Phantom from Space is a 1953 independently made American science fiction horror film produced and directed by W. Lee Wilder and starring Ted Cooper, Noreen Nash, Dick Sands, and Burt Wenland. The screenplay was by William Raynor and Myles Wilder. 00:00:09The End
00:00:43This is Washington, D.C., and in the files of the Central Bureau, there is a story so strange in
00:00:50its implications that it defies ordinary classification.
00:00:55It is the story of a handful of people who, in the course of one desperate night, held back a
00:01:01wave of panic and pandemonium.
00:01:05It began after sundown, time 7.15, as Flight A Coast Patrol from Travis Field was returning to base.
00:01:14When the nightly air force transport pointed north toward Japan via the Great Circle route, while at sea, the Navy
00:01:24and Coast Guard maintained their usual round-the-clock vigil.
00:01:29And from the equator to the Arctic, the radar network swept the skies with eyes that never sleep.

00:03:38By 8.25 at the Los Angeles branch of the Communications Commission,
00:03:43reports of strong interference with radio and television reception
00:03:47began to pour in from the beach area.
00:03:50The monitors went to work immediately.
00:03:53Mobile units were ordered to converge on the vicinity of the disturbance.
00:03:58Pinpoint direction-finding devices began to trace the trouble to its source.
00:04:10This is Mobile 1, Hazen speaking.
00:04:13We're at Ocean and Beacon Way, interference strength 2, bearing 27 degrees.
00:04:20Over.

00:04:53Mobile 1, roger.
00:04:54Mobile 7, roger.
00:04:55We'll go now.
00:05:00Okay, Charlie, let's get moving.
00:05:13Yes, what is it?
00:05:14Take me to a phone quick.
00:05:15I need an ambulance.
00:05:16What's the matter?
00:05:17My husband and Pete out there in the picnic grounds just above the beach.
00:05:20They've been hurt.
00:05:21Well, this is a communications car.
00:05:23I'll phone it in from here.
00:05:25A Mobile 1 to Central, over.
00:05:30Did you make that out, Charlie?
00:05:32Not a word.
00:05:33A Mobile 1 to Central, I can't reach you.
00:05:35Repeat.
00:05:39They must be getting us all, right?
00:05:41A Mobile 1 to Central, have an ambulance set to beach at surf.
00:05:44Emergency, two men hurt.
00:05:46Acknowledge.
00:05:49Roger now.
00:05:52I'm sure they'll be here soon now.
00:05:54Tell us what happened.
00:05:55This man, he just kept coming at us.
00:05:57It was awful.
00:05:58Who?
00:05:59I don't know.
00:06:00He was wearing a suit like a diver.
00:06:01Hurry, please.
00:06:02They're hurt.
00:06:04Charlie, you better wait here.
00:06:05I'll go down and take a look.
00:06:10The young woman's hysteria became obvious as they reached the picnic grounds at the beach.
00:06:16There was no sign of the mysterious intruder, and little could be done for her husband and
00:06:21their friend, until the ambulance arrived.
00:06:39Hi, fellas.
00:06:40How are you doing?
00:06:41Oh, we're just taking another reading now.
00:06:43What happened down there?
00:06:45The police took the girl and one of the guys to the station.
00:06:47What about the other one?
00:06:48Well, he's on the way to the morgue.
00:06:50That was her husband.
00:06:51You're right on the button, Charlie.
00:06:5244.7.
00:06:53Report back to Central if you find anything else.
00:06:58Charlie, grab that portable check to beach, will you?
00:07:00Got it right here.
00:07:02I'll pick you up right here in about an hour.
00:07:04Where are you going?
00:07:06Police asked me to drop by the station and sign a report.
00:07:09I'll see you later.
00:07:10If you don't, you know where to look for the body.
00:07:21Like I said, we were just starting to eat, and we heard something tracking through the
00:07:25sand toward us.
00:07:26I looked up and couldn't see anything.
00:07:28Then Betty screamed.
00:07:29At what?
00:07:30I thought you couldn't see anything.
00:07:32At first, we couldn't.
00:07:33Then this guy started toward us.
00:07:35What kind of a guy?
00:07:37How should I know?
00:07:37He was wearing some kind of a helmet over his head.
00:07:39He could have been a deep-sea diver or anything.
00:07:41All right.
00:07:42After you saw this diver, what happened?
00:07:45Well, we jumped up.
00:07:47Ed, that was Betty's husband, he allowed him to stop.
00:07:50But he just kept coming.
00:07:52I never saw anything like it.
00:07:54He didn't say anything.
00:07:55He just kept moving in.
00:07:57Then you say he attacked you.
00:07:59We didn't give him a chance.
00:08:01Ed grabbed a piece of wood and took a swing at him.
00:08:03That didn't stop him.
00:08:04He caught the end.
00:08:05That's all I remember.
00:08:07Just because a man's taking a walk, there's no reason to slug him.
00:08:10Besides, you don't look like a guy who frightened so easy.
00:08:13How would you feel if somebody with a crazy helmet with pipes sticking out of it came at you in
00:08:17the dark?
00:08:18And look, I know this sounds crazy, but there wasn't any head in that helmet.
00:08:24No head.
00:08:26No head at all.
00:08:28It's the truth.
00:08:30I think you need some coffee.
00:08:32I don't want anything.
00:08:35It's all the same to you, Lieutenant.
00:08:37I've got to pick up one of my men at the beach.
00:08:39Okay, thanks for coming down, Hazen.
00:08:41Hope I didn't put you out.
00:08:42No trouble so long.
00:08:43You too.
00:08:48All right, let's start at the beginning.
00:08:51How old did you know of a dead man?
00:08:53And his wife.
00:08:54Betty and I went to school together.
00:08:56And you had a year.
00:08:58How long were they married?
00:09:00About a year.
00:09:01Wasn't her husband a little older than she?
00:09:03I don't know.
00:09:04But you said you and Mrs. Evans went to school together.
00:09:07Then you never discussed anything personal with her?
00:09:09She did mention he was older, yes.
00:09:11How much?
00:09:12Fifteen, twenty years.
00:09:14What difference does that make?
00:09:16That wasn't too hard, now, was it?
00:09:18Where do you live?
00:09:19Six twenty-nine and a half East Palm Court.
00:09:22Why?
00:09:24That's where the Evans live, isn't it?
00:09:26Yeah, I board with them.
00:09:28You do, huh?
00:09:30That Mrs. Evans is a good-looking woman.
00:09:35What are you trying to say?
00:09:44John Bowers.
00:09:46Where?
00:09:49Yeah, I got it.
00:09:51I'll leave right away.
00:09:53Keep it in the murder.
00:09:55Near the beach.
00:09:57Keep an eye on this guy until I get back.
00:10:00What do you mean?
00:10:01You'll stay right where you are.
00:10:03At least until Mrs. Evans feels well enough to talk.
00:10:06What do you want from her?
00:10:07Oh, I just want to see if your story checks with hers.
00:10:10After all, you went to school again, remember?
00:10:24You say there were no witnesses, huh?
00:10:26None yet.
