00:00anachronistic version of charlie xcx's 360 crazy like having young kids dance to a coaching song
00:06nuts all right so i've been a fairly big fan of bridgerton for a couple of years now i notoriously
00:12really loved season one season two and queen charlotte and then really didn't connect with
00:17season three at all i thought season four part one was a really good return to form for the show
00:22we now have season four part two this is the wrap-up of the season focusing on benedict
00:28and sophie and i think it's good i don't think it's amazing though and i don't think it's quite as
00:33good
00:34as season four part one it's really interesting that netflix chooses to break up the delivery of
00:38these seasons because i do wonder how season four as a whole piece would land but judging this chunk
00:45of the season i would say it is notably weaker than season four part one now in saying this
00:50there are some exceptional things in this chunk of the season there's some really good moments
00:55between benedict i think the actresses playing francesca and violet for example are really given
01:00a lot to work with and really give excellent performances but at the same time there's some
01:05characterizations that i'm really left wanting more from most notably john francesca's husband i think is
01:11sorely underwritten and there are big emotional swings tied to his character tied to francesca
01:16that are sort of that thing where it's like i'm feeling this because the performances are great
01:20i'm feeling this because the music is well done but i really wish i connected with this more on
01:24a character level i found this season also the pacing was at times really excellent whenever it
01:30was benedict and sophie i thought this show really was stepping into its own i thought it carved out a
01:35really unique romantic and sensual and longing sort of identity for itself i think each season has
01:41touched on desire and sensuality and longing in a different way and i think season four really had
01:47this unique perspective through the character of sophie and through the class conscious storytelling
01:52that was going on but whenever it wasn't about sophie and benedict however i found this show was a bit
01:56of a mixed bag you have some returning characters from previous seasons most notably anthony and kate and
02:02i found there was almost a level of character assassination that was applied to anthony in this scene i could
02:08sort of picture anthony saying some of the stuff he was saying but the way he was saying it i
02:12was like this is
02:13baffling we really needed more time with anthony to understand fully why he was there i can sort of
02:18buy it but i'm doing some heavy lifting in my own brain but i don't want to sound too negative
02:22overall
02:23i would recommend this to bridgerton fans this isn't the total abomination that season three was this is
02:28a decent season of bridgerton but if i'm being completely transparent with my own thoughts i was
02:33sitting there at a certain point being like damn i missed the intensity and the level of investment i had
02:38towards the back end of season one season two and queen charlotte and on one end we're dealing with
02:43benedict who's a lot more sensitive and a lot more emotionally mature at times so we are going to have
02:48a less chaotic love story he's a more refined sweet sensitive soul you know so we aren't going to have
02:54this toxic display that we had towards the end of season one with that whole betrayal of consent subplot
02:59and similarly in season two there was enemies to lovers so there was this burning hatred and anger mixed
03:05with love and desire queen charlotte was an incredibly intense and emotionally powerful
03:09season and season three was a total dud but i found in this one i was kind of wishing i
03:13was just a little
03:14more gripped by certain things while i appreciate that this is a more tender and more earnest story i
03:19was wondering if they could have brought some tension in somehow and i'm not really sure they fully
03:24delivered on that the main source of tension here is that benedict is a member of the upper class the
03:28upper society part of the bridgerton universe whereas sophie is lower class she's working as a maid so they
03:34can't be together while i felt this tension at times i definitely empathize for sophie i found
03:39the story didn't quite build on this the way i wanted to and ultimately i was just kind of sitting
03:43there tapping my foot at times being like okay we know how this is going to wrap up let's do
03:47to it
03:47especially the main conflict between sophie and lady penwood actually felt wrapped up a little too
03:52cleanly and a little too neatly and i think there could have been some richer emotions brought out of
03:56these characters but again i want to stress it's not all bad there's some incredibly well done set
04:01design in this show and there is a moment towards the back end of the season there is an extended
04:06chunk that is dealing with characters in pain dealing with characters in pain who are suffering
04:11a great emotional loss and the show actually drops its usual plastic overly poppy vibrant veneer for
04:19something a lot more dark a lot more tragic and almost something that felt a bit gothic i was being
04:24reminded of moments from the recent wuthering heights adaptation or nosferatu in a really good way i thought
04:30the production design and set design this season was a massive step up i think this chunk of the
04:35season made more room for side characters and unfortunately not all the side characters are as
04:40interesting and i will say i think this new batch of bridgerton siblings we are following on
04:45most notably francesca hyacinth the younger boy alouise i feel like they are kind of merging into one
04:51gloop of bridgerton siblings at times i find their identities aren't as individual and unique and carved out
04:57as maybe anthony benedict and colin were in the initial seasons and i know they will get their own
05:03seasons eventually but right now that's just how i'm feeling i'm sort of seeing that being like i
05:06wish i had a better grip on some of these characters if we're going to start spending more time with
05:10them but again it's not all bad i thought violet was breathtaking i thought both the combination of
05:15the writing around violet a mature age woman trying to have her second go at love and the guilt she's
05:21experiencing and the pain she's experiencing while trying to raise her kids i thought all of that was
05:26excellent and i thought her and marcus was a genuinely well-earned authentic beautiful love
05:31story to watch unfold and even the way it plays into her relationship with lady danbury i thought was
05:36particularly satisfying and heartwarming again i think francesca delivers a fantastic performance
05:42this season asks a lot of her and i think she absolutely delivers despite her character being
05:47underwritten and more importantly i think john being laughably underwritten i will say some of my
05:53favorite stuff in this chunk of the season is around benedict and the thematic weight of watching
05:57benedict who is a sensitive emotionally in tune man yes he had a massive blunder at the end of season
06:03four part one asking sophie to be her mistress but i feel like i'm not alone when a lot of
06:07people were
06:08being like i mean i might have said yes to that and i think what the writing did so well
06:12in season
06:12four part one and even here explored in season four part two is they don't characterize benedict as an
