A watchdog has ordered improvements across Durham Police’s integrity systems. The force says underinvestment and outdated information technology led to delays but reforms are now under way.

00:01Durham Police has been rated inadequate for vetting and counter corruption by His Majesty's
00:06Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services. Inspectors said the findings were
00:12disappointing and warned some people could receive clearance who were not suitable to work in
00:17policing. The report found hundreds of applications not yet started and dozens of staff without the
00:24correct level of vetting as of the 14th of July last year. Monitoring of IT systems and corruption
00:30intelligence was also judged inadequate. Chief Constable Rachel Bacon said long-term
00:36underinvestment and outdated systems cause delays but decisive action is underway including extra
00:42staff and technology.
