00:00A major threat to Keir Starmer from the left wing of British politics.
00:05A win by the Green Party in a key parliamentary by-election, its first ever,
00:09has put the unbattled Prime Minister Keir Starmer under even more pressure.
00:13He's spent much of his premiership eyeing the threat from the right, from Nigel Farage's reform.
00:18But the Green's victory shows that the governing Labour Party risks losing the progressive and left wing vote
00:23over issues such as immigration and Gaza.
00:25Green candidate Hannah Spencer, a local plumber, secured 40.7% of the vote in Gorton and Denton.
00:32That was enough to beat reform and pushed Labour into third place.
00:35In 2024, just 19 months ago, Labour had secured a 37-point majority.
00:41But the result is also a blow to reform, which has sought to present itself as the real opposition in
00:46Parliament.
00:47Nigel Farage said the Green's victory was down to sectarian voting and alleged cheating.
00:51The next major electoral test for Keir Starmer will come on May 7th, when local elections take place across the
00:57UK.
00:58But this result from Manchester has underscored Labour's vulnerability on its other, perhaps neglected, left flank.