06:18aloof asshole out of her own way they don't perform a character assassination to benedict in order
06:23for that moment to have happened in the previous chunk of episodes right benedict isn't just some
06:28obtuse idiot he is conditioned by the men around him to think this was an appropriate thing to ask
06:33and given the rules of society we actually do understand that i noticed a lot of people in my
06:37comments section were highlighting the fact that they understood how benedict sort of pinballed to
06:42this reasoning to this internal logic and almost why he may have thought sophie would have been down
06:47for that you know she's better off than her current position but it's not ideal right and i think
06:51what season four part two nails and almost quietly really well done is watching benedict as sensitive
06:56soul try and get advice from other men around him and consistently they are delivering clunky ill
07:02advised aggressive almost too masculine advice if that makes any sense i hate to dip into gender roles
07:09but i think there really was something in there about benedict trying to find the right answers asking
07:13mostly men there's a line that benedict says where he says society's rules make little men of all of
07:18us i thought it was a really good line and summed up his struggle watching him bounce from colin to
07:23anthony to modric and watching as each one of them gives kind of solid advice but also occasionally
07:28toxic advice and they're just not approaching it with the sensitivity and the nuance that benedict
07:33needs i think we are able to piece together that in this moment benedict probably wished he had a
07:37father he could talk to i think there's a great sense of isolation that they give to benedict's
07:41character and a bisexual character and i i think there is something in there with benedict and his
07:45sensitivity like not feeling quite in place with these macho groups around him i thought it was
07:50really well done and you're watching someone try and find proper perspective and you watch as benedict
07:54tries to squish the love he has for sophie down until it starts corroding him you seriously start to
08:00watch benedict become emotionally distressed emotionally disturbed it's really well done and my favorite
08:06stuff in this season i think sophie was really beefed up in season four part one i think she takes
08:11a slight backstep at times and it's not in terms of quality just she has less priority but i think
08:16the storytelling they do with benedict and watching him beef with violet and support his
08:21other family members was all just really well done i will say i love pretty much every single
08:25scene we have with the penwood family the lady penwood and her two daughters posy and i think
08:30rosamund but i think posy is a massive shining star i know it's usually bridgerton tradition to
08:36introduce the new family of the love interest and then we don't see any of the siblings moving
08:40forward most notably edwina from season two but i would really love to see some of these characters
08:45return i think they're so textured and so well characterized and even though i'm left wanting more
08:50from lady penwood and the conflict there i think it does wrap up a little neatly i do really love
08:55every scene we get with lady penwood and with her daughters i think they're all really well
08:59performed and really well written and i do just have to ask you guys i don't actually hate
09:04the idea of breaking up a season into two batches one is someone who covers a bunch of media
09:08it makes it a little more digestible i can watch this in an afternoon and then do a video on
09:13it it's
09:13not a weekend long investment i'm given more time to kind of like figure my thoughts out and i don't
09:18hate the idea of savoring little morsels i particularly prefer a week-to-week watch because
09:23it allows me to really take in each episode but i will say i'm not sure breaking up the seasons
09:28of
09:29bridgerton really serve the story that much i think seasons of bridgerton really kind of really kind of
09:34rely on that midpoint romantic turn and then the momentum afterwards and i felt like picking up
09:39season four part two they've clearly had to design it in a way where it functions as two separate
09:44pieces because they know that's how most people are going to watch it but also when people watch
09:48it in a year from now they're going to watch it as one piece so they need to keep that
09:51in mind as
09:52well and as a result there is this weird feeling where it feels like it's simultaneously trying to ride
09:57some momentum of season four part one but also it's kind of clumsily trying to blow the cobwebs off
10:02and recalibrate itself it's it's a weird thing where it feels like time has passed but also no
10:07time has passed it's just an odd feeling and i found initially the momentum of this season felt
10:12slightly weird given the ending of season four part one there was such a great cliffhanger and then when
10:17we start in season four part two it feels like the characters have kind of changed and shifted around
10:21a bit and take me it took me a second to get my bearings and as a result i found
10:25this was getting in
10:26the way of the steamy sexual tension i feel like i should have been feeling between sophie and
10:30benedict at the time and again i don't want to sit here and say that breaking up seasons is an
10:35inherently bad thing to do there's actually been moments where i really appreciated that approach
10:39most notably the final season of the crown i actually liked being broken into two parts because
10:44there was a really distinct difference in those parts part one i think was focused on diana or part two
10:49was focused on diana i forget but there were two individual parts that then came together as a whole
10:54but they felt like two different mini series of the same elk whereas i think in bridgerton season
10:59four i think it did actually hurt the narrative and i was sitting there season four part two notably
11:04feels quite different now we're focusing way more on different side characters so i can confidently say
11:09i prefer season four part one in season four part two we're giving a lot of time to whistle down
11:15again and i'm just like we gave so much time to that in season three and it's not compelling
11:20it feels hypocritical it's clunky storytelling it's strange i am never on the show's wavelength
11:26because the show continuously keeps changing how it views penelope and her relationship to whistle
11:31down and and not in a way that feels interesting or compelling or smart in a way that feels low
11:36-key
11:36emotionally manipulative that the show will randomly just decide hey whistle down is a really
11:41virtuous and noble greater good sort of thing that you should be respecting penelope for doing you know
11:45she's showing that she can have a career in a society that's normally reductive towards women
11:49and the show kind of wants you to not question the lives it's ruining and then randomly this season
11:54we're meant to be shocked when we find out that penelope is actually hurting other people's lives and
11:59is revealing their secrets and there is a negative effect from the gossip column so then we're like
12:03okay well i'm back to how i originally felt about this which was i wasn't a big fan of it
12:07and i
12:07didn't support penelope in this like what are we doing you know it's just flip-flop flip-flop
12:13it's not consistent and it's not all over the place and you could make the argument that this
