do something like that.
08:45So I got to give a lot of credit to Quintana.
08:47This kid came to win.
08:48He has a lot of tricks up his sleeve.
08:49Yeah, and Quintana is a fighter comfortable going the distance.
08:52You watch that fight back against Mark Castro.
08:54He had a lot of success in the second half of that fight.
08:58Body punches landed through two rounds.
09:00Vargas 21, Quintana 4.
09:03Good body shot there by Vargas.
09:05He's going to need more body shots
09:06because Quintana has good upper body movement.
09:08He has a good radar.
09:11Chris, how did you score the first two rounds?
09:13Yeah, I have it one round apiece.
09:1419 to 19.
09:16Miliano Vargas, clean win in that first round.
09:18But those right hands that landed from Quintana,
09:21I thought they were the most impactful punches of the round.
09:23I gave him that second dead even through two rounds.
09:26Yeah, Vargas is going to have to stay patient,
09:29stay disciplined, and keep digging downstairs.
09:31I think the upper body movement of Quintana is really tricky.
09:33So he's going to have to settle for jabs and body work
09:37if your Vargas break down this tough Argentinian.
09:42Quintana has not scored a stoppage win since November of 2022.
09:48He's a distance fighter, but does have plenty of pop.
09:50He showed some of that in round two.
09:53And, Sergio, you're right about those body shots.
09:55Quintana clearly keeping that guard high.
09:58Those shots are going to be there for Miliano Vargas.
10:01You just have to be content in remaining patient and disciplined
10:05if you're Vargas, and get what you can get downstairs.
10:11And stay shot defensively like he's doing right now.
10:14You know, this is a chapter we need to see from a hot prospect.
10:18We want to see what he looks like when he gets hit,
10:20when things aren't going his way, when he's being backed up,
10:23when he's being pushed to the limit.
10:24That's when you know what you really have.
10:26And tonight, I think Quintana's going to push him to those limits.
10:30In his last bout, I said it was a unanimous decision win.
10:32He only lost one round, according to two judges.
10:35So, a dominant performance.
10:37Good body shot there by Vargas.
10:39This fight already more competitive.
10:41Look, we saw in the last fight with Abel Ramos,
10:45the body shots paid off eventually.
10:47And that's what we're seeing early on from Miliano Vargas,
10:49committing to those body shots that'll hopefully pay off
10:52in the second half.
10:54And even if they're jabs, you know,
10:56gut them downstairs with jabs, power jabs if you're Vargas.
10:59You know, keep Quintana on the back foot.
11:02Keep him on his heels, then you can unleash some combinations.
11:05Another great body shot there by Vargas.
11:06Quintana landed a couple of power punches upstairs as well.
11:09Yeah, I think Vargas sent something there.
11:14Yeah, he got the attention of Quintana with the left hook to the body.
11:17You can see the right arm dropping to protect those ribs.
11:20He makes that same face you do, Sergio.
11:23I've seen it many times.
11:25Both those guys exchange hooks there.
11:27Believe me, man, I see a lot of myself in Quintana, man.
11:35But if you're gonna be a champ, you gotta deal with all kinds of unorthodox looks from fighters.
11:40You never know what you're gonna get.
11:54Up next, our main event.
11:57And on paper, it looks like it could be, Sergio and Chris, a fight of the year contender.
12:02I think it could be, and I think it probably will be.
12:04And this man, Emmanuel Navarrete, is out to show that he has something left.
12:09Not a great performance last time out against Charlie Suarez.
12:12One of the things his team told me was that for this fight, he used a nutritionist for the first
12:17time in his pro career.
12:18And that made it a lot easier to get down to 130 pounds.
12:22This guy made 130 as easy as he ever has.
12:25You can see the best on Navarrete tonight.
12:28This is a can't-miss main event.
12:30So be prepared for Mexican wars.
12:32It's gonna be a bloody, beautiful fight.
12:34I hope everyone enjoys it.