00:10:28Anything missing?
00:10:29I don't think so.
00:10:30The cash register wasn't touched.
00:10:32Get a breakdown in the inventory as soon as you can.
00:10:34What about fingerprints?
00:10:35Boys are working on them now.
00:10:47Sorry, I'm late.
00:10:48What kept you so long?
00:10:49The lieutenant asked me to hang around a while.
00:10:52What's the score?
00:10:53Ah, looks like one of those things.
00:10:55Pretty girl, older husband, young boarder.
00:10:59Kid claims some guy without a head knocked the old man off.
00:11:02Yeah, don't say.
00:11:03Anything else?
00:11:04Yeah, he had a diver's outfit with horns.
00:11:07No.
00:11:08He's going to have to do better than that.
00:11:10How are we doing?
00:11:11I took a reading about ten minutes ago.
00:11:13The radiation has gone out with the tide.
00:11:16What about the radio horn?
00:11:17It's working fine again.
00:11:19I just got a call from Central.
00:11:21They said Mobile 7 picked up some new trouble northeast of here.
00:11:24Here we go again.
00:11:25Hop in.
00:11:37Who reported this murder?
00:11:39There he is there.
00:11:41He lives next door.
00:11:42His name's George Nelson.
00:11:43Hey, Mr. Nelson.
00:11:44Yes, sir.
00:11:44Come here, will you?
00:11:47I'm Lieutenant Bowers, Homicide.
00:11:49You found this, buddy?
00:11:50That's right.
00:11:50He must have just locked up for the night when this happened.
00:11:52How do you know that?
00:11:53Well, he usually does around this time.
00:11:55What were you doing here?
00:11:56I was sitting home watching the fights on TV, and all of a sudden the things start acting up.
00:12:00What has that got to do with it?
00:12:02Well, you don't know the set.
00:12:03You know, it wouldn't work at all when I came home to supper.
00:12:05Then all of a sudden it cleared up fine.
00:12:08So I thought, well, I'll get set to look at the fights again, and all of a sudden out it
00:12:11goes again.
00:12:12So I thought maybe the battery station down here was overcharged in the circuit, and so I came down to
00:12:16take a look.
00:12:17That's all.
00:12:18Hey, don't you ever quit work?
00:12:20What's up this time?
00:12:23Another murder?
00:12:25What are you doing here, Hazen?
00:12:27Same as before.
00:12:28Still trying to track down that signal in a second.
00:12:30Hey, does that stuff work on TV, too?
00:12:32It has been for hours.
00:12:33What'd I tell you?
00:12:35What's the matter?
00:12:36Seems to set one on the blank.
00:12:38Well, at least we know we're on the right track.
00:12:40How'd you make out with that border?
00:12:42You're still sticking to a story.
00:12:44The guy had no head.
00:12:45Well, I'll be seeing you.
00:12:46So long.
00:12:47Right.
00:12:47Come on, John.
00:12:49Hey.
00:13:00And so the communications team resumed its mission, to track the mysterious interference
00:13:06to its source.
00:13:08Via accurate readings taken at regular intervals, by stationary and mobile units, it was determined
00:13:16that the disturbance was moving in a northeasterly direction.
00:13:21By 1034, Mobile Center had pinpointed the disturbance at the edge of the Huntington oil fields.
00:13:29Units one and seven were instructed to close in.
00:13:40Hey, Charlie, do you see what I see?
00:13:42Yeah, the oil field.
00:13:44Well, let's hope our trouble's burning up.
00:13:47Well, there's only one way to find out.
00:13:55Look, Sarge.
00:13:57Two murders and an explosion in one precinct is big news.
00:14:00Now, come on.
00:14:01You can't pin it all on the young border.
00:14:03Now, can you?
00:14:06Very funny.
00:14:11Yeah?
00:14:11I'm Hazen of the communications commission.
00:14:13Oh, the lieutenant's waiting for you.
00:14:18There's a wheel.
00:14:19You heard the man.
00:14:20Communications commission.
00:14:22So, it's just kind of interference happens very often.
00:14:26Never anything like this.
00:14:28It's on the move all the time.
00:14:29Means some ham with a transmitter in the car.
00:14:31It's not a transmitter.
00:14:33We don't get a definite disturbance.
00:14:35It's just interference.
00:14:36Mm-hmm.
00:14:38Then you have no idea of what it is, huh?
00:14:41Not yet.
00:14:42How are you making up?
00:14:43Not so good.
00:14:45He was here when I questioned that boy about the murder at the beach.
00:14:48You got anything more out of him?
00:14:50Yeah.
00:14:51Come on with me.
00:14:52You might want to see this.
00:14:59Ah, I see you're just about done.
00:15:01Thanks.
00:15:01You can go now.
00:15:07Are you sure this is what the man looks like?
00:15:10What do you say, Betty?
00:15:13Well, just about.
00:15:14Only I think the tubes were a little lower down.
00:15:16And you still insist there was no head inside the helmet?
00:15:18I'm positive there wasn't.
00:15:20What about you?
00:15:22Well, it was dark.
00:15:23I couldn't swear to it.
00:15:24Thanks.
00:15:25That'll be all.
00:15:26You mean we can go now?
00:15:28Yeah, for the time being.
00:15:29Just stick close to home.
00:15:30I may want to see you again tomorrow.
00:15:32We'll be there.
00:15:33Come on, Betty.
00:15:34Kind of changed your mind about those two, haven't you?
00:15:37Yeah, I guess I have.
00:15:38Hey, we'll bring in the old man, will you?
00:15:42Don't tell me you believe this story about this whatever it is.
00:15:45I know.
00:15:46It sounds as phony as it ever did.
00:15:48But...
00:15:48Oh, sit down, will you please?
00:15:50You're the, uh, watchman at the Huntington oil fields?
00:15:53Oh, yes, sir.
00:15:54I've been with the company for over 22 years, sit down.
00:15:56Will you tell Mr. Hazen here exactly what happened?
00:15:58Well, sir, like I said before, I was just closing the gate for the night when I saw this fellow
00:16:03coming up.
00:16:04I was never so scared in my life.
00:16:06Yes, go on.
00:16:07Well, it wasn't the man so much as the suit he was wearing.
00:16:11Well, he wouldn't stop when I hollered at him.
00:16:13He just pushed his way right in through the gate and walked right up to the tank.
00:16:17Well, you carry a gun.
00:16:18Did you try to stop him?
00:16:19Oh, well, there was much to close the tank.
00:16:22I was afraid to shoot.
00:16:23So I thought I might call for help.
00:16:25Just to cut to the shack, the tank blew up.
00:16:28Oh, you should see this side.
00:16:30Yeah, uh, sir, can you give us a description of this man?
00:16:33How would you say he was dressed?
00:16:35Well, sir, like I said before, he wore a sort of a, a sort of pliers, uh, not outfit, with
00:16:42a helmet attached to it.
00:16:43How tall was he?
00:16:44Oh, he was a giant of a man.
00:16:47And he had tubes sticking out of that thingy, that helmet he wore.