12:17is the point penelope is in a fractured state of mind and she doesn't know how to feel about all
12:21this stuff but we need more time with penelope in order to really feel this properly so it doesn't
12:26just feel like clunky tired old writing like i'm really over the whistle down stuff i think it's
12:31really tired and it'll position us to feel a certain way about it and then it's like actually
12:35penelope's changed her mind so should you and i'm like fuck off like i'm not doing that i will say
12:40and
12:40i know a lot of you are probably really surprised to hear this i actually like the mondrages in this
12:45part of the season all right in season three they sucked they've kind of been hanging around and the
12:49show clearly has no clue what to do with them and i think they just kind of feel bad because
12:53they set
12:54up these characters and they're like shit we have no idea what to do with them now in saying that
12:58there is a really interesting story that could be told with the mondrages going from regular people
13:02kind of climbing the ranks of society but i think they start to finally move the needle in regard
13:07to will and alice mondra alice is gearing up to replace lady danbury and i found that story it
13:13was the first time i've been watching the mondrages and i haven't been having that feeling of
13:16why am i watching the mondrages i was actually like okay we're moving here in saying that though
13:21when it's will in isolation i just don't have a real tangible feel for his character when he says
13:26things about how benedict should feel about his love interests and how he should act on them
13:30i'm sort of seeing that being like bro who invited you here i don't know anything about you
13:34as to why you would be landing on these thoughts or on these feelings or on these opinions all right
13:39so now i'm going to talk about francesca michaela and john so if you haven't seen this season leave
13:44now we're about to get into some pretty thick spoilers but before we get into spoilers if you're
13:48enjoying my videos please consider gaining a membership to this channel for the cost of a
13:52couple of dollars a month you get access to a weekly podcast where i talk about pop culture topics
13:56movie news i talk about every single sean movie i've watched in a given week i talk about new
14:01releases old releases anything i haven't had time to cover on the channel it's waiting there for you
14:06in a weekly podcast thank you so much for considering and back to the video so with francesca
14:10with john and with michaela they're obviously setting up this love triangle now i need to talk
14:16about sort of our relationship with external media to the show i know the whole fan base knew that
14:22the death of john was coming all right so you could barely avoid it as someone who made videos
14:27on bridgerton everyone was like well marshall that's actually foreshadowing you should have been
14:31asking what the point was that because if you'd read the books you would know and it's like yes but
14:34as someone who's just watching the show the show needs to build up this tension properly the show
14:39needs to develop these characters properly so it feels earned within the show not just like a
14:44i knew that was coming because of the books well done show like no it needs to feel earned within
14:49its
14:49respective medium the reason i bring this up is if you were watching this show and you weren't on the
14:54internet if you were watching this show and you didn't know that the death of john was happening
14:59you would literally be absolutely baffled and it doesn't it's not even written in a way where it's
15:04like well that's kind of how life is it's the cruelty and the randomness of life it's not well built
15:09up at
15:09all he just kind of goes damn babe i have a bit of a headache done that's it john is
15:15out of the picture
15:16he's out of the show and then you were subjected to frankly these really wonderful scenes where
15:21everyone's mourning him but i'm like i never saw you guys interact ever like there's these moments
15:27where characters are mourning him and they're like the great thing about john is he didn't say much
15:31but he said so much i'm like okay it's like okay let's not try retcon the lack of development you
15:35gave
15:36john before snuffing the life out of him and getting him out of the show and again everyone's going to
15:40be
15:40in my comments me like well marshall they're doing that because the true love story for francesca
15:45is the fact that she's in love with his cousin michaela and so we need to get that out of
15:51the
15:51way and i'm saying i don't think it's particularly respectful to characters to treat them as little
15:55toys that you just discard because you've got something more interesting to do dare i say if
16:00you spent more time with francesca and john let this like death of john kind of like you know
16:06build for a season or two i'm not saying he needed to be sick but just really get us to
16:10like john
16:10foreshadow it well you know give them one last moment or just something like give them something
16:15and if you weren't going to give them something really do a good job of highlighting the randomness
16:20of death and how tragic that is really make us feel it but it moves so quickly you know we
16:24don't get
16:24to sit with her being like he was well you know like it really just moves way too quickly for
16:30me and
16:30the reason i say that is because i think you could have had an incredible two-hander with francesca and
16:36john and then with francesca and michaela if you really got us to care about john instead of saying
16:41they've been like okay like we know his time is limited come on let's get this out of the way
16:45if
16:45you really made us care and believe that like there was a love there even if it's just a friendly
16:50love
16:50because francesca deep down knows that she's actually leaning more towards women than men whatever
16:55right like just really make us feel the care they have for one another really get us inside into
17:01francesca going like i really want to love him the way i should love him but i just don't quite
17:06i just i just don't you know and have us you know have us explore the guilt and the tension
17:10while
17:11she's feeling something simmering between michaela but i actually think they just like snuffed out some
17:16really interesting story potential way too early in my opinion i really want to be crying when i'm
17:21looking at the painting of francesca and john being covered while they're mourning but i was kind of
17:27just sitting there being like damn like i wish i connected more with them i wish i had some moments
17:31some scenes with them that really made me connect watch how he interacted with the rest of the
17:36bridgerton family because the scene where all the members of the bridgertons are like going off about
17:40how good john is and how he's such a good dancer and how he really holds it down and how
17:44he was a
17:45pleasure to do business with from benedict i'm like i'm not buying any of this you're just doing
17:48heavy lifting why weren't you doing the heavy lifting with this writing earlier so this hit like a ton of
17:53bricks again i didn't need him to be sick in bed for episode after episode you can still give me
17:58the randomness and the cruelty of the universe but have it be right after a moment where francesca
18:03and him seemingly almost really connect and we're really sitting there with them it's quiet it's
