00:00In a gigantic white desert up in the Arctic, there's a guy in a red coat who's alone
00:05digging in the frozen snow.
00:07His name is Overguard, and we can see that this pilot is the only survivor around there.
00:12As soon as he finishes digging, it becomes clear that he was making giant letters in
00:16the snow, forming the distress message SOS.
00:20This shows that the guy crashed his plane in the middle of the ice and is waiting for
00:24someone to show up to rescue him.
00:26You can see that the plane hit hard because the engine and wings were completely destroyed
00:31in the impact.
00:33It's been several days since he's been trapped in this frozen place, and Overguard
00:37does everything he can to survive while waiting for help to arrive.
00:41To be able to feed himself, the pilot created a basic fishing system.
00:45He dug some holes in a frozen lake and tied ropes with bait to wooden sticks.
00:51With this method, he catches fish throughout the entire day and has already gathered several
00:56fish stored in a kind of natural freezer made in the snow.
00:59Right after feeding himself again, Overguard gathers his belongings and climbs a high hill
01:05to observe the horizon, hoping to spot some search aircraft.
01:09As the days went by, he made a manual map of the area and doesn't stop sending emergency
01:14calls using a rescue device.
01:16The device works with a crank that you turn, and when it's transmitting, a red light appears
01:21lit.
01:22If any station receives the signal, a green light will turn on.
01:26Since the day of the crash, Overguard spends hours and hours turning this crank.
01:30But nobody has responded yet.
01:32When night approaches, the temperature drops brutally, and the pilot needs to take refuge
01:37in the wrecked plane to try to rest and recover energy to face another day.
01:41On the morning of the next day, Overguard goes back to digging the SOS letters again.
01:47But before starting, he walks to a pile of dark rocks that's close to the slope.
01:52In this place, he makes a kind of silent farewell, suggesting that that pile of stones serves
01:57as an improvised tomb for someone who was on the plane and didn't survive the accident.
02:02Right after this tribute, he resumes the work of digging, removing each stone and block
02:07of ice he finds, to keep the SOS letters clearly visible.
02:11The objective is to make the message big enough so that any pilot flying overhead can identify
02:16it.
02:17Next, Overguard goes to the fishing rods and notices that no hook caught anything.
02:22And there's something even worse.
02:23He notices a gigantic mark in the snow near one of the holes, which is clearly from some
02:29dangerous creature.
02:30Hey, what would you do if your plane crashed in the middle of the Arctic and you had to survive
02:35alone in all that ice?
02:37The movie I'm going to recap is called Arctic.
02:40It's an Icelandic film that mixes drama and adventure.
02:44It's one of the most intense survival films I've ever seen.
02:48That's why I invite you to subscribe to the channel, activate the bell, and leave a like
02:53to receive the best recaps.
02:56Suspecting it's a polar bear, the pilot runs back to the plane's fuselage and locks himself
03:01inside until he confirms there's no threat nearby.
03:03After making sure he's safe, Overguard climbs the hill again and activates the distress
03:09transmitter, anxiously waiting for the green light to turn on.
03:13But the result is the same as always, and the pilot decides to scan the surroundings with
03:18his gaze.
03:19As he imagined, a huge polar bear appears in the distance, hunting for food.
03:24With no alternative, the pilot returns inside the plane and tries to sleep before repeating
03:29the whole routine the next day.
03:31However, no rescue team appears, and the fish reserves slowly decrease.
03:36The only way is to persist sending emergency signals.
03:40But after spending hours on the crank, Overguard was almost losing hope.
03:45That's when, without warning, the equipment lights up the green light signaling that they
03:50caught his call.
03:51The pilot runs to find out where the confirmation came from, and when he looks in the direction
03:56of the sky, he spots a helicopter flying over the region.
04:00Without wasting time, Overguard gets closer to the helicopter and lights an orange smoke signal
04:06to make it easier to locate.
04:08For a moment it seems to have worked when the helicopter identifies the survivor and starts
04:13to descend, but a violent gust of wind completely destabilizes the aircraft, and the pilot is
04:19forced to try to move away.
04:21To make the situation even worse, the helicopter continues losing altitude uncontrollably, and
04:27the pilot has no choice but to make a forced landing, violently crashing against the snowy
04:33ground.
04:34After the crash, Overguard runs to the location, and upon opening the helicopter door, discovers
04:40the pilot lifeless due to severe injuries caused by the impact.
04:44Soon after, he locates a second crew member who's still breathing, however with a deep
04:49cut and bleeding heavily in the abdomen region.
04:52Overguard quickly grabs the first aid kit that was inside the aircraft, and using a surgical
04:57stapler, he closes the crew member's wound with precision.