00:16:50Uh, can you tell us what his face looked like?
00:16:54Oh, sir, though you got pretty close to me, I could swear the man had no face.
00:17:00Now, if you saw this man again, would you recognize him?
00:17:02I mean by his outfit.
00:17:04Oh, I'll never forget that sight if I lived to be a hundred, sir.
00:17:08Would you say this is the man?
00:17:11Wait, sure, that, that's him.
00:17:13Thank you very much, you may go now.
00:17:15All right, sir.
00:17:19Well, Hazen, what do you say now?
00:17:23Beats me.
00:17:24Descriptions check, all right.
00:17:26This could be some kind of flying suit.
00:17:28High altitude equivalent.
00:17:30Yeah, that's what I've been thinking.
00:17:31Well, how do you explain that stuff about the missing head?
00:17:33Nah, we can discount that.
00:17:35These people were frightened.
00:17:37It was a night, nobody really took a close look at it.
00:17:39I guess you're right.
00:17:40But whoever he is, that offer doesn't look like one of ours.
00:17:43Of course, he could have been dropped by a parachute.
00:17:47You mean sabotage?
00:17:49I think we'd better wire a report to Washington, see what they say.
00:17:52Yeah, you can use our teletype.
00:17:54I'll tip off the only place to be pleased to be on the lookout for something unusual.
00:17:58Hey, wait a minute, what about the press?
00:17:59Oh, I don't think they know too much now.
00:18:01You better keep it that way for a while at least,
00:18:03till we find out whether our friend is still around here.
00:18:05Well, if he is, I think we can find him for you.
00:18:08Well, my hunch is that he's carrying something around that's causing all this disturbance,
00:18:12whether he knows it or not.
00:18:20Yeah.
00:18:21Kill that page one lead.
00:18:22They let the border and the girl go.
00:18:24Hmm?
00:18:24How do I know?
00:18:26Maybe the lieutenant thinks that the guy in a flying suit knocked off the husband.
00:18:31Mm-hmm.
00:18:31Nah.
00:18:32No, no, not a chance.
00:18:33Not a chance of an exclusive on that picture.
00:18:35They're making a blanket release in the morning.
00:18:38Hmm?
00:18:39Oh, there's a guy from the communications commission in there now.
00:18:42I'll call you back later if there's anything new.
00:18:44Okay.
00:18:50Come in.
00:18:52Sorry to interrupt you, lieutenant.
00:18:53Yeah, what is it, Jim?
00:18:54There's a teletype cam for you.
00:18:55Oh, thanks, Jim.
00:18:56We're waiting for it.
00:18:57That was fast.
00:19:01Well, here's our answer.
00:19:02Looks like they never sleep in Washington.
00:19:05Says to contact a Major Andrews,
00:19:07care of Dr. Wyatt,
00:19:08director of the Griffith Institute.
00:19:11It's kind of late.
00:19:12Then I'll give him a call.
00:19:13Well, you're at it.
00:19:14I'll go out the car and check from the Central.
00:19:15Okay.
00:19:24Well, that's the story up till now.
00:19:26We got in touch with Washington.
00:19:28They told us to contact you here.
00:19:31Hmm?
00:19:32Very interesting.
00:19:34What do you think, doctor?
00:19:38When I see something like this,
00:19:40I understand why you gentlemen
00:19:41might have thought sabotage was involved.
00:19:44Lieutenant, are you sure there were no traces
00:19:46of this saboteur, this X-man,
00:19:49found after the explosion in the oil field?
00:19:51Fire the problem went over every inch of the area.
00:19:55Didn't come up with a thing.
00:19:57Well, then there's a strong possibility
00:19:59that he might have perished in the explosion itself.
00:20:01I doubt that.
00:20:03We're pretty well convinced
00:20:04this man is carrying something
00:20:06that's responsible for all the signal interference.
00:20:10According to the last report I got,
00:20:12there was a definite disturbance
00:20:14about three miles east of the oil fields,
00:20:17sometime after the explosion.
00:20:19Well, then if he's alive,
00:20:21you should be able to keep an accurate check
00:20:22of his whereabouts.
00:20:23It's not that easy.
00:20:24As a matter of fact,
00:20:25we lost contact about three-quarters of an hour ago.
00:20:27Maybe you realized you were trailing him
00:20:29and got rid of whatever he had
00:20:30that was causing the disturbance.
00:20:32In that case,
00:20:33there's nothing much my department can do to help you.
00:20:36I guess it's up to us.
00:20:39Unless you have some suggestions.
00:20:40Well, let me think out loud for a minute.
00:20:43It might just be
00:20:44that what we've been talking about so far,
00:20:46and this phantom, as we'll call him,
00:20:49ties in with what the doctor and I have been discussing.
00:20:51That is very possible.
00:20:54I don't know whether you know it or not,
00:20:56but somewhere around 7.30 this evening,
00:20:59our radar networks picked up an unidentified object
00:21:02off Point Barrow, Alaska.
00:21:04They traced it clear down to Santa Monica
00:21:06before they lost it.
00:21:08Santa Monica?
00:21:10That's where we first picked up our radio interference.
00:21:12Yeah.
00:21:13Right at the scene of the murder.
00:21:15Well, then, if all these things tally up,
00:21:17we've got some idea of how our man got here.
00:21:19You mean that he came at some plane?
00:21:21In that case, somebody would have seen it land
00:21:23and take off again.
00:21:25Or did it crash?
00:21:26No.
00:21:27No, we don't think it was a plane.
00:21:30No rocket or jet that has been built so far
00:21:32can attain the speeds of 5,000 miles an hour,
00:21:36particularly for such a great distance.
00:21:38And maybe we're on the wrong track altogether.
00:21:41Couldn't your unidentified object have been a meteor?
00:21:44They travel at a terrific speed.
00:21:46Yes, fast enough for most of them
00:21:48to burn themselves out.
00:21:49The moment they hit the Earth's atmosphere?
00:21:53And did it occur to you
00:21:55that meteors are not very likely
00:21:57to travel horizontally
00:21:58all the way from the North Pole to California?
00:22:02Well, if it wasn't a meteor or a flying missile of some type,
00:22:07how do you figure this phantom ties in?
00:22:09We're not sure that he does.
00:22:12I don't care what you say,
00:22:14but it doesn't make sense to me.
00:22:16Anybody trained in sabotage would stay undercover.
00:22:20This guy's walking around in a monkey suit,
00:22:23killing people.
00:22:27Excuse me, Dr. Watt.
00:22:29Is there a Lieutenant Bowers in here?
00:22:30Oh, yes.
00:22:31What is it, miss?
00:22:32There's a Mr. Wakeman from the Chronicle here to see you.
00:22:35Wakeman here?
00:22:37What does he want?
00:22:38Well, there's only one way to find out.
00:22:40Before you go, Lieutenant,
00:22:41I don't believe you have met my assistant,
00:22:43Barbara Randall.
00:22:45Well, hello.
00:22:46Hello.
00:22:49It's Mrs. Randall, Lieutenant.
00:22:52I'll be right back.
00:22:55Barbara, you know the major?