18:08beautiful can you imagine if instead we're sitting there and they finally maybe they almost reach the
18:13pinnacle okay i get we're saving the pinnacle for when she has her lesbian experience her you know her
18:18moment of awakening with michaela i'm sure that's the arc but you really could have had something
18:22interesting where they do their best or they have a really sweet heartwarming moment where they
18:26communicate well and the pressure's taken off maybe she says i'm so sorry i can't give you a
18:30child whatever whatever whatever right you know they go to sleep happy together for the first time
18:34in a while then he wakes up and he's he's gone can you imagine how much better that would have
18:38landed
18:39like i don't know man it just felt like it just felt like writers playing with toys rather than writers
18:44taking care of their characters and i'm not saying that the show is bad not at all i think the
18:48show
18:48actually has some really good stuff in this chunk of the season my main disappointment is i'm just
18:52sitting there watching this incredible story on paper kind of be squandered a little you know i think
18:57it's such a shame there's so much story potential there and you could have really explored the guilt
19:01and the interesting feelings around michaela in saying this though the actual grieving part is so
19:07well done like francesca whoever's playing francesca is absolutely wonderful in these scenes and
19:12you're you're learning more about her she's talking about how she typically is quiet because of the
19:16other siblings you're seeing the tension between her and michaela initially she's kind of coming
19:21at michaela for wanting to party and celebrate his life and then they come together it's actually
19:25something she needs all of this stuff is really well done she has this incredible scene with violet
19:30two fantastic performances where she's breaking down about not being able to give john a child and
19:35i do think that was a really nice payoff to the scene in season four part one where he's talking
19:40about you know eventually we'll figure out the child thing i thought all of that was so well done
19:44but i don't know again maybe if we had been given the entire season in one chunk or been
19:49watch it week to week this would have felt more gradual maybe there's stuff i've forgotten but
19:52i just really didn't feel this the way i needed to and yes all right it's it's kind of like
19:57if you
19:58write the death of a dog into a show but give us no time with the dog inherently that's mortifyingly
20:03sad and you're always going to move the emotional needle a little but ideally a moment of good writing
20:08is actually feeling like i've lost someone in my own life a bit being like oh no i'm going to
20:12miss
20:12their presence on the show i'm sad they're gone i'm sad with these characters and with john i'm going to
20:17be
20:17honest i'm just like all right well on to michaela like and i don't want to be feeling that i
20:22don't
20:22want to be feeling about but that's how i was feeling next we have penelope and colin i don't
20:27like these people i i don't think they're well performed i don't think they're well written i
20:30okay i will say i think the actress that plays penelope is quite good but i think the writing for
20:35her is so inconsistent and clunky and strange and i don't know what to do with her colin's a joke
20:41why is he in this show like they like they don't even try they don't even pretend to care about
20:45colin it's just baffling to me now antony and kate show up in a lovely surprise i will say i
20:50was so
20:50happy to see them for about five minutes what was antony on this season like i understand that
20:55in season two he was a little arrogant but i thought the whole point of season two was that
20:59he kind of chilled out a bit the antony we've known since he got with kate has grown up and
21:05matured and chilled out and i don't hate what he was saying in the scene with benedict when benedict
21:10goes to his older brother for advice i think you can still get to that point where benedict is let
21:14down by the advice his brother gives him but the way it was delivered was fucking crazy and didn't
21:19make any sense for antony to have been speaking to benedict this way like as if antony can talk
21:24when antony was sneaking around in season two banging kate while he was actually in a relationship
21:29with edwina and like you know making her an unpure woman in society or whatever like and he's sitting
21:35there telling benedict like you know i should write you out of the family for doing this i'll kick
21:39you out if you do this i'm like what the hell again i can understand if he had the vibe
21:43of the
21:43conversation that benedict had with violet where it's like it's really a shame that this is how
21:47society works but i don't think this is the best move for your social standing you really need to
21:52consider this if then sophie overheard that and didn't hear the nice part at the end where antony
21:56said but you know love is love maybe similar to a wuthering heights setup where heathcliff overhears
22:01part of it but not all of it but instead like they just completely assassinate antony's character
22:06and then later on they're sitting there being like oh it's a shame that not all our kids could be
22:11at
22:11the funeral i'm like yeah why isn't he he was just here we didn't even see him go like what's
22:15what's going on i truthfully thought that scene was utterly baffling all right i do understand that
22:21antony has his own interest has his own goals he's concerned about the family but i can't really buy
22:26that given his previous actions in season two and who we grew into if we'd spent more time with
22:30antony and learned that he's actually really stressed about his family name and there's all this
22:34other stuff going on and like really get into a moral sinking for antony then fine i could buy it
22:40but as it stands they did not earn this moment at all and it just felt like again it felt
22:45like
22:45the writers kind of just playing with these characters as toys which is a shame because
22:49when you look at the nuanced care they're taking with benedict and sophie's beautiful love story and
22:54like even moments like when benedict writes down like our cottage instead of my cottage like
22:59beautiful moments like that and i thought all the tension i love the bath scene by the way like
23:03totally really well done steamy sensual scene like there's so much good stuff in this season but
23:08the side characters were really not working for me and as a result i was really longing and wishing
23:13for and missing the really tight laser focus that these early seasons had when they rain in on
23:18certain characters i will say i thought this show looked absolutely stunning throughout there wasn't
23:23even much noticeable green screen or wonky stuff like there was in season four part one or earlier
23:28seasons i thought it looked absolutely stellar and the sets around the queen continued to be
23:33absolutely breathtaking and stunning cressida's back i'm sorry like just did not service the
23:38plot at all i know there was some slight plot machinations that were there to do with the fact
23:42that she's with a penwood but like frankly just didn't work for me at all i will say i think
23:46the
23:46season reckons with class struggles and societal issues really well i think there's some fun playful
23:52humor in the fact that benedict can't recognize sophie at a certain point and this necklace is an absolute