12:37That is next, live here from Glendale, Arizona.
12:43Right now, still some work to do for Emiliano Vargas.
12:46Watch the bucket behind you there.
12:48Who promised to win in dominant fashion.
12:51He said, I think I'm gonna win every round.
12:52But according to Chris, he didn't win the second.
12:58This is gonna be a difficult test.
13:01You know, a difficult puzzle.
13:03For Emiliano Vargas to figure out.
13:05He's gonna have to stay disciplined and look for a way to break down Quintana.
13:11And that way's gonna be a body shot, just like that.
13:13Good left hook to the body by Vargas.
13:16You can see the arms drop quickly from Quintana.
13:19And Vargas landed the right to the body.
13:25You guys had Fernando Vargas on your Fighter and the Rider podcast yesterday.
13:30And Sergio, he said, listen, the reason that Emiliano is so good, he's 100% full-time athlete, 24 hours
13:37a day.
13:38Doesn't drink, doesn't do any of the naughty things that I used to do.
13:41He's got his head on straight.
13:42Yeah, and I love how honest Fernando Vargas, his father was.
13:48I mean, just brutal honesty.
13:49But now he's more proud being a championship father than he was being a championship fighter.
13:54And I loved every minute of that interview.
13:57We got a small cut under the right eye, caught by a punch.
14:00Red corner.
14:01You heard Raul Caez Jr., the referee, announcing it on the microphone what happened.
14:06Didn't need my help.
14:08Look at the power body shots.
14:1013 to 1 for Vargas.
14:12That's gonna be his MO for this fight.
14:14He's gonna have to settle for chopping the tree down because getting a clean shot upstairs is gonna be really
14:20hard for Vargas.
14:22Quintana is a clever cagey fighter to land with one solid shot upstairs.
14:29There we go.
14:30See that touch him upstairs just to dig down to the body.
14:33Vargas making the needed adjustments that I want to see from his hot prospect.
14:40Right hand, not much behind it there from Quintana.
14:45We got a cut over the right eye, accidental headbutt, red corner over the right eye.
14:53You said the main event was gonna be bloody Sergio.
14:55Looks like Quintana's gonna start bleeding here.
14:57A great eye by Raul Caez Jr., catching that.
15:04Vargas complaining about a low blow, seemed to be unintentional.
15:09Nice chopping right hand there by Quintana.
15:12Right hand there from Vargas just misses.
15:15Vargas, Quintana has only been stopped once in his career.
15:19He was knocked out in the fifth round by a fellow Argentine, Juan Javier Carrasco.
15:23That was back in December of 2022.
15:26You can see that Vargas is trying to play possum on the back foot right there.
15:29He's trying to land a nice, clean counter left hand.
15:32Quintana didn't fall for it.
15:35You've seen Quintana a couple of times blow his nose off the canvas.
15:39That tells me that maybe that jab of Vargas is starting to pay off there.
15:44And Quintana has not one but two cuts around his right eye.
15:48Watch your hands.
15:49Here we go.
15:49Here we go.
15:50Hawks, watch the bell.
15:51Time.
15:51Oh, we'll be right here.
16:06Take a deep breath.
16:15Hey, he landed good counter shots on you right there.
16:23I need you to win this run, you understand?
16:26Boxing.
16:28Stay off the ropes.
16:29I need you to land that right hand upstairs.
16:40Cut onto the right eye.
16:42And there's that left hand I was talking about where Vargas was playing possum against the ropes.
16:46He let Quintana come to him.
16:48And it's a clever strategy by a guy that's normally on the front foot.
16:52Box.
16:53Nice body shot there, borderline by Quintana.
16:56He's a clever, tricky fighter.
16:58And Vargas doing the right thing.
17:00Staying patient and aiming downstairs for the body.
17:03Right hand scores for Quintana.
17:06Who, Chris, has had some decent moments in this fight.
17:08He's had some good moments, especially when landing that right hand.
17:11But the body work of Vargas has just been relentless.