05:01By doing this, he stops the hemorrhage, but the snowstorm starts to get increasingly intense,
05:07making it impossible to return to the plane.
05:09The only option is to wait inside the helicopter itself, until the storm passes.
05:15A few hours pass, and the weather improves with Overguard checking the survivor's condition,
05:20and examining the supplies in the aircraft.
05:22Along with ropes, he discovers an ice axe for mountaineering, and several packages of instant
05:28noodles.
05:29After so many days eating only raw fish, the pilot doesn't hesitate to try to heat water
05:35to prepare it, and devours the noodles immediately, but he can't stay long and needs to return
05:40to the plane before the next storm arrives.
05:43Unfortunately, the helicopter pilot died in the accident, but Overguard is determined to
05:48transport the crew member to take care of her injuries.
05:51After gathering the maximum equipment he can carry, Overguard leaves a written message on
05:57the helicopter wall.
05:58The message informs that two survivors are heading to the valley where his plane crashed,
06:03hoping that someone will see the note and come get them.
06:06Then, Overguard starts the walk back, transporting the crew member with him to the plane.
06:11When they get there, he tries to ask what her name is, but the woman doesn't understand
06:16his language very well, and only repeats the word pilot, trying to know what happened to
06:21her companion in the helicopter.
06:23But Overguard communicates to her that the pilot didn't make it, and asks her to wait
06:28in the plane while he goes to do another check on the helicopter.
06:31When the woman falls asleep, the pilot goes back to the accident site, and finds her companion's
06:37body completely buried under the snow.
06:39Doing the same as before, Overguard digs a hole in the snow and piles rocks on top as
06:45a demonstration of respect.
06:47Then he starts investigating what's left inside the helicopter, and discovers a more
06:51detailed map and a lighter, along with a small gas cylinder, and a support that assembles
06:57a portable improvised stove.
06:59At this moment, he finds a photograph that touches his feelings and keeps it in his jacket
07:03pocket.
07:04The search continues, and to his happiness, Overguard finds a real sled in the trunk.
07:09He takes the opportunity to load all the remaining equipment.
07:13Upon returning to the plane, he positions the photograph he took from the helicopter very
07:18close to the survivor.
07:19Then it's revealed that in the image there was a complete family, showing that she and
07:24the dead pilot were husband and wife, and had a small child.
07:27The woman, however, remains in deep sleep, and Overguard applies medicine to sanitize her
07:33wound.
07:34Then he lights the portable stove to generate heat, and studies the map carefully, observing
07:39more precise information about the region they're in.
07:42While making notes with a pen, Overguard notices that the wind is increasing, and goes to check if he managed
07:48to catch anything else.
07:50He gets excited when he pulls one of the ropes, and sees that he finally hooked a fish with enough
07:55size to serve as a meal for both survivors.
07:58The guy then cooks a soup, mixing the fish meat with instant noodles.
08:03Even though it's not amazing food, it's decent enough food to sustain them for another day.
08:09When the soup is ready, he wakes the woman and offers her some food so she can get her energy
08:13back.
08:14But her husband's death left her completely dejected, and without appetite.
08:18But Overguard doesn't give up, and insists that she eat, and promises that everything will be okay.
08:24Several days pass, and Overguard continues transmitting calls through the rescue device.
08:29However, like before, no response signal appears, and he starts to question how he's going to manage to save the
08:36surviving woman.
08:37She seems to be deteriorate, coughing constantly during the nights.
08:40In the morning that comes, Overguard doesn't take his eyes off her, and suddenly, the survivor holds his hand in
08:47a gesture of gratitude for everything he's done so far.
08:51This leaves him with even more determination to find a solution, and he examines the map again.
08:56The journey to the nearest village will take several days, but there's a shorter path through the mountains that can
09:02significantly reduce the time.
09:04Deciding to risk it in the middle of that frozen desert, Overguard prepares more ropes and hooks to fish,
09:10stocking as much reserve as he can.
09:12Then he organizes all the equipment on the sled, along with the surviving woman who remains sleeping.
09:18To protect her from the extreme temperatures, the pilot wraps her in a thick sleeping bag, and leaves one last
09:25written note on the plane.
09:27The note says that the two are departing south towards the village, and need help.
09:31Finally, Overguard ties a rope to the sled, supports it on his shoulders, and starts pulling, heading towards the frozen
09:39immensity.
09:40But when consulting the map more carefully, the man discovers that the correct direction is actually north.
09:46So, Overguard returns to the plane, adjusts the message, and departs north, advancing through the deep snow.
09:53After walking a lot, he checks the map again, and notices he's still extremely distant from the final destination.
09:59Still, the pilot doesn't consider giving up, and offers the woman a sip of water.
10:04More hours pass, and the two survivors completed the second stage of the journey, but darkness is approaching.
