00:01In Parramatta Children's Court today, the lawyer for the Wakely attacker, who was 16
00:08at the time of that attack but is 18 now, told the court that he had received two diagnoses
00:14of schizophrenia and was seeking an assessment of whether he was psychotic, whether he was
00:21having a psychotic episode at the time of that attack.
00:24Now, viewers might remember back in April 2024, he stormed into a church service in the
00:32Sydney suburb of Wakely and stabbed a bishop in the face during a live streamed service.
00:39That bishop lost an eye in the attack.
00:42The boy has been charged with a terrorism offence as well as attempted murder and police alleged
00:49he was part of a terrorist network with a number of teenagers, several of whom also faced
00:56court today, accused of planning another terrorist attack as well as involvement in horrific pack
01:03gay bashings, videos of which we revealed earlier this week.
01:07This revelation of schizophrenia diagnosis comes almost two years after we revealed that there
01:16were long-standing mental health concerns around this teenager.
01:20His parents spoke to us on the 7.30 program not long after the attack and revealed that
01:26they had been struggling for a long time with his anger management and behavioural issues and
01:31had long suspected mental health concerns.
01:35As part of our investigation we revealed that authorities missed a number of red flags in the lead-up
01:41to the Wakely attack.
01:42He had been arrested about six months earlier with a teenager on a de-radicalisation program,
01:48a government de-radicalisation program, who had a father who was jailed for fighting overseas
01:54with a jihadist group.
01:56Now they were arrested over a knife attack just six months before this stabbing, but he wasn't
02:02put on the counter-terrorism radar.
02:05He wasn't offered any de-radicalisation program himself.
02:09In addition to that, he was known to be associating with an alleged ISIS recruiter and a former
02:17undercover agent told us he'd been warning ASIO for nearly two years before that attack that
02:24extremists in the ISIS network were calling for an attack on this bishop.
02:28So this exposed questions around potential intelligence failures and the resurgence of ISIS before the
02:38Bondi attack.
02:39That's no question.
02:39Ah, father course.
02:40But as many as well, it doesn't tell on that interview.