17:14He has been digging downstairs all throughout these first four rounds.
17:18And I'll tell you what, if Emiliano Vargas wanted rounds, you know, to evolve as a better fighter, he's getting
17:25it now.
17:27Chris's scorecard, three rounds to one for Vargas.
17:30Yeah, three rounds to one, 39, 37, mostly based on the body work of Emiliano.
17:35But I tell you, Augustine Quintana having a pretty good round, or at least starting the round right now.
17:38And a body shot there from Quintana.
17:40Vargas says it's low.
17:41I don't think so.
17:42No, he's already landed two clean shots.
17:44Well, not clean, but Quintana landed good, two good left hands downstairs.
17:48They were blocked.
17:49Stop, stop.
17:49Hey, hey, hey.
17:50And you can see Vargas doesn't like those body shots.
17:53Yeah, that one was definitely low.
17:56Yeah, but the...
17:59Time evaluation.
18:01It's all right.
18:02No, it slipped down, but it's all right.
18:04This was the movement.
18:05Take your time.
18:09Another good call by Raul Karu Jr.
18:11Because the third one was low, but the two before that...
18:14It was the movement in you guys' positioning.
18:16The two before that were blocked, but there were clean shots by Quintana down first.
18:22Here's the replay.
18:23I don't want you to watch back down.
18:25Okay, do the same.
18:25I don't know about the idea of movement either.
18:29Like Vargas was camped out in that corner.
18:32He took a clean, low blow from...
18:33I think it was the movement of his left hand to the genitalia of Vargas.
18:37That was the movement.
18:40Yeah, but that's what Quintana wants to do.
18:42He wants to be on the front foot against Emiliano Vargas.
18:45Make him into a counter puncher.
18:47Yeah, I agree.
18:48And he's been having success, Quintana has, when he has Vargas on the back foot.
18:52Yeah, Vargas is camped against the ropes.
18:54I don't know if he wants to be there, guys.
18:55And I love the dedication to the body by Quintana.
18:58He knows that Vargas didn't like those body shots.
19:05Counter right and then a left from Quintana.
19:07He's doing a lot better in this fight than many people thought he would.
19:10Yes, he is.
19:11And I knew he was cagey.
19:12I didn't think he was this smart, actually.
19:15I love the punch selection.
19:17Oh, there's a nice left there from El General.
19:24But you can see the confidence growing in Sugar Quintana.
19:29Yeah, he'll serve Vargas right to counter to the body.
19:32I know he loves headshots.
19:33He's a power puncher.
19:34But for this fight, he's going to have to check that tough guy, check that power puncher,
19:38and just keep picking and pecking and vesting in the body.
19:42Every counter shot should be downstairs if you're Emiliano Vargas.
19:48Just like that.
19:49Beautiful counters downstairs.
19:53Vargas, the 2025 Ring Magazine Prospect of the Year.
19:59Just blasted through all of his opponents.
20:02But he's not having quite the same success so far here in this fight.
20:08And that speaks volumes on Augustine Quintana.
20:11You've got to give this man credit.
20:13Checking the fight.
20:16Well, he said he accepted the Vargas fight without hesitation.
20:20In fact, we wanted him.
20:22And he's got him tonight in another solid round.
20:32Earlier, we saw Navarrete in the back.
20:34And there is Sugar Nunez.
20:37And Sergio, this guy is built like a tank.
20:40He was knocking out people left and right.
20:43But his last two fights have gone the distance.
20:45Does that say anything to you?
20:46It says that that power is questionable.
20:49You know, even though he looks like Mexican Hercules right there,
20:52I mean, he's very muscular.
20:54I'm not accustomed to seeing a muscular frame like that
20:57from a lot of these Mexican champions.
20:58But that man has strength.
21:00He has power.
21:00But he's going to have to prove that he has IQ against a fighter like Navarrete
21:05who's going to match him toughness for toughness and power for power.