10:11Because of this, Overguard starts to dig in the snow, building an improvised cave so they can shelter a bit.
10:17He maintains the woman's feeding and hydration, and both fall asleep, hoping that no polar bear appears in the vicinity.
10:24Day breaks once more, and Overguard dresses with extra layers of clothes and a mask, because another brutal storm is
10:31coming.
10:32During the route, he stumbles on a piece of equipment buried in the snow, and imagines it's from some other
10:38survivor.
10:38But when he examines it closely, the pilot realizes that this was his own equipment abandoned days ago, when he
10:44tried to cross the Arctic alone for the first time.
10:47Inside a box, he locates his old identification card, revealing that the pilot belonged to EA.
10:54This is an experimental aircraft organization, where members assemble, restore, and pilot different models of aircraft.
11:01It's very likely that Overguard took a risk in one of the experimental planes, but the aircraft didn't withstand the
11:08Arctic's severe weather conditions and ended up crashing.
11:11But there's no use lamenting now, and Overguard proceeds, wishing to reach the destination as soon as possible.
11:18The walk continues, until the pilot encounters a gigantic mountain that wasn't on the map.
11:23Even with this obstacle, Overguard uses the ice axe he took from the helicopter, climbs the mountain, and locates a
11:30relatively flat passage to the other side.
11:32He then raises the equipment using a rope, and then tries to do the same with the surviving woman, pulling
11:38her inside the sled.
11:39But executing this proves to be much more complicated than he calculated, and no matter how much he struggles, the
11:46weight is excessive for him to bear.
11:48Because of this, the rope slips from his hands, and the sled begins to fall.
11:53In a desperate attempt, Overguard pulls with all the energy he has, but the sled ends up descending to the
12:00lowest point of the slope.
12:02Recognizing that he won't succeed in hoisting it to the top, the pilot has no option but to abandon this
12:08path and go around the mountain, considerably increasing the route.
12:12Overguard then restarts the journey, but needs to take another break to recover his breath and eat.
12:18He locates a cave below the rock formations, with the entrance blocked by snow, but using his tools, he digs
12:25and opens the passage.
12:27Inside, he uses the gas cylinder to cook the remaining fish, and tries to feed the woman despite her condition.
12:34With night settling in, the only alternative for the two is to sleep.
12:38But Overguard notices something moving outside. He sharpens his hearing, and to his despair, he hears the growling of a
12:45wild beast accompanied by heavy breathing.
12:48With extreme care, the pilot stands up and wields his ice axe, prepared for the worst.
12:54Moments later, silence returns, and Overguard believes the creature gave up and left.
13:00To his bad luck, the woman ends up coughing at that exact moment, and this catches the attention of the
13:06giant polar bear, who starts to roar more aggressively.
13:10The beast tries to force entry into the cave, but the opening is too narrow for it to cross.
13:15Even so, the bear persists in entering, using its paw to dig the snow and pushing its head through the
13:22gap.
13:22To prevent it from advancing further, Overguard starts to scream loudly at it, and lights a flare, waving it in
13:29the air to scare the beast.
13:31His strategy works, and the bear gets scared by the flames, fleeing and abandoning the two survivors in the cave.
13:38Despite his bravery, as soon as the predator leaves, Overguard collapses on the ground exhausted and in a state of
13:45shock, repeating to himself that everything will be okay.
13:49Another day passes, and the pilot exits the cave to verify, and luckily there's no trace of the polar bear
13:55anywhere.
13:55But the location isn't safe, and if the bear returns, the two survivors might not have the same luck as
14:00last night.
14:01So, with the woman on the sled, Overguard continues pulling her, walking a few more meters on the path that
14:07seems infinite.
14:08To complicate things even more, a violent snowstorm starts to take over the entire area, impairing the pilot's visibility and
14:15forcing him to stop.
14:16This time, there's no cave nearby where he can protect himself, and continuing to walk will only exhaust him completely.
14:23The only alternative is to get in the sleeping bag together with the woman, and share the reduced space to
14:29generate heat.
14:30In the middle of this critical situation, the hours drag slowly until everything returns to normal, and the two survivors
14:37are buried by the snow.
14:39Overguard then exits the sleeping bag, and goes to check if the equipment suffered any damage from the snowstorm.
14:45Among the items, the pilot finds the water bottle, but it's completely frozen.
14:50The solution is to take advantage of his own body temperature to thaw the water.
14:54So, Overguard puts the bottle inside his jacket.
14:57After that, the pilot fixes the sled for another extensive journey, until reaching a trail with extremely soft snow, making
15:04locomotion very difficult.
15:06The fatigue only grows, and he needs to make another stop near a rocky hill.