00:22:56Of course.
00:22:57And this is Mr.
00:22:58The Communications Commission.
00:22:59How do you do?
00:23:00Well, I see you're working a little later tonight than usual.
00:23:03Yes, my husband's teaching a late class,
00:23:05and he won't be able to pick me up for a while.
00:23:07Besides, I had some work to do in the lab.
00:23:09Well, at least you'll have lots of company.
00:23:12All right.
00:23:13So I shouldn't have come up here.
00:23:14But I've got to get you a wrangle on this beach emergency.
00:23:17And your whole department is shut up.
00:23:18Look, Wakeman, will you stop bothering me?
00:23:20There's nothing to say.
00:23:23If you've got an exclusive story from that Evans, Damon, or Barbara,
00:23:25then you know as much as I do.
00:23:27Yeah, but that still doesn't explain anything about the guy without a head.
00:23:31Come on.
00:23:31Who is it?
00:23:33Your guess is as good as mine.
00:23:36You mean you let those two kids go without knowing that?
00:23:40I don't buy it.
00:23:41Well, I did.
00:23:43Well, then you must have an awful good reason.
00:23:47I bet you're trying to tie it in with that other murder.
00:23:51All right, Lieutenant.
00:23:53Don't tell me.
00:23:55I'll get my story somehow.
00:23:58Oh.
00:23:59If you want to know how things turn out,
00:24:00read the Chronicle in the morning.
00:24:05That's right.
00:24:06I'll get in touch with Charlie and Mobile One and have him call for me here.
00:24:10Okay, honey.
00:24:11Won't you come up with anything?
00:24:13No, they're just briefing Barbara here.
00:24:15It's just amazing the way you've been able to put these things together.
00:24:19Don't kid yourself, Mr., Mrs. Randall.
00:24:22It seems the press knows as much about it as we do.
00:24:25Well, let's hope they don't come to the same conclusions.
00:24:28A few lurid headlines and every fool on the contrary will be seeing phantoms in space suits
00:24:32and men from Mars all over the place.
00:24:34Yes, I can imagine.
00:24:36And mass hysteria is difficult to check once it gets started.
00:24:39That's why we've got to move fast.
00:24:42Well, from the looks of things, I guess it's up to me.
00:24:45I'll be in touch with you as soon as I turn it.
00:24:48See you.
00:24:49By 12.30 a.m., the dragnet was in operation.
00:24:53Mobile units patrolled the streets and countryside.
00:24:56They covered an area 35 miles square.
00:25:01Special and sensitive equipment was prepared for action.
00:25:05Everyone on the job was ready to move on the first signal from the Communications Commission.
00:25:12Monitor Corona to Mobile Center, strength four.
00:25:16Brickyard at 160th, moving toward oil fields.
00:25:20Contact your units.
00:25:21Over and out.
00:25:24Units one and seven from Mobile Center.
00:25:26Units one and seven from Mobile Center.
00:25:28Strength four, interference at 160th in the oil field.
00:25:32Moving due east.
00:25:34Close in.
00:25:35Repeating.
00:25:36Strength four, interference at 160th in the oil field.
00:25:39Close in.
00:25:41Close in.
00:26:06Clear here, Joe.
00:26:07Just got here, trying to set this up.
00:26:09What gives, Jason?
00:26:10It's in this area, all right.
00:26:11I thought it was a gaggy counter.
00:26:13Thank you, Doctor.
00:26:13Quite a walk over those oil fields.
00:26:15Well, it doesn't register as far as the oil fields.
00:26:17I think we'll do better if we split up now.
00:26:18Right, Lieutenant.
00:26:19You two go that way.
00:26:20Lieutenant, out here.
00:26:21Joe, you follow him.
00:26:22Come on, Doctor.
00:26:23And you?
00:26:24Oh, forget it.
00:26:43Hey, look at this.
00:26:46Yeah.
00:26:47Port's this way.
00:26:49Hey, Joe.
00:26:50Joe.
00:27:05Hey, Hazen.
00:27:07603.
00:27:13Going strong.
00:27:15That's it, Doctor.
00:27:16That's it, Doctor.
00:27:28It's leading this way.
00:27:32Come on.
00:28:00It's this way.
00:28:01Come on.
00:28:30They're going strong.
00:28:32They're going strong.
00:28:32Good.
00:28:33That's right.
00:28:34Check's with me.
00:28:35Sure does.
00:28:36He's here.
00:28:37We saw him.
00:28:39There he goes.
00:28:40Come on.
00:28:45Where is?
00:28:47There's probably around here somewhere.
00:28:49Yeah, we've got to get in the room.
00:28:50Vince, go get a lock.
00:28:52Let's get out.
00:28:55Let's cut him off.
00:28:56Come on.
00:28:57Come on to here.
00:29:06Anybody see him?
00:29:09There he is.
00:29:12There he is.
00:29:29We'll give you ten seconds of coming out of there.
00:29:31Starting now.
00:29:32One.
00:29:33Two.
00:29:34Three.
00:29:35Four.
00:29:36Five.
00:29:37Six.
00:29:38Seven.
00:29:39Eight.
00:29:41Nine.
00:29:42Ten.
00:29:43We're going in.
00:29:44Help you guys cover the door.
00:29:45Come on.
00:29:45Nine.
00:29:56There's nobody in here.
00:29:58It's impossible.
00:29:58We saw him come in.
00:29:59Maybe he went out of the window.
00:30:01We won't get very far.
00:30:02Don't touch anything until we check for fingerprints.
00:30:04What up?
00:30:05Over here.
00:30:06He left his suit and his helmet.
00:30:08Hey, let's spread that thing out so I can get a good shot of it.
00:30:11Go away, you fool.
00:30:12What's the matter?
00:30:12For your information, that's a Geiger counter and it says hands off.
00:30:15I think you'd better wait outside.
00:30:17I just have a job to do.
00:30:18So do we.
00:30:19And I'm afraid I'll have to come first.
00:30:21There's no radiation from the helmet.
00:30:23But look at this.
00:30:27So that's what's been causing all this trouble.
00:30:30Charlie, you know where we can pick up a lead-lined box in a hurry?
00:30:33Well, Mobile 7 should have one.
00:30:34They're right outside.
00:30:35I'll take a look.
00:30:36Hurry it up, will you?
00:30:37Unbelievable.
00:30:38Now, we all thought that this tantrum might be carrying some device
00:30:41which was causing all the signal interference.
00:30:43But to learn that it's due to the very close on his body.
00:30:47That's not the only thing that bothers me.
00:30:49Did any of you get a good look at his face?
00:30:51Not me.
00:30:52He's too far away.
00:30:53Well, I did.
00:30:54Unless I'm mistaken.
00:30:55That helmet was empty.
00:30:56Hey, where am I going to put this stuff?
00:30:59Oh, put it to Dr. Wyatt's station.
00:31:00Let me take it back to the Institute.
00:31:01Right.
00:31:03Pardon me.
00:31:05No, that's all right.
00:31:06You can't handle that.
00:31:22Any luck?
00:31:23Not a sign of him.