21:08Yeah, I think Nunez is going to have to survive an early storm for Navarrete.
21:12But he is a very disciplined boxer.
21:15If he finds a way to punch between the punches of Navarrete,
21:18who is a wild puncher, I think some of that power could pay off.
21:24That's our main event coming up next, live here from Arizona.
21:30Still plenty of miles to go in this track
21:33between Miliano Vargas and Sugar Quintana.
21:37Round six scheduled for ten.
21:39To make a case, Quintana's won a couple rounds.
21:44If he hasn't won rounds, he's won respect from Vargas, I could say that.
21:50Vargas turning southpaw now, trying to get a different angle.
21:54I don't know if that's frustration from him
21:56or just him being comfortable and confident
21:59knowing that he can land something from that left-handed stance.
22:03Did you do a lot of switch hitting when you were training, Sergio?
22:06All the time.
22:06And I did it in my fights as well.
22:08But I wasn't offensive with that.
22:10I just wanted to give my fighters a different look
22:13with my posture.
22:13But I never really reacted off that southpaw stance.
22:17Good left there from Quintana.
22:22Round five, total punches land at Quintana, 19, Sergio, 11 for Vargas.
22:26Now, Quintana's in this fight, and he got the respect of Vargas,
22:29and he needs to work off that confidence and that momentum
22:34shifting in his favor.
22:36And it starts with body shots like that.
22:37Quintana is a really good puncher downstairs.
22:40So Vargas being tested like he's never been tested before
22:44in this, his 17th professional fight.
22:47And a clever fighter is Quintana.
22:49From the southpaw stance, he threw an overhand left
22:52that caught the attention of Vargas.
22:56Chris, how would you rate what you're seeing so far from Emiliano?
23:00It's a very tough fight.
23:02Look, and this is what I think top rank was looking for
23:05when they matched Emiliano with Quintana.
23:08They were looking for someone to press him a little bit,
23:10not just someone that could be durable,
23:11but someone that could throw back,
23:13and that's what we're getting from Quintana right now.
23:17Stiff right hand of the body, falls over the left of the body.
23:20If he's going to give it to you, Emiliano's going to take it.
23:23And that's what I've been saying that Emiliano needs.
23:25You know, just forget about the head right now
23:27and just start digging away downstairs.
23:29Oh, big power shot from Quintana.
23:31Another nap-10 landed by Quintana.
23:34Emiliano's never been down, never even come close to going down,
23:37but, man, if Quintana keeps landing more of those
23:42as blood trickles out of one of his two cuts around his right eye.
23:49Well, Sergio, you said earlier
23:50when you've got a bright prospect like Vargas,
23:54you want to see how he handles adversity,
23:56see what happens when he's eating a couple of power punches.
23:58We're about to learn.
24:00Now, we're going to find out because, look,
24:01whenever you're knocking everyone out like Vargas was,
24:03and you get a cagey, tricky, smart fighter like Quintana,
24:08you're going to discover yourself.
24:10You're going to find out what you're made of,
24:11and if you have, you know, Pan B and C,
24:13you know, because Pan A has been good to you.
24:18This is the first time Quintana has ever fought in the United States.
24:22Left hand lands.
24:24The first time he's fought here, but it's not the last.
24:26I like what I see from Arustin Quintana.
24:34He's got a big fan.
24:36Heavyweights collide.
24:38Fabio Worley, Daniel Dubois.
24:39What a matchup this is going to be.
24:41An extremely intense face-off this past week
24:43at their official launch press conference.
24:46Two British heavyweights collide
24:48with a WBO world heavyweight title
24:51on May the 9th in Manchester.
25:00Quintana swinging away.
25:02If that punch, Todd, would have landed
25:04a half an inch better, it would have done damage,
25:07and we probably would have seen Vargas hurt.
25:09You don't want to get hit in the tip of the chin like that,
25:12and Quintana catching him behind the guard.
25:15I've been saying it this entire fight.