15:11As soon as they light a small fire to warm themselves, Overguard requests that the survivor squeeze his fingers, so
15:18they can generate heat between themselves, and maintain blood circulation.
15:23The woman, however, remains unconscious, and is breathing with difficulty, indicating she's becoming increasingly ill.
15:30Overguard's suspicions are confirmed when he goes to examine the wound on her body, and observes that it's becoming more
15:36infected with each passing day.
15:38He also notices blood dripping from her mouth, and fears the woman doesn't have much time left.
15:44Despite being hesitant, Overguard makes the decision to leave her there and continue the journey alone, because he understands that
15:51in these conditions, the two won't survive.
15:54So, carrying only the essential equipment with him, the pilot tries to continue the route when he spots a rock
16:00formation covered with flowers in the middle of the snow.
16:03Overguard is surprised by this vision, but when he tries to get closer, the ground beneath him gives way, and
16:10he falls into a hole.
16:11Minutes later, the pilot regains consciousness in a grotto with his right leg trapped in a rock because of the
16:17freezing temperature.
16:18Overguard makes every possible effort to free it, but the effort is in vain, and he can't move.
16:24After so much struggle, it seems his destiny is to die alone in the middle of the Arctic.
16:30But Overguard doesn't allow this thought to take over his mind, and mobilizing the strength that still remains, he does
16:36everything within reach to free himself.
16:39Despite the excruciating pain, he continues forcing until his leg is freed from the snow, leaving him with a serious
16:45injury.
16:46Now he needs to crawl through the snow and rocks, but soon discovers an exit from the grotto.
16:51Even having solved this problem, the pain from the injury only makes things even more difficult, and he can barely
16:58remain standing.
16:59He then returns to the place where he abandoned the survivor, and takes the photograph of her family so he
17:04can deliver it to the sun when he finds him.
17:07But he's shocked to discover that the woman is still alive, and she talks to him seeming a bit better.
17:12Overguard immediately regrets having considered abandoning her for an instant, and cries in front of her, asking forgiveness for what
17:20he did.
17:20Finally, the pilot states that everything will be okay, and pulls the sled, determined to continue the journey despite his
17:28condition.
17:28Before resuming, he examines the injury, and it's much more serious than he imagined.
17:33Without resources to treat the injury, Overguard improvises and applies ice on the cut, along with a piece of cloth
17:40to contain the bleeding.
17:41Finally, he continues dragging the sled with the survivor, needing to ignore the pain and fatigue to continue.
17:47At a certain moment, he offers the woman the last drops of water, fills the bottle with snow, and swallows
17:53a bit to kill his unbearable thirst.
17:56Then, Overguard checks the map, and realizes there's still a long way ahead before reaching the destination.
18:03The fatigue increasingly dominates his body, and everything gets worse when he reaches a higher part of the route.
18:10He tries to climb using a metal bar as support, but the injury on his leg makes everything difficult.
18:16Finally, he has no choice, and checks if the rescue device is still working, but it was damaged by the
18:22snowstorm.
18:22Without this resource, Overguard crawls to the top of the hill to see if he can spot something or someone
18:29nearby.
18:30When he reaches there, he spots a helicopter in the distance that just landed in the vicinity.
18:35Without hesitating, Overguard returns to the sled, pushing with the energy left in him.
18:40Reaching the top, he screams as loud as his voice allows, asking for help.
18:44But his voice is weakened, and the pilot can barely emit sound.
18:48All he needs to do is light the last flare he still has, and he waves his arms, hoping someone
18:54notices him.
18:55But the crew in the helicopter doesn't notice him, so Overguard makes one last desperate attempt.
19:01He sets fire to the flare on his jacket, and using a piece of metal, swings it in the air.
19:06Unfortunately, none of this has any effect, and the crew returns to the helicopter, starting takeoff away from that place.
19:13All hope seems to disappear, and Overguard lifts the surviving woman, begging for the helicopter team to see them.
19:21He just wishes the team could rescue her, but the aircraft is already distant, and any possibility of survival seems
19:27to have been lost forever.
19:29Despite this, Overguard places the woman back on the sled, and promises he won't abandon her.
19:35With the two lying in the snow, the pilot tells her and himself that everything will be okay before fainting
19:41from exhaustion.
19:42When the two lost consciousness, a strong gust started to blow everything around.
19:48Then the same aircraft lands right in front of them, revealing that the duo was finally rescued.
19:54Even facing all adversities, Overguard exceeded the limits of physical and mental effort before giving up.
20:02More than ensuring his own survival, the pilot managed to overcome nature's force, because above all, he was fighting to
20:09save someone.
20:09And that's how the movie ends. What score do you give this movie?
20:13It's a movie that shows true human willpower.
20:16Don't forget to activate the bell to be notified of new recaps.
20:20So see you next time.