00:31:25The boys are still searching the grounds.
00:31:27For what?
00:31:27Nobody knows what he looks like without that outfit.
00:31:29Well, better than that, Major.
00:31:30The reporter got a flash picture of him
00:31:32and I just happened to borrow that film.
00:31:34It's on its way to headquarters right now to be developed.
00:31:36Good.
00:31:36Send us a present as soon as you can.
00:31:38Sure.
00:31:38Lieutenant, are you sure you don't want to come with us?
00:31:40We want to make a few tests at the lab.
00:31:42I'd like to, Doctor.
00:31:44Would you know the situation?
00:31:45I've got to get that guy.
00:31:47Let me know how you make out, will you?
00:31:48Yeah, we'll do that.
00:31:48Sure.
00:31:50Let me know how you make out.
00:32:40Let me know how you make out.
00:32:55Good evening, Doctor.
00:32:57We're just on our way home and we saw you drive in.
00:32:59Good evening, Barbara.
00:33:00Hello, Bill.
00:33:01I see we've got here just in time.
00:33:03Anything new?
00:33:04Lots of excitement, but that's all.
00:33:06Major, you know Barbara's husband?
00:33:08Oh, of course.
00:33:09How are you?
00:33:09How are you?
00:33:10There, it's a nice-looking dog you've got there.
00:33:12What's his name?
00:33:13His name?
00:33:14Venus?
00:33:15Say, Bill, I hate to ask this, but something important has come up and I wonder, can we borrow
00:33:21Barbara for about an hour or so?
00:33:22Well, I suppose so.
00:33:24Of course.
00:33:26Darling, why don't you go and do the shopping?
00:33:28Here's the list.
00:33:29The market's open all evening.
00:33:32I may as well.
00:33:33See you later, darling.
00:33:35I'll take the dog and tie her up.
00:33:37Thank you, Bill.
00:33:38Good night.
00:33:38Good night.
00:33:40I'll give you a hand with it.
00:33:41Oh, thanks, Doc.
00:33:42Easy now.
00:33:43Look out for your fingers.
00:33:44All right.
00:33:46All right.
00:33:48Look out.
00:33:49Now, don't drop it.
00:33:51Venus, come back here.
00:33:52Venus, come back here.
00:34:16Venus, come back here.
00:34:19What's the matter?
00:34:21There's no one in there.
00:34:22Come on, come here.
00:34:24See, Venus?
00:34:25Look, there's no one in here.
00:34:27Come on, dear girl.
00:34:29You know you're not allowed in here.
00:34:33Venus, I said be quiet.
00:34:35Come on, girl.
00:34:48Now, you stay right here, Venus.
00:34:49And I don't want to hear one sound on it.
00:34:58You were right, Doctor.
00:34:59There are no fingerprints anywhere.
00:35:01What's all this?
00:35:03Hey, don't touch anything.
00:35:04You better put some gloves on.
00:35:06Our friend, Mr. X, left this suit at the oil refinery.
00:35:09You mean you were that close to him and you didn't catch him?
00:35:11I'm afraid so.
00:35:13That's up to the police now.
00:35:15Hand me those sheds.
00:35:16I want to cut that piece of this material to work with it.
00:35:27Say, you better have those sharpened.
00:35:28But I just bought them.
00:35:30All right.
00:35:31Here, try this knife.
00:35:38That still won't cut.
00:35:39Let me try.
00:35:49This stuff is tougher than nylon.
00:35:51Why don't I try it over a Bunsen burner?
00:36:05It doesn't burn either.
00:36:08Let's take a look at it under the microscope.
00:36:09Look, it's magnetic.
00:36:12Magnetic?
00:36:15You're...
00:36:16Radioactive.
00:36:18And apparently indestructible.
00:36:35What's the matter?
00:36:37You tell me.
00:36:39Take a look at that weave.
00:36:45What weave?
00:36:47There is none.
00:36:51This material is one solid mass.
00:36:53Mathias.
00:36:59Why, you're right.
00:37:00It must be some sort of plastic.
00:37:03Well, I'd say it's a metallic substance of some kind.
00:37:06Well, I've seen a lot of interesting alloys, but never anything like this.
00:37:10Let's try an acid test.
00:37:11All right.
00:37:12Go ahead.
00:37:16Careful now.
00:37:17We'll only take a drop or two.
00:37:20It repels acid like a raincoat repels water.
00:37:24Why, there's no reaction.
00:37:29Well, Major,
00:37:30this looks as though we were going to be here for a long time.
00:37:44Now we have it.
00:37:46The helmet is not radioactive.
00:37:49The suit is.
00:37:52There is no doubt.
00:37:54This spacesuit is conditioned to function above 63,000 feet.
00:37:58But a human drug would boil,
00:38:00resulting in the body expanding to twice its size.
00:38:03And death, of course.
00:38:05I know.
00:38:07And it must withstand pressure and counterpressure.
00:38:10Also, it must be so supercharged it can function in thin atmosphere.
00:38:13Now, let's see what it is that is left in this breathing apparatus.
00:38:17Well, how are you doing?
00:38:19The gas in the helmet tank breaks down to 11% methane.
00:38:24Ordinary marsh gas?
00:38:25What's the rest of the formula?
00:38:26Oh, that's where I'm stuck.
00:38:28I can't figure it out.
00:38:29It just doesn't respond to any of the usual tests.
00:38:32Well, how could anyone exist on that combination of gases?
00:38:35You and I couldn't.
00:38:37But apparently, someone can.
00:38:40Doctor, are you trying to say that our X-Man doesn't breathe oxygen
00:38:44and hasn't the metabolism of a normal human?
00:38:48I really don't know.
00:38:50From what we've seen,
00:38:52he has some visitor characteristics which make him appear human.
00:38:57But added to them is this fabulous radioactivity
00:39:00that none of us could send.
00:39:04I am present.
00:39:31I think the answer lies right here in this helmet.
00:39:33Obviously, he needs it to survive.
00:39:35Otherwise, he wouldn't have risked wearing it
00:39:37where he was sure to be recognized.
00:39:38As it is, he only took it off when he was cornered.
00:39:41Well, if what you say is true,
00:39:42how can he exist without it now?
00:39:44Let me put it this way.
00:39:46It's like a patient in an iron lung.
00:39:48Sometimes one can be removed for hours at a time
00:39:50without any ill effects.
00:39:51Exactly.
00:39:52And I think the same principle applies here.
00:39:54And that means sooner or later,
00:39:56he has to get his breathing apparatus back
00:39:58or die.
00:40:00I don't understand.
00:40:00Well, I've got an idea.
00:40:03If we were to return this whole outfit
00:40:05to where he left it,
00:40:07he might be tempted to come back to us.
00:40:13Dr. Wyatt speaking.
00:40:14Yes, he's here.
00:40:16No, thank you.
00:40:17Hello, Major.
00:40:20Still at it, huh?
00:40:21Mm-hmm.
00:40:23No, we haven't got a thing, no.
00:40:25The picture?
00:40:29Yeah, hold on.