25:17He may be behind, in my opinion,
25:20but Quintana is in this fight.
25:22Let's go, Sucatel, mouthpiece in.
25:25Mouthpiece.
25:29Let's take a step back for me, please.
25:31Here we go.
25:34Well, Sergio, we are in round number seven,
25:37and you can make an argument,
25:39I think a real argument,
25:40that Quintana has won half of the round so far.
25:44Maybe I'm crazy.
25:46But let's look at Chris Maddox's scorecard.
25:48And he's got it even.
25:49Three rounds for Quintana.
25:52You're not crazy,
25:53and obviously now we're seeing that Chris Maddox is not crazy
25:56because Quintana,
25:59he's been countering beautifully,
26:01and he's confident,
26:01and he's punch for punch for Vargas.
26:04Let's check in with Chris Maddox,
26:05who's in the corner of Vargas.
26:07Fernando, what are you seeing out there?
26:10It's a little tight.
26:11It's a little tight, but he's...
26:12But I'm just doing the work that I need him to do.
26:14Good!
26:15Like that!
26:16AsÃ, pico!
26:17SÃguere!
26:18No le gustó!
26:19How does he stay away from those right hands?
26:21Because I told him he has to watch his counters.
26:23As soon as his answers,
26:25he goes to the body,
26:26the answer's back good.
26:27Hands up!
26:28Hands up!
26:29Boy, these guys are going back and forth.
26:31This is not the kind of fight
26:32that we expected Vargas would have to be in.
26:34No, but look,
26:35this is the type of fight he needed to be in
26:37because now he's going to become a better fighter.
26:40He's going to have to find a way to win, man.
26:42He's facing adversity here in a tight fight
26:44against a man that came to win at Quintana.
26:47And keep in mind,
26:48Vargas, according to Vegas odds,
26:50Sergio,
26:51an 18-1 favorite here in this fight.
26:54Wow.
26:56Quintana,
26:57you know,
26:58I didn't expect him to be this clever
27:00in the counterpunching department.
27:03And Vargas got the respect.
27:05So Vargas is going to win this fight.
27:06He's going to be downstairs.
27:08It's not going to be headshots.
27:09He is not going to land nothing clean upstairs
27:12against Agustin Quintana,
27:13who's a very clever, slick fighter
27:16with his upper body movement.
27:18Well, Quintana is the first opponent Vargas has faced
27:20with over 20 wins as a pro.
27:22And that experience is shining through right now.
27:26Chris, we showed your card while you were gone.
27:29Sorry.
27:30Except, look, you got it even.
27:31No, I don't.
27:32I have four rounds to two
27:33that favor Emiliano.
27:34The last round that was inaccurate on the screen there.
27:37Four rounds to two,
27:38but it is a competitive fight.
27:39I think Emiliano is up in this fight.
27:41But Quintana keeps coming forward
27:42and he keeps landing that right hand.
27:44Emiliano can't get out of the way of that right hand.
27:47But I've got through six,
27:48four rounds to two
27:48in favor of Emiliano Vargas.
27:50Are you suggesting our producer, Bob Torrance,
27:53sabotaged your scorecard on purpose?
27:54I think he's trying to mess with me.
27:55You know, the scorecard is sacred territory for me, Todd.
27:59All right.
27:59I disagree.
28:00Suéltalo, suéltalo, Agustin.
28:02Well, that sixth round was certainly competitive,
28:04but Mannix gave it to Vargas.
28:10And you can see Vargas,
28:11he wants to use his head
28:12to keep separation and land body shots.
28:15And that old-school Mexican tactic there
28:17Emiliano Vargas is trying to do
28:19and spread it to Raul Cahiz Jr.
28:21for letting him do that because,
28:23you know,
28:24in order to get separation,
28:25there's many ways to do that,
28:26and that's one of them.
28:39All right,
28:39keep on boxing.
28:41Keep on boxing.
28:43Keep taking him back the way you're doing it.
28:45All right?