23:57revelation to him but at the same time i think if you go with it emotionally it does serve as
24:02a
24:02really well told kind of subversion of the cinderella story it's like he can't see that this is her
24:08because you can't even fathom that a woman of lower class would be the woman he's connected with
24:12it's actually really well done nuanced right i think it's really really good anyways now i'm just
24:16going to go through each of the episodes quickly just find notable things that i haven't touched on
24:20that i think are worth talking about i do love sophie's friends i love the moment where sophie sums up
24:24her
24:24love story with benedict to the friend in episode one up until this point it sounds absurd
24:28and he starts laughing i find the world of sophie is really textured and lived in we could almost have
24:33a spin-off show about sophie and her relationship with the penwoods and her relationship with her
24:38friends there's such a level of depth to the writing it's a very lived-in character and a lived-in
24:43set of
24:44friends and family it's really really well done and i also really love the extended conversations
24:49they have about her becoming benedict's mistress you know someone says nearly every high society
24:53gentleman has a mistress sophie this moment where mondrick talks to benedict and says you know no
24:59person wants to truly be hidden how can she trust that you're going to be able to you know navigate
25:04the ups and downs of like keeping her hidden and an affair if you can't even understand her emotions
25:08that sounds like really emotionally intelligent like dialogue but it also isn't fully applicable
25:13to the situation mondrick seems to have the impression that like it's just the way benedict worded it
25:18whereas i don't think that's the case i don't think there is any world where sophie would have enjoyed
25:22that but in saying that mondridge does hit the nail on the head in terms of benedict being
25:26a little less clumsy emotionally and i will say the differences between benedict you see that he's
25:31earnestly making mistakes he said it wouldn't have been dishonest and then mondridge says it's not about
25:36honesty it's about the gesture and again even though i think the show is communicating that mondridge has
25:41the right impression here not fully you know not fully i think benedict did the right thing being
25:45honest it's just how he said it and yes he needs to be able similar to what mondridge is saying
25:50be able
25:50to navigate her emotions better than he did but at the same time even if he does that there's no
25:56version where sophie's like yeah i'd love to be your mistress that'd be awesome i also really enjoyed
25:59the arc around violet kind of piecing together stephanie's backstory and like biting her tongue
26:04at times and knowing there's more going on but not being able to say it to certain people and she
26:08wants to know i thought all of that was really well done every scene with violet where she's trying to
26:12scope out steph's true story and not for sinister reasons but steph but stephanie obviously has her
26:17guards up she can't risk the downfall of her own personhood you know it's really well done
26:21i really love lady penwood trying to pin the shoe clips on stephanie i love that posy is kind of
26:27like
26:27being like mom chill it's not that big of a deal i love the revelation towards the end of the
26:31season
26:31that it was never really about the clips it's about sophie in general she feels like sophie stole
26:36her man from her you know she feels like sophie stole money from her and the time she could have
26:41had with mr penwood i think all that is actually really well written really nicely paid off towards the end
26:46i really love the shot where benedict and sophie see each other on the street for the first time
26:50since the mid-season break they look at each other while you know horses are going by it's just a
26:55really well done shot it reminds me again of that shot in wuthering heights where heathcliff returns
26:59that yeah really well done moment benedict talks to her and says oh look i got caught up in the
27:03moment
27:03you know he tries to say they didn't word it well she says we actually both got carried away you
27:07can see
27:07benedict is hurt by this characterization of their like little fling they had he's like oh carried away you
27:13didn't want this we have this scene where the woman that i think is the affair partner or being
27:17cheated on i might i was a little fuzzy on this but she shows up and she roast penelope for
27:22immortalizing rumors you know making it the talk of the ton and penelope starts seeing there being like
27:27i need to practice journalistic integrity i'm like this just isn't isn't working for me at all
27:32i do like all the quietness between benedict and sophie this scene where he walks in and sees that
27:37sophie has been snooping but it's just quiet there's some simmering tension i think it's pretty well
27:41done again i think the break in between the seasons kind of hurt the tension slightly but it
27:46was it was building back up here i thought the dialogue from sophie was really well written here
27:50the whole why do you find it suitable to kiss me by the lake and here but not the woman
27:54with the mask
27:55at the ball you know why are you willing to kiss me because you forget in season one they established
27:59that if you do anything before marriage sexually you're like damaged goods right so it's like why do
28:04you think it's appropriate to kiss me and do this stuff outside of marriage when you think i'm like
28:08this lower class girl but you would have but you wouldn't have dared kiss the girl that was in the
28:13mask at the high class society obviously i don't need to spell this out this is both sophie but she's
28:19seen there being like okay we're having an actualization of the differences you see in class
28:24in the two different versions of me i think it's so so well done she says you're okay diminishing my
28:29value by kissing me but not her really good and i was just taken back to when anthony wanted to
28:34shoot
28:34simon in the face for kissing his sister i was like i miss those days that those were such good
28:38days we also see eloise is trying to mend the bridge with hyacinth she brings flowers and is
28:43rejected credit to eloise i feel quite bad for her i'm actually missing eloise i would like eloise to
28:48get a little more to do i think every time she talks it's always interesting you know even in season
28:52four part one where she overstepped i was like this is well written i love eloise and i love that
28:58they've intentionally framed her as a bit of an outsider a bit of a wallflower i think it's really well
29:02done
29:02and not in a bad way i don't think it's weak writing that we're not getting more of her i
29:06think
29:06it actually speaks to her character but i'm really looking forward to if she gets her own season even
29:11if the i don't know what the books do but like even if her season you could really do something
29:17subversive and interesting if you don't follow the books and uh you give eloise either you know she
29:22does fall for a woman but i guess we're about to have that with francesca so maybe what you could
29:26do
29:26is with eloise you could have a season where we do another traditional bridgerton season where
29:32you know she's bouncing from man to man and like everyone's putting pressure on her and maybe you
29:37even build some tension with a certain man and then you end the season with her kind of going