00:40:30He says the picture the reporter took of our man
00:40:32didn't come out.
00:40:33I was afraid of something like that.
00:40:35The radioactivity must have burned the emulsion.
00:40:37Hello.
00:40:39No.
00:40:40No, we didn't find any fingerprints at all in his clothes.
00:40:43Did you find any?
00:40:46Not too bad.
00:40:48Hello?
00:40:50Will you wait there, please?
00:40:52We don't know what to make of this either.
00:40:54Have you heard from the communication boys yet?
00:40:57Well, let's hope they turn up with something.
00:40:59Major, excuse me.
00:41:01Hold on a second.
00:41:01Yes.
00:41:02It's Mr. Waitman of the Chronicle.
00:41:03He insists upon seeing you.
00:41:05He does.
00:41:05Where is he?
00:41:06I told him to wait in the lobby.
00:41:07Good.
00:41:08Hello?
00:41:09And it's our friend from the press that's here.
00:41:19Don't worry.
00:41:20I wouldn't dare let anyone in on anything.
00:41:22At least not until we get something concrete.
00:41:25Right.
00:41:26All right.
00:41:26I'll see you later.
00:41:29Well, I guess I'd better see this newspaper man.
00:41:31Want to come along, Doctor?
00:41:33I think I will.
00:41:42Oh, hello.
00:41:44Remember me?
00:41:45Certainly, yes.
00:41:46A nice lot of gadgets you got here.
00:41:48Do you think so?
00:41:49What's on your mind?
00:41:50Well, I was wondering if you might let me take a couple of pictures of that suit you brought up
00:41:53here.
00:41:53I'm sorry.
00:41:54We can't do that.
00:41:55Oh.
00:41:56Well, now, look.
00:41:57I got a wonderful picture of the guy running in the shack,
00:41:59and the lieutenant stuck his nose in my business, and what do I get?
00:42:02A blank.
00:42:18Is that you, Doctor?
00:42:43Well, you must have some lead on this guy, otherwise you wouldn't have brought that suit up here.
00:42:46Well, let's just say we were curious.
00:43:00Hello, Bill.
00:43:02Are you back so soon?
00:43:03Isn't Barbara through?
00:43:04I don't know.
00:43:06If she's still in the lab, why don't you go up and see?
00:43:08Thanks.
00:43:08I will.
00:43:16Barbara.
00:43:18Barbara?
00:43:19Barbara, are you in there?
00:43:19Bill, listen to me.
00:43:22I'm not alone.
00:43:23Someone is in here with me.
00:43:26I can't see him.
00:43:28He locked the door and has the key.
00:43:31I'll break the door down.
00:43:32No, Bill, don't.
00:43:33Please.
00:43:34You better get help.
00:43:36You mean I've come all the way up here for nothing?
00:43:38I'm afraid so.
00:43:40Good night.
00:43:41Yes.
00:43:41Good night, Mr. Wakeman.
00:43:43Good night.
00:43:54Major, come quick.
00:43:55What's the matter?
00:43:56What's the matter?
00:43:56Where's Barbara?
00:43:57In the lab.
00:43:58The door's locked and there's someone in there with me.
00:44:08I thought you said the door was locked.
00:44:09It was.
00:44:10She's gone.
00:44:11Oh, cover the main entrance.
00:44:12That's the only way anybody could leave.
00:44:14I will.
00:44:14Well, in that case, we would have seen her on our way up.
00:44:16Well, then she must still be in the building.
00:44:17We'd better split up.
00:44:18I'll take the roof.
00:44:21Barbara!
00:44:23Barbara!
00:44:24Barbara!
00:44:26Barbara!
00:44:31Barbara!
00:44:33Where are you?
00:44:35Barbara!
00:44:52Barbara!
00:44:54Barbara!
00:44:57Barbara!
00:44:58Barbara!
00:44:59Barbara!
00:45:02Where are you?
00:45:06Barbara!
00:45:09Barbara!
00:45:12Barbara!
00:45:13Where are you?
00:45:16Barbara!
00:45:23Any side of her?
00:45:25Not yet.
00:45:26She must be around here someplace.
00:45:28Now, you stay here. Watch the main entrance.
00:45:31And I'll check the basement.
00:45:32All right.
00:46:18She's not up there.
00:46:20Where's the doctor?
00:46:21He went down to the basement.
00:46:22Here he comes.
00:46:24You didn't find her?
00:46:25No.
00:46:26I'd better call the police.
00:46:27But there's no telling what could happen to her in the meantime.
00:46:30Now, now, take it easy. We're doing the best we can.
00:46:32But she said she was locked in.
00:46:34And she couldn't see who did it.
00:46:37Can you explain that?
00:46:38No.
00:46:40Not yet.
00:47:01Who are you?
00:47:07Don't come near me.
00:47:10I'm warning you.
00:47:11Don't come near me.
00:47:20Don't!
00:47:32Don't!
00:47:32The code.
00:47:34I don't understand.
00:47:37You're trying to tell me you needed to breathe.
00:47:39And there isn't much left in the tank.
00:47:41Not yet.
00:47:43Not yet.
00:47:44One.
00:47:45Two.
00:47:45One.
00:47:46One.
00:47:47Two.
00:47:48Three.
00:47:52I'm ready.
00:47:53I'll write it down.
00:48:06One.
00:48:07One.
00:48:08Two.
00:48:08One.
00:48:09One.
00:48:10Two.
00:48:10Two.
00:48:24In the lab.
00:48:39No, please, don't.
00:48:43She's in there.
00:48:45Widra!
00:48:47I can see it happening from the old bombardment.
00:48:50The bombardment is in, I'm sure so.
00:48:55Darling, are you all right?
00:48:56I think so.
00:48:57I'm looking for it.
00:48:58I just saw it.
00:48:59So it must be in here.
00:49:09I can see it.
00:49:11I can see it.
00:49:11I can see it.
00:49:14I can see it.
00:49:27It was frightening.
00:49:30I couldn't see him. I didn't know what to do.
00:49:32Come here, quick.
00:49:36Oh, you disintegrated.
00:49:40This is amazing.
00:49:58Now, now. Quiet down, Venus. Quiet down.
00:50:05Down.
00:50:29Mobile Center for Mobile One, come in, please.
00:50:32This is Mobile Center. Go ahead.
00:50:34Get hold of Major Andrews or Dr. Wyatt at the Institute.
00:50:38I want to talk to either one of them.
00:50:40Oh, will do. Stand by Mobile One.
00:50:45Dr. Wyatt speaking.
00:50:47Oh, yes, Mr. Hazen.
00:50:50Yes, we're still at it.
00:50:53Lots and lots of excitement, but nothing's happened yet.
00:50:57Have you anything to say?
00:50:59The trouble seems to be just about gone.
00:51:01We got a flash in the direction of the observatory once in a while,
00:51:05but I figure that's because of the outfit you're testing.
00:51:11Yes.
00:51:12Lieutenant Bowers ought to be here any minute.
00:51:15Of course.
00:51:16How long will it take you to get up here?
00:51:19Good. See you then.