28:45The way you're doing it,
28:46you're doing good.
28:47Keep on touching and going to the body like that.
28:50Just watch his overhead.
28:54The only thing he has is that overhand right, be careful, that's it.
28:59Touch, touch, touch, and go downstairs, go to the body.
29:03Look, you're messing him up when you start going downstairs.
29:118-9-10.
29:128-9-10, you win the fight.
29:15Touch, touch, touch.
29:19When you go softball, you're having success or you go softball.
29:25Seconds out, mouthpiece in, seconds out.
29:28Go back to the corner with your mouthpiece in.
29:31Emiliano Vargas made headlines during the Super Bowl as he joined Xander Zayas
29:36and was featured during Bad Bunny's Super Bowl halftime show.
29:39He said, yeah, guys, it was great for me, good exposure, but trust me,
29:42the entire time, Sugar Quintana was in the back of my mind.
29:49He's certainly getting a test right now from a guy that's not only durable
29:52but has a lot of firepower coming back, and he's got to be careful in these exchanges.
29:58Sergio, with his famous father in the corner, I just keep wondering
30:00if he's going to slip into that mentality where he bites down on his mouthpiece
30:04and goes punch for punch with this guy.
30:06You know, I don't think that's in his temperament.
30:08I think that's what separates this kid.
30:10He's very smart. He has a high-five IQ, and he has really good upper-body defense,
30:15so he doesn't get hit with clean shots.
30:17A headbutt has caused another cut on Quintana.
30:20I believe that's his third. Both eyes are bloody.
30:24Yeah, those are my punches, I think, because now Vargas is landing some clean, short punches.
30:29He's not loading up on these shots, and now he's breaking down, I think, Quintana.
30:33The body shot advantage is just huge in favor of Vargas.
30:3882 to 26 through seven rounds.
30:46Well, you've talked about Vargas just needing to go back downstairs to the body relentlessly, Sergio.
30:51What does Quintana have to do to pull off the upset here?
30:53Continue catching and countering.
30:55Right here he's letting Vargas be too offensive.
30:57He was doing really good work catching and countering.
30:59Rolling with shots, coming with that right hand.
31:02Robby, Robby, Robby, Robby.
31:04He's talking trash to Vargas, who walks right into the line of fire.
31:09I don't know, Sergio. He's got that mean streak right now, it looks like.
31:13Both these fighters have a mean streak.
31:18Vargas stalking Quintana around the ring.
31:21Throws an uppercut on the inside.
31:24As Quintana continues to blow blood out of his nose.
31:27Yeah, he's been doing that since the second round.
31:29And this is another gear that I want to see from Emiliano Vargas.
31:33He's not loading up, he's shortening his shots, he's keeping the pressure on him,
31:36not letting Quintana breathe, and that body pressure, that physical pressure
31:40is starting to turn on Agustin Quintana.
31:42Oh, big left in the corner.
31:44Vargas letting his hands fly.
31:46Quintana getting the worst of it, but he lands the right.
31:50The Argentinian Bull waving Vargas back in.
31:53And Vargas, ear-to-ear smile, loving the offense.
31:56He says, bring it on.
31:57Nice left from Vargas.
32:01Look, see how he's using the head?
32:03Vargas, that's a legal move as long as you're not trying to head play.
32:07You're just trying to create space by doing that.
32:10And now a big mouse underneath the right eye of Quintana.
32:12Who's face is becoming a bloody mess.
32:16Just an overall smart fight on the outside and on the inside of Emiliano Vargas.
32:2410 segundos.
32:28The tightest change in this fight.
32:30Yeah, big round here for El Jinaral.
32:34Yeah, big round here for El Jinaral.
32:42Yeah, big round here for El Jinaral.
32:59Calm down, calm down.
33:03I need you to be here.
33:05I need you to be careful.
33:06I need everything from you in this round.
33:16I need you to counter punch.
33:17But you can't take your counter punchers anymore.