29:41i don't want this like that's it i marry myself done donezo and i think it'd be a really interesting
29:48thing if you really get the audience to actually start rooting for a love story and start you know
29:54forgetting who eloise is the way she's forgetting who she is and what her priorities are she's finally
29:58getting caught up in the hubbub about you know getting married and i feel like if you end the
30:03season with her not getting married that could be really really fascinating anyways i'm just
30:06spitballing here violet says to sophie that she wishes sophie was legitimate because she really likes
30:11her and that you know the nobility was suitable for benedict it's a nice moment it shows that violet
30:16is part of the old guard she does understand all these values she doesn't condone them she doesn't
30:20love it but she knows it's how the world works i think it's a really well-written scene and i
30:24appreciate the show practicing empathy for people that have flawed values and beliefs you know just
30:29because we can sit here with a modern lens judging all of them it's not that easy and i appreciate
30:33the
30:33show walking this fine line there are moments the way the story wraps up for example it does kind of
30:38say like oh sophie's life is going to be easier because she has inheritance because the law recognizes who
30:44she actually is she's a woman of stature in this society she is of high society you know the the
30:50season
30:51doesn't end with her going you know what it's fine i'm a maid it doesn't even matter and then the
30:55world
30:55just like fixes and heals and she starts a revolution the season actually doubles down and
31:01goes you know what it's not ideal but in order for them to have a happy ending this is how
31:05it would
31:05have had to have been and i kind of appreciate the show being that emotionally transparent i think the
31:10show is acknowledging that it's set in a time with archaic values and i appreciate that it didn't do
31:16something that was yes maybe more morally virtuous on paper by having the story be it doesn't matter
31:21if i'm of high society or not it matters that you will accept me and i'm you know she starts
31:26a
31:26revolution you can picture another show doing that but i appreciate the show being like okay that would
31:30actually be unrealistic we're not going to be able to do that i really like the scene where lady
31:33penwood pretty ruthlessly fires her maid at one point and the woman rats on sophie to save her own
31:39skin just a really well done scene we have my favorite like vitamin string quartet drop of the season
31:44which is the anachronistic version of charlie xcx's 360 crazy like having young kids dance to a cocaine
31:51song nuts i love the moment where benedict is asked by sophia you looking for something and he
31:55says no i found it romantic as love it we have a line from penelope where she says it was
32:00my moral
32:00virtue to give fair gossip like give me a fucking break this gossip has always been toxic i don't want
32:05to hear it i love the queen charlotte just rejects it she's like no i'm like i'm with you i
32:09do like we
32:09do get some moments of tension between john mikaela and francesca we see john is getting kind of a
32:15little jealous because you start seeing francesca really open up around mikaela they start really
32:18getting along and you've never seen francesca and john really giggle that way so i thought that was
32:22really well done there's this great moment where violet says to benedict that he shouldn't be seeing
32:26steph and he absolutely roasts her for kind of like doing the same and being like hey like you were
32:30all about a love match and and you pursued dad and now you're gonna judge me like it was a
32:34really
32:34well written scene and you got both perspectives and there was hurt there like a rail ridden conflict
32:39scene steph says to benedict that he's frankly being uncaring by showing her a world that she can't
32:44have and he says that she is all that he cares about anyways then benedict starts munching her box
32:49and the episode ends there is a really lovely moment where sophie says slow at first please there's
32:53like some nice consensual sex going on i think it's really well portrayed i think this is an example
32:58of portraying what healthy communicative sex looks like without it being like really lame like there's
33:04no other way to say it sometimes shows will try and show this but it starts feeling like an after
33:08school special you know characters start talking and practicing enthusiastic consent like they're
33:13off like a weird infomercial it just doesn't quite land in the way realistic people talk whereas i found
33:18the way it was done here was just really well done subtle and good it felt very authentic and natural
33:24is
33:24kind of my point and now we're on to episode two i love when the penwood daughters are sent to
33:29kind of
33:29like interrogate eloise and i think hyacinth and like the mom is kind of trying to get a read on
33:34violet it's so funny it's really well done and i also love that violet is transparent she goes up
33:38to sophie she's clearly team sophie and she says look i'm always with you i don't want you to leave
33:43but you better get moving because lady penwood is after you and then we have the scene where i felt
33:47like it was a total character assassination of anthony he showed up just to like shoot his own character
33:52in the foot i can't believe it so anthony shows up and the real only scene we get with him
33:56is him
33:57saying to benedict like you know i acknowledge that i had a mistress and you know you're making a
34:02mistake like i wouldn't have made this mistake and you're being an idiot and like you know i should
34:06write you out of this family i should i should have you done for this but i won't because i
34:10know
34:10you'll make the right choice this was baffling to me like and again i don't mind what he's saying
34:15here if he's saying essentially what violet is saying which is like this love can't happen without
34:20you ruining your own social standing fine all right that makes sense for anthony to outline to
34:25benedict but him becoming so forceful and mean and lacking empathy i was like this isn't congruent
34:31like have we missed something and if so if we've missed something if anthony has changed as a
34:35person or there's a reason he's acting like this please give us some insight because as it stands
34:40totally unearned cresetta cresetta cresetta i forget the pronunciation i know i got it wrong in a video
34:46and now i always just make a mistake because i second guess myself she shows back up and she says
34:50to penelope you could make or break me with a stroke of your pen i'm like again we get my
34:55favorite line
34:56of the season where benedict offers to live at the cottage full-time with sophie and he says
35:01society's rules make little men of all of us such a good line there's also this moment where benedict
35:06doubles down on his own sexual standing and he's like no i've made out with men like there are things
35:11that i'm doing that aren't traditionally accepted by society and i will not hide that part of myself
35:15i'm like okay cool like you're bringing up some parallels to him and sophie as well it's well done
35:19it's well done bro and i just can't like penelope's change of heart about being whistled down is so
35:24unearned like we really needed more time on this or just more consistent writing around this but
35:29this moment where she looks back in the mirror and sees a younger version of herself like give me