00:51:26Thank you, gentlemen.
00:51:27Put it down here, please.
00:51:28Barbara, putting that cord in over there.
00:51:31Now you're going to see...
00:51:32I have to resort to ultraviolet light
00:51:35in order to show you what little there is left of the spacesuit.
00:51:43As you can see, it has reduced itself to this liquid,
00:51:47and it is in an evaporating stage.
00:51:50The helmet is in the lab and still intact.
00:52:01This is amazing.
00:52:04All the radiation in this suit would...
00:52:06Why, it'd be fatal to a normal human being wearing it.
00:52:09Of course.
00:52:10And furthermore,
00:52:12our respiratory system could never simulate gases
00:52:16such as we have found in that breathing device.
00:52:18Well, then we have to assume our so-called X-Man
00:52:21carried his own atmosphere with him.
00:52:23Excuse me.
00:52:24But as a matter of curiosity,
00:52:27why do we refer to this thing as a hymn?
00:52:30I thought it was invisible.
00:52:32Under normal conditions, yes.
00:52:34Yet,
00:52:36Mrs. Randall did see the imprint of a large foot
00:52:39and a masculine hand under ultraviolet light.
00:52:42How do you explain that?
00:52:45I don't know,
00:52:46but the human body is composed of various elements
00:52:51with a carbon base.
00:52:52Like coal?
00:52:54Yes.
00:52:55Now,
00:52:56suppose we maintain the same chemical composition
00:52:59in the body of the X-Man,
00:53:00but substitute silica for carbon.
00:53:04Silica, that's glass.
00:53:05Exactly.
00:53:06Now,
00:53:07it is possible that the body with such a base,
00:53:09if it were subjected to an atmosphere
00:53:11foreign to its origin,
00:53:13might appear invisible to our eyes.
00:53:17Are you trying to say, Doctor,
00:53:19that we're not dealing with a human being?
00:53:22I didn't say that.
00:53:26On the contrary,
00:53:28all the evidence points in the opposite direction.
00:53:32toward a superhuman
00:53:33with an intelligence far superior to our own.
00:53:36How can you tell?
00:53:38First of all,
00:53:39Mrs. Randall saw that he has a hand
00:53:40with digits like our own fingers
00:53:44and a thumb opposing.
00:53:46That alone is a sign of intelligence.
00:53:49And he comes from a civilization
00:53:51that has developed adequate space transportation
00:53:55to enable him to travel to Earth.
00:53:58We have nothing yet
00:54:00that can reach even another planet
00:54:03in our own solar system.
00:54:04That could account for the unidentified objects
00:54:07picked up by radar a few hours ago.
00:54:09My theory is
00:54:10that the spaceship,
00:54:13or whatever it was that he came in,
00:54:15operated on the principle of
00:54:18magnetic rather than atomic proportion,
00:54:21and that somewhere in the outer limits
00:54:23met with a condition
00:54:25where the Earth's gravity pulled it down
00:54:28and it fell into the ocean.
00:54:29And that he managed to save his life
00:54:32and reach shore.
00:54:35You really can pick up
00:54:36any type of communications interference,
00:54:38no matter how weak the signal may be.
00:54:40Sure thing.
00:54:41We were on his trail
00:54:42from the minute he left the beach.
00:54:44I never knew you carried
00:54:45such sensitive instruments in your car.
00:54:52What you told us is very interesting, Doctor.
00:54:54But I've got to make an official report
00:54:56to headquarters.
00:54:57Are you willing to be quoted
00:54:59that the criminal we're after
00:55:00is a creature from another world?
00:55:02All I can say is
00:55:04we know that our Earth
00:55:06is not the only planet capable
00:55:07of sustaining life
00:55:09in one form or another.
00:55:12You can quote that.
00:55:13All I've got to go by
00:55:14is this and footprints in a hand.
00:55:16There isn't much.
00:55:18No fingerprints,
00:55:19no description,
00:55:20no nothing.
00:55:21And we're after a killer.
00:55:24Has it occurred to you
00:55:25that our X-Man
00:55:26has no apparent motivation
00:55:27for his acts?
00:55:28And might therefore
00:55:29not be an intentional criminal at all?
00:55:31You have a point there.
00:55:33Hey, wait a minute.
00:55:35Come to think of it,
00:55:36the young Bauder we suspected,
00:55:37he did say that the girl's husband
00:55:39threw the first punch.
00:55:40So?
00:55:40So that could have been enough
00:55:42to provoke the strange creature.
00:55:43And the same could have happened
00:55:44at the second murder.
00:55:46Sure.
00:55:47What about the fire
00:55:48in the oil fields?
00:55:49Evidently our man
00:55:50sensed the presence
00:55:51of some gases
00:55:52which he thought
00:55:54might be utilized
00:55:54in his breathing apparatus.
00:55:56Yeah, that could account
00:55:57for his presence
00:55:57at the oil refineries
00:55:58where something went wrong
00:56:00causing the explosion.
00:56:01Too bad he got wise to us
00:56:03and took off his uniform
00:56:04or we'd have been able
00:56:05to catch up with him by now.
00:56:16No, he didn't utter a word.
00:56:18But I'm convinced
00:56:19he was trying
00:56:19to convey a message to me.
00:56:21He kept tapping out a code.
00:56:23I wrote it down.
00:56:25Let me see that, please.
00:56:28Doesn't make sense.
00:56:30Well, it may be based
00:56:31on some mathematical system
00:56:32we know nothing about.
00:56:34But he was trying
00:56:34to tell us something.
00:56:37Why did he run away?
00:57:02What do you think of that?
00:57:03Well, Hayden must be crazy
00:57:06sending out stuff like that.
00:57:07I guess so.
00:57:08Let's try and get a hold of him.
00:57:10Yeah.
00:57:11Mobile One from Mobile Center.
00:57:13Come in, please.
00:57:14Mobile One from Mobile Center.
00:57:16Come in, please.
00:57:18Mobile One from Mobile Center.
00:57:20Come in, please.
00:57:22Hey, that's Central calling.
00:57:30You better stay here by the car.
00:57:32I'll go tell Hayden.
00:57:37Yes, Colonel Powell.
00:57:38Of course, I'll mail you a complete report
00:57:41first thing in the morning.
00:57:43Yes, sir.
00:57:44Oh, and I'm awfully sorry
00:57:46to disturb you so late at night.
00:57:48Right. Good night, sir.
00:57:51He's around here,
00:57:52this invisible guy.
00:57:52He was in the car.
00:57:54How do you know?
00:57:54Well, I was talking to Randall outside
00:57:56when I heard Central calling.
00:57:58Before I could get over to answer,
00:58:00I saw the door open and shut by itself.
00:58:02He's desperate.
00:58:03For all we know,
00:58:04he could be trying to send a distress signal
00:58:06to his home base,
00:58:07wherever that is.
00:58:08Well, that's hope he doesn't get through.
00:58:09We've got enough problems
00:58:10with just one of those guys.
00:58:12Well, at least we know
00:58:13he's surrounded the vicinity
00:58:14and it's obvious what keeps him around.