33:21Come on, son, let's go.
33:25And a big round for Vargas, Sergio, who is really landing more head shots this round and busting open those
33:31cuts.
33:32There you go with another 2-1 shot.
33:34But look, the fact that he's not pulling back his punches, he is shortening up his offense.
33:38And that's what's actually tricking Quintana and getting hit with those shots.
33:42We're gonna take a look at the cuts.
33:45Got Vaseline all over him.
33:47No, he's just fine.
33:48Let this man go.
33:49I'm looking more at his condition.
33:52And you can hear this crowd reacting to the doctor hitting the apron.
33:56They do not want to see this fight stop.
33:59Emiliano Vargas may be up on the scorecards, but Agustin Quintana is very much in this fight.
34:04Okay.
34:05Okay.
34:06Okay.
34:10If you continue getting hurt, it's what Raul Caiz Jr. said, I'm gonna stop this fight.
34:17And Quintana more than eager to get back in the fray here with Vargas.
34:21He still likes his chances.
34:23And I don't think Quintana is hurt at this point.
34:26I think he's busted up, but I don't think he's hurt.
34:28I agree with you, Chris.
34:30I think he deserves this chance because he's in this fight.
34:37Okay, now Vargas is using his head.
34:42Using your head on the chest of a fighter is different than actually doing it upstairs and clashing heads.
34:48Watch your head.
34:52Just missing with the right was Quintana, who's throwing punches with a lot of menace behind him.
34:57Yeah, a lot of menace, and there's no way this fight should be stopped.
34:59I mean, Quintana's face is telling a different story because he's in this fight offensively.
35:04He's throwing the right shots as well.
35:06Well, the judges look at that face, and wonder if some of the closer rounds they might edge out to
35:10Vargas just because of the damage.
35:11Yeah, maybe that's a face only the judges could love.
35:16Vargas, meanwhile, looks like he just got out of the shower.
35:18Not a scratch on it.
35:19Look at Chris Mannix's scorecard through eight.
35:21Yeah, I've got 78-74 in favor of Emiliano Vargas.
35:25Some very competitive rounds in the middle part of this fight, but I thought the last two were controlled by
35:30Emiliano.
35:31I think this round is being controlled by Emiliano.
35:33He is stepping on the gas and pressing Quintana, and it's working for him.
35:38What a great learning experience fight for Emiliano Vargas.
35:42Absolutely, and he needed it.
35:44He needed it.
35:45This is going to leap him into the championship level.
35:49This fight right here, whether there was no title on the line, this is what he needed in order to
35:53become champion.
35:54I think this probably shows, and look, there's still a round and a half left of this fight,
35:58it probably shows he's a ways away from that championship level.
36:01I know he's ranked in the top ten by a couple of the sanctioning bodies,
36:04but I don't see top rank rushing him into any kind of world title shot in the next year or
36:09so.
36:10Mannix, I'm going to have to disagree with you here.
36:11I think he's not too far from a championship, from a championship.
36:15I just think Quintana is one of these cagey, unknown, unheralded fighters
36:19that knows how to fight and knows how to make these fights close.
36:22I'm just putting my reporter cap on here, saying the top rank is not going to put a new title
36:27flag the next year.
36:28Well, listen, they got some of the best matchmakers in the world, so I'll have to agree with you on
36:33that level.
36:35Right now, Quintana trying to get out of that corner, Vargas all over him.
36:40And this, he can actually get the stoppage, Vargas.
36:43You know, there's a little, there's a little give finally in Quintana,
36:46and I don't know if it's fatigue for finally Vargas breaking down the tough Argentinian.
36:51Yeah, I mean, look at the eyes are swelling shut, blood pouring down into his eyes.
36:57It's not an easy trip home right now for Quintana.
36:59This is the first round that I've seen give, and I've seen Quintana.
37:16Look at that face.
37:30Look, I'm gonna stop this fight. No, don't stop it.