35:32a break we have the moment where sophie sees that benedict called it our cottage on the little
35:36poster i have more notes circling back to the antony and benedict scene he says can you imagine
35:42me raising edmund in those conditions now i will say this is an example of someone who has
35:46drunk the kool-aid you know has been conditioned by a toxic society to think this way and at the
35:51same
35:51time i do actually think there is some credence what antony is saying he's delivering an inconvenient
35:56truth by saying like look you are subjecting your potential kid to a much worse life i could never
36:01have done that to my kid but at the same time i was just shocked at the lack of empathy
36:04and
36:05understanding from antony there was not one part of him that was like but i'm sure you'll make a good
36:08father regardless or if this is really what you want just keep this in mind like no he was like
36:12fully rejected i just i couldn't buy it like him saying i should cut you off just felt crazy to
36:18me
36:18like baffling benedict says he'll take care of sophie even if they aren't having a child there's
36:22this brief moment where she thinks she might be having his child but she ends up not having his
36:26child and then so like john is randomly like oh i have a bit of a headache and then like
36:31you hear a
36:31thud on the no i'm just joking you don't hear a thud upstairs uh francesca is like putting on a
36:35little cardigan-y thing and then she's like john john john end of the episode anyway so we open
36:43episode seven i will say the funeral outfits were absolutely popping off just such good costume design
36:48where was antony i may look maybe i missed it maybe i did close my eyes and i missed the
36:52moment
36:52where he left but i was just like okay he's gone you know violet says the line oh some of
36:56my kids are
36:57sad they aren't here i'm like antony was literally here though where'd he go like just get him to turn
37:01the boat around it can't he can't be gone that long i did really love the scene with the cookies
37:05this almost felt like it was approaching like scenes from the bear where the family connects under the
37:09table if you've seen the bear but we have this really sweet moment where all the siblings start
37:13talking about the ingredients of the cookie to help francesca emotionally cope in that moment and kind of like
37:18focus her emotions back in really beautiful scene and then sophie also helps francesca escape the room
37:24and go upstairs and does her hair we then find out that francesca is actually carrying john's baby
37:29from beyond the great so john did manage to impregnate her before getting a headache in fact
37:34maybe that's what gave him the headache he finally delivered a proper load and then was just like oh
37:38fuck my my energy is gone benedict argues with violet and he says would you have tossed data side
37:44for the cause of proper breeding i thought this was such a good line such a good diabolical line
37:50i loved it violet then just goes up to sophie and says hey is it because of benedict that you're
37:55leaving and then violet starts poking being like there must be something more to you are you are you
37:59sure you're not of upper society are you sure there's nothing going on i feel like there would
38:02be like surely then we have this wonderful scene where this like succession lawyers sort of guy shows up
38:07and he's asking about like okay like we need to set up the will and the inheritance and then francesca
38:12mentions i'm having a baby and then he's like okay we're going to need to have an examination to prove
38:17you are actually pregnant you know essentially implying like oh you know women would buy for money
38:21and then benedict just loses his shit and he's like she said she didn't want it she said she's not
38:26ready she's been through enough they go back and they go back and forth for a while and benedict just
38:30explodes and he does like a we live in a society kind of rant and you know he's sick of
38:34hearing about
38:35society obviously because of what's going on with sophie but comes off like a very good big brother
38:39here and again i like that we are watching benedict fall apart we're watching proper yearning like
38:43look at what unrequired well not unrequired but look at what unfulfilled love is doing to our poor boy
38:49benedict he's tearing apart at the seam francesca and violet have this really great argument where
38:54francesca rejects the idea that her and violet are the same despite losing their husbands she breaks down
38:59and says you know you were able to give your husband while he was alive eight beautiful kids he got
39:02to
39:03see all of them i couldn't do that for john now i have his baby what does it even mean
39:07he wasn't
39:07even alive for it it's really well done and the performances from both of them are wonderful
39:11violet then has an extended conversation with benedict one i would have expected antony to be
39:15able to have because i remember antony being able to emotionally hold down the family at times that's
39:20why i'm so disappointed and it feels like character assassination but violet has a conversation with
39:23benedict where she's talking about like you know you would need to move away permanently like just
39:27think about how this is going to go you're not going to be able to come back in between
39:30you would be shunned by society if you're coming back and forth we would be shunned by society like
39:35it just wouldn't be good you would have to sacrifice your family we now have this sequence
39:38where posy escapes the household she says hi to sophie we then find out sophie's playing to leaving
39:43to america then we have this hilarious scene where benedict is playing piano forte with francesca and
39:48it's just so clear that the actor playing benedict is not at all playing that fucking piano forte like
39:53no they didn't even get close it's so bad lady penwood apologizes to posy for how she's been
39:59treating her but clearly only because she wants to get information and then eventually lady penwood
40:03is able to clarify that posy does have some information because posy says look mom don't
40:08worry about her she's leaving anyway really well written scene and we actually get a lot of
40:11insight into lady penwood and how she sees the situation how she feels like she was on borrowed
40:16time with the husband and she feels like sophie kind of took that from her and you don't the the
40:21show isn't trying to get you to agree with her but the show does a really good job of adding
40:25some
40:25empathy like everyone has their own perspective on things and her perspective is wrong her perspective
40:30is nasty but you can see she truly believes it and is truly upset about it she's not just seen
40:34there
40:34the whole time being like sophie's a fucking loser bitch and i fucking hate her like she's seen there
40:38and genuinely feels like she was gibbed and it's misplaced it's not something you're meant to agree
40:43with but i appreciate the the sticky writing here where you're sort of seeing there being like
40:47ah i don't agree with you and i slightly feel bad for you despite how awful you're being and despite
40:53me
40:53not rooting for you or agreeing with any of your actions like i feel bad that you see the world
40:58this way and feel this way oh yep so here we have the baffling funeral scene so colin says
41:02to john a kinder man i've never known i'm like i i never saw you guys interact what are you
41:08talking