00:58:16Of course,
00:58:17he's got to come back
00:58:18for what little gas there is
00:58:19left in his helmet.
00:58:20And when he does.
00:58:22Oh, please.
00:58:22The most important thing
00:58:24is to take him alive.
00:58:25If we can only make each other understand,
00:58:27there's no telling
00:58:28how much science can profit.
00:58:29I'll go along with that, Doctor.
00:58:31But I've got to make sure
00:58:32that once he's cornered,
00:58:34I'll be able to hang on to him.
00:58:35I think we're all agreed on that.
00:58:37All right.
00:58:38Good.
00:58:38Then we must see it from his angle.
00:58:40He's in an alien world.
00:58:41No doubt we are as frightening to him
00:58:43as he is to us.
00:58:44But the most important thing then
00:58:46is to keep calm at all costs
00:58:48and do nothing to provoke him.
00:58:51Immediately,
00:58:51a simple plan to trap the Phantom
00:58:54went into operation.
00:58:55All obstacles to his entry were removed.
00:58:59To erase any possible suspicion,
00:59:01the doors were left unguarded
00:59:03and inconspicuous electric eye equipment
00:59:06was set up.
00:59:08All this was connected
00:59:09to a makeshift control board
00:59:11which would immediately signal
00:59:13the exact location of the trespasser.
00:59:16Now, there was nothing to do but wait.
00:59:20The one road leading to the Institute
00:59:22was blocked off to make certain
00:59:24no outsider would upset the plans
00:59:26or interfere in any way.
00:59:29What's the big idea?
00:59:31Sorry nobody's allowed through here.
00:59:33Who said so?
00:59:34Lieutenant Bowers orders.
00:59:35Oh, is he up there?
00:59:36He might be.
00:59:38Well, you get word to him
00:59:39that Joe Wakeman of the Chronicle is here.
00:59:41Sorry bud, I can't leave.
00:59:42Oh.
00:59:43What about them over there?
00:59:44Hey, you over there.
00:59:46Me?
00:59:47Yeah.
00:59:48Aren't you the guy from the communications outfit?
00:59:50Didn't I see you down at the oil fields
00:59:51a couple of hours ago?
00:59:52What of it?
00:59:54You got anything to do with this?
00:59:55Well, you'll have to ask Lieutenant Bowers about that.
00:59:58How can I if he won't see me?
01:00:01That's a good question.
01:00:19Well, it's quarter to four.
01:00:21Sure taking his time.
01:00:23Time's cheap.
01:00:26Well, how long can you sit on the edge of your chair like this?
01:00:29More there if we have to.
01:00:31I only hope this mechanism works.
01:00:34It will, unless he flies in between the wires.
01:00:36I wouldn't take any buts if he can't.
01:00:39Well, if everything else fails,
01:00:41we still have Venus here to help us.
01:00:44You know, I'm certain she sensed his presence before.
01:00:46That's why she carried on so.
01:00:59What's the matter, Lieutenant? Is this thing getting you?
01:01:02Oh, no, no.
01:01:04I'm just thinking about the public reaction to all this.
01:01:07I'll give something to the press by morning.
01:01:24You know, ever since I was a kid, I wanted to be a pilot.
01:01:27Then after I got my wings and had 75 missions,
01:01:30I thought I'd seen everything.
01:01:32Now, after all this, I know I haven't seen anything.
01:01:36He's here.
01:01:37The back end.
01:01:38Let's cut him off.
01:01:38Come on.
01:01:39Take it easy.
01:01:39One time.
01:02:10Let's modification.
01:02:12This way.
01:02:16It is.
01:02:17It immediately...
01:02:19Fasterly,推er this way.
01:02:29Pull it, don't!
01:02:32Pull it out.
01:02:45Hey, what are you guys trying to do?
01:02:47Well, it's the reporter.
01:02:49Yeah, it sure is.
01:02:50What's going on around here?
01:02:51You guys crazy?
01:03:04How'd you get in here?
01:03:05Oh, that don't make any difference.
01:03:07Come on, what's up?
01:03:07What's going on?
01:03:18All right, Lieutenant, you better tell him.
01:03:20I'll reset the wires.
01:03:39Don't be afraid.
01:03:41We want you to live.
01:03:42Don't you understand?
01:03:44Can't you speak?
01:03:46Can't you say something, anything, in any language?
01:04:00Listen, everybody.
01:04:02He's in the lab with me now.
01:04:05He's in the lab with me now.
01:04:07Venus, be quiet.
01:04:10The door is unlocked.
01:04:12Hurry, he's having trouble breathing.
01:04:15I don't think he can last much longer.
01:04:17And please, don't let Venus get at him.
01:04:21And walk in quietly.
01:04:23Quiet, Venus.
01:04:41You see, there's nothing to be afraid of.
01:04:45Nobody wants to hurt you.
01:04:46I've tried to reason with it.
01:04:48I feel he understands, but he can't speak.
01:04:51Wait a minute.
01:04:52I'll try his code.
01:04:53I think I remember it right.
01:05:07Better plug in the ultraviolet light.
01:05:16Oh, you scared.
01:05:28Look, there will be Venus.
01:05:29Hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry.
01:05:31Hurry, hurry, hurry.
01:05:37Hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry.
01:05:38Hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry.
01:05:38Hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry.

01:05:39Hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry.
01:06:06Look, Ben!
01:06:10He must be there.
01:06:17He's going to the roof.
01:06:38Take this. I'm going after you.
01:06:51The door!
01:06:54In here with a big telescope.
01:07:19Close the door. The switch is over there.
01:07:23I'm going after you.
01:07:31Quiet, Venus.
01:07:32Well, if he's in here, you'll never get out now.
01:07:34Don't tell us.
01:07:35This is what I've been waiting for.
01:07:37Please, Lieutenant. This is our last chance.
01:07:40We have to take him alive.
01:07:42Plug in the lamps. There's an outlet here.
01:07:53He must be up there.
01:08:03I don't know why he's gone.
01:08:08If I hadn't seen this with my own eyes...
01:08:11What do we do now?
01:08:12Stand back.
01:08:28Amazing.
01:08:30It's cold again.
01:08:31Look.
01:08:33He's trying to speak, but no sound is coming out of his mouth.
01:08:36Look at Venus. She acts as though she hears him.
01:08:40Yes.
01:08:42The dog can hear sounds that we can.
01:08:44His voice must be beyond the range of the human ear.
01:08:48Maybe he's screaming.
01:08:52He's suffocating.
01:08:58The glow, it's almost gone.
01:09:00No!
01:09:08No!
01:09:08No!
01:09:20No!
01:09:20No!
01:09:20No!
01:09:22No!
01:09:26We won't need these lights anymore.
01:09:28It's one.
01:09:30In death, the Earth has become visible...
01:09:32...as a normal body.
01:09:49Look.
01:10:19He is evaporating.
01:10:40So he came here, wherever from, and right before our eyes, his body went through the final phases
01:10:51of life.
01:11:09Well, it's morning.
01:11:12Well, it's morning.
01:11:39Well, it's morning.