37:40Look, you gotta watch out with the head. Watch out with those headbutts. Watch out with his head.
37:45Look, I wanna go to the, I wanna go, I wanna go to the last round.
37:49And they've stopped it. Raul Callez Jr., despite Quintana's very animated protest, has waved it off.
37:58And Emiliano Vargas gets the knockout win.
38:02I gotta say, I disagree with that stoppage. The face, as Sergio said, of Quintana tells one story, but this
38:11fight was playing out a different way.
38:13No, Quintana was not winning these last few rounds, but he was very much in the fight, and he's got
38:19that power.
38:19That right hand has shown he could connect on Emiliano Vargas.
38:23And look, Sergio, you know this better than I do, for sure. You don't wanna knockout loss on your resume.
38:29Going the distance, even in defeat, means more than getting stopped at a moment like this.
38:34I'm a big fan of Raul Callez Jr., but that was not a good stoppage.
38:37Give that man the courtesy of going the distance.
38:41He had three minutes left. He went through the worst of it already.
38:44He deserved to go out on his shield, and that's the way he wanted to go out.
38:47Well, let's focus back on the positive for Emiliano Vargas, who gets the win here.
38:51Sergio, it certainly wasn't his most dominating victory, but all things considered, this might be his best victory.
38:58It wasn't the most dominating top, but it was an education that he needed.
39:01He needed those rounds, and he got those rounds.
39:04I think this put him in a position to become a top prospect, and now we know what he has
39:10against a cagey fighter,
39:11what he can do, and if he has a bag of tricks, and we just found that out.
39:17This has only been the second time Vargas has gone past round number six, and he closed strong, didn't he,
39:23Sergio?
39:23Well, he finally found a way in. He was shorting up those shots, and he was breaking down.
39:28It took him a while, but he finally was able to break down Quintana.
39:34But Quintana, you've seen how mad he was. You've seen how frustrated he was in that corner.
39:38He said it out loud when they asked him, do you want to stop this fight?
39:42He clearly said no. Do not stop this fight, and you see how angry he was.
39:46The body language pushing his own coach away in disgust, and I have to agree with him.
39:52I mean, let that man fight to the end.
39:56Well, brave performance either way from Sugar Quintana, who did better than I think just about anybody outside of his
40:02circle thought he would do.
40:05So Emiliano Vargas now 17-0 with 14 knockouts, and I say it again, Sergio, he's only 21 years old.
40:12You think he's close to a world title shot, but should he even get one this early in his career
40:17right now?
40:18Look, look, stylistically in what I'm seeing, he's close to a world title shot.
40:22But like I just told Mannix, the matchmakers and the people that are in charge with his career,
40:27including his father, who openly has said that Fernando Vargas Sr. was pushed too fast.
40:33He doesn't want the same thing happening to his son.
40:36So I think that's the best way to go is take your time, continue stringing up these knockouts,
40:42keep filling out crowds, keep getting these knockouts,
40:45and build that Vargas last name and turn yourself into a star.
40:55Well, ladies and gentlemen, coming up on DAZN after the Ring 6 postponement,
40:59Carlos Adames finally defends his WBC middleweight title against Ammo Williams.
41:04March 21st in Orlando, Florida.
41:07The rescheduled showdown promises fireworks as both men look to finish what they started.
41:12You can see it live right here on DAZN.
41:19David Diolonte makes it official.
41:25Ladies and gentlemen, referee Raul Caiz Jr. called the hope to discuss the official time of the stoppage.
41:34Three minutes of round number nine, declaring your winner by TKO.
41:40He's still undefeated and still the WBO Latino and NABF Jr. Super lightweight champion,
41:49the general Emiliano Fernando Vargas.
42:02What an ovation for Emiliano Vargas.
42:05He's got the star power already, Sergio.
42:07He has star written all over him.
42:09And like his father used to say after victories, you know, top of the food chain.
42:13And whenever you have those type of skills, I mean, they're just alpha.
42:17These guys know how to fight.