41:09about what like yeah he was kind of nice but like seriously like you've never known anyone kinder like
41:14okay okay benedict's like he did everything with such care i'm like come on like the writers are just
41:20like fuck we we haven't given this character any time to do anything and i was sitting there like
41:24screaming at my tv being like i would have loved to see more of this michaela gets her dance party
41:29and francesca really likes it which is a beautiful moment benedict's dancing around and he realizes in
41:34this moment really good visual story time is like damn i'm not dancing with anyone i wish i was with
41:38sophie and he says to var there's something waiting for me she says cannot wait and he says
41:41it's waited long enough beautiful really well done like really well earned romantic moment
41:46sophie's crying she's getting ready to leave benedict's on his horse now i wish this was shot
41:50as beautifully and again i don't think the wuthering heights movie is perfect but i love
41:54that shot of jacob elordi on the horse and while well it was framed and i love benedict on his
41:58horse
41:59i just wish it was framed a little better a little more excitingly it's a really good moment he's on
42:02a
42:02horse to get to sophie come on let us feel the yearning let us soak in the environment he finds
42:07her
42:07necklace on the floor and he has the biggest like well duh moment ever but again i appreciate the
42:11nuance right in here that like he couldn't even fathom it could be her because he thought they were so
42:15clearly of two different classes i also like that throughout this season we see that violet is
42:20also struggling to make sense of sophie he's she's she's noticing oh she she understands these rules
42:26of high society but also knows this stuff about lower class society quote on quote you know like
42:31she can see kind of the incongruency that benedict was able to say i thought that was a really neat
42:36moment of writing so episode eight sophie is locked up in jail penwood takes her to court to basically
42:41accuse her of stealing and then benedict and violet show up it's a really good moment where
42:46they're like no we're gonna set her free she hasn't done anything wrong and then and then penwood's like
42:50okay fine she didn't steal the shoe clips but she stole my man and she stole my life and it's
42:55a good
42:55moment you know the judge is like okay if they pay for the value will you drop the charges and
42:59she's
42:59like no it's not about that i love this setup where sophie and benedict are now in the same house
43:04but they're not allowed to be in the same room but like the servants obviously like
43:07you're gonna get in the same room aren't you and then they have a bath together hot steamy we get
43:12tushy from both of them just a good moment benedict and sophie then figure out that like she would have
43:16been left something in the will and they're gonna go investigate that they're into a little heist
43:19mission and get the will and turns out she was left a bunch of stuff but lady penwood has been
43:23keeping around in this torturous prison-like environment because for every year she houses
43:28because for every year she houses sophie she gets 4 000 great british pounds or whatever when they're in
43:33the bath together sophie doesn't want to get pregnant from benedict so he just plays the piano
43:36forte on her piano we have this face-off where stephanie benedict and violet confront lady penwood
43:41and again lady penwood clarifies that she feels like stuff was stolen from her you know this was
43:46her money this was her life that she didn't get with the husband etc etc blame sophie for it i
43:50will
43:50say i would have liked this to go further emotionally feel some more anger and hostility in the emotions
43:56it kind of wraps up a bit neatly for my liking but we jump to the next scene where sophie
44:00is presented
44:02as a woman of society the queen accepts her it's a beautiful moment and again
44:05like it's the show kind of leaning into its toxic attitudes right it's acknowledging look
44:10this is the world that's being set up you're watching the show for this reason you know it's
44:14not a perfect world this isn't ever going to be the show where she starts a revolution and goes it
44:18doesn't matter if we'd kept that kind of kiddie vibe from season three this season might have ended
44:23with her getting all the maids to come to the ball with her but the season chooses to end differently
44:28she is embraced as a woman of society instead and i don't think the show is literally saying like
44:32that's all your value but i i do appreciate the show being grounded in this way to an extent and
44:36being consistent with the world it's set up you can't set up the stakes the entire season that
44:41they can't be together and then just go actually it doesn't matter if i'm of society so i appreciate
44:45them going this way you know the queen says to her you would have made a wonderful diamond which is
44:49a
44:49really beautiful thing to say again i know we can sit there with our modern lens and go oh that's
44:53awful thing to say that's so reductive but like you know it's nice it's sweet benedict brings
44:58sophie out it's really gorgeous moment queen charlotte and lady danbury say bye to each other
45:03it's a really sweet beautiful moment benedict proposes to sophie violet also asks marcus can
45:08they continue doing what they're doing but also being independent and keep seeing each other if that
45:13makes sense like so what benedict was initially proposing to stephanie but not as bad and marcus
45:17goes look i want to make you happy but i also want to make myself happy we then find out
45:21whistle
45:21down is back but it's not penelope she's writing a book so who's whistle down who knows also who cares
45:27benedict and sophie meet in the little gazebo thing they were dancing initially and share a
45:31dance together it's really beautiful really well done and then the season ends with the cliffhanger
45:35of like who is whistle down and i will say as i was saying before i really enjoyed a lot
45:39of this
45:40season clearly everything i just went through i really really loved and was engaging with but in
45:43saying that there was a lot of filler and a lot of scenes where i was like this isn't as
45:47tight as i'd
45:48hoped like the last episode is an hour 17 it should have been 50 minutes like by the end of
45:53that
45:53episode i was sort of like okay all right let's move okay you know which is a shame i think
45:59despite
45:59the great peaks of season four part two i do think there was some time spent on some side characters
46:04that was a little lame and just some pacing issues here and there but overall i'd probably give this
46:08six maybe a seven out of ten like it's pretty good if you're a bridgerton fan you absolutely will
46:13enjoy it like absolutely watch it if i was going to rank the bridgerton seasons i'd probably go i think
46:18the best one is queen charlotte i would go number one queen charlotte then i'd probably go
46:23season one and two are probably tied because there's some things i really love about season
46:26one that aren't in season two and some things i really love about season two that aren't in season
46:30one um and then we have season four a bit below but i still think season four it's not a
46:36massive drop
46:37off in quality it's just pretty good compared to really great and then season three is obviously all
46:41the way down at the bottom season three is bad bad show naughty show anyways thank you so much for
