00:02:39I'll come in and do it for you.
00:02:40Sous-titrage MFP.
00:02:59Hello, Pete.
00:03:00Glad you're here.
00:03:01We're ready to move the body.
00:03:03What time did it happen?
00:03:04About three o'clock.
00:03:05Multiple stab wounds in the back.
00:03:07Here, take a look.
00:03:09Weapon was a long, sharp, twin-bladed object.
00:03:11Scissors of some kind.
00:03:13Remind you of anything?
00:03:14Body of the waitress, body of the waitress we found about a month ago.
00:03:16Body of the waitress we found about a month ago.
00:03:43manager didn't see anyone else.
00:03:45He's outside when you want to talk to him.
00:03:47Okay.
00:03:48What about the fingerprints?
00:03:49They're all over the place.
00:03:50He's just finishing up now.
00:03:51Fine.
00:03:52As soon as they're processed, we'll check the file.
00:03:54Anything else?
00:03:55The usual.
00:03:56Burnt matches, a few cigarettes.
00:03:57His or hers?
00:03:58Hers, unless they both want lipstick.
00:04:01Also, I found some stuff under her nails.
00:04:03And here's something else.
00:04:05What is it?
00:04:06Looks like a piece of suit fabric.
00:04:08Blue serge.
00:04:09Get it down to the lab.
00:04:10And tell Charlie we'll drop by as soon as we can, all right?
00:04:12Right.
00:04:13Where's the girl's husband?
00:04:14We're trying to find him.
00:04:16Fine.
00:04:16Now, we'd better send out a call to pick up every 288 and 311 we can lay our hands on.
00:04:22Let's go see the manager, yeah?
00:04:52Let's go see the manager.
00:05:02Let's go.
00:05:36Let's go.
00:05:37Let's go.
00:05:40Let's go.
00:05:52Let's go.
00:06:24He'd been working all night and hadn't even known his wife was on the loose.
00:06:29Police details moved throughout the city.
00:06:32They picked up any man who had ever been connected with a crime similar to the murder in the motel.
00:06:37The suspects were taken to the identification room.
00:06:40They were booked, printed, and mugged.
00:06:43It was a mixed assortment of the mild and the defiant.
00:06:48That was the routine, and it went on all night.
00:06:53Meanwhile, in homicide, they went after the case from another angle.
00:06:59That's the way I see it.
00:07:00The victim was attacked from the back and stabbed repeatedly in the body with a twin-bladed object like that.
00:07:07That's the same man, all right.
00:07:09Are you sure about the type of weapon?
00:07:11Sure, I'm sure. I'll show you.
00:07:15Here are the photographs we took last night.
00:07:17Notice the position and frequency of the wounds.
00:07:20And here are the ones we took of that waitress a month ago.
00:07:23The wounds are identical.
00:07:24In each case, they were made by a thick kind of scissors, about five inches long.
00:07:28At least he's consistent.
00:07:30Anything else, Doc?
00:07:31Just what you already know.
00:07:32Both victims were blonde and had alcohol in their systems.
00:07:36Don, let's have a couple of dozen photographs of the Johnson woman made up right away.
00:07:41And see how many men Brownie can lend us to canvas the bars.
00:07:45If they show the pictures to enough bartenders, one of them ought to come up with a lead.
00:07:49Right, I'll see you back here.
00:07:50Now, you better make it to the lab. I want to talk to Charlie.
00:07:52Charlie. If you get any ideas on the type of scissors, Doc, let me know.
00:07:57I'll do that, please.
00:08:03Of course, a square inch of fabric isn't much to go on.
00:08:06But it may tell us a few things.
00:08:09Manufacturer?
00:08:10Possibly.
00:08:11We can trace the mill, it may the material.
00:08:15What makes you so positive it's from the killer's suit in the first place?
00:08:19I'm not positive, but we have to start somewhere.
00:08:21We tried to check everybody that was registered in the motel room in the past week.
00:08:25And?
00:08:27And what do you think?
00:08:28Seventy-five percent of the names were phony.
00:08:30Well, that's par for a motel.
00:08:32You wouldn't say you were playing a long shot, would you?
00:08:35What do you want me to do?
00:08:36Assign a man to every motel in town just to be sure that the guests sign their right names?
00:08:40Relax.
00:08:41You'll put them all out of business.
00:08:43Okay, okay.
00:08:45Where'd you find?
00:08:46It's from his suit, all right.
00:08:48The threads match the traces of wool lint found under the dead girl's fingernails.
00:08:52She must have put up a pretty good fight.
00:08:55Take a look.
00:08:56Hi.
00:08:58Now, the main thing is the number of horizontal strands to the weave.
00:09:01I'd say about 80 to the inch and 100 fibers to the strand.
00:09:05For Serge, that's pretty good.
00:09:08I just saw Brownie.
00:09:09It's all set.
00:09:10How many men is he going to let us have?
00:09:11Eight tomorrow, more later, if we need them.
00:09:13We'll need them, all right.
00:09:15About this material, how much would you say it cost?
00:09:18Well, it isn't cheap.
00:09:20Couldn't touch a suit like that for under 90 or 100 dollars.
00:09:23Anything else?
00:09:24Yeah, it's quite new.
00:09:26Very resilient.
00:09:28The fibers have all the bounce of a new handball.
00:09:31Another thing.
00:09:32There are no signs of cleaning fluid.
00:09:34All right, so the suit's new.
00:09:36It'll take months to track down everybody
00:09:38who's bought a blue serge suit recently.
00:09:40Would you like to borrow my microscope?
00:09:42If you had a brand new hundred dollar suit
00:09:44with a small tear in it, what would you do?
00:09:46Give it to the Salvation Army?
00:09:48No, I'd take it to one of those French weaving places.
00:09:52Don.
00:09:54Coffee?
00:09:55Don?
00:09:58Will you have a bulletin sent out to every shop in town
00:10:00that does mending and weaving?
00:10:02Warn them to be on the lookout for a blue serge suit
00:10:05with a tear in it.
00:10:06I'll take care of it right away.
00:10:35I'll take care of it right away.
00:10:51I'll take care of it right away.
00:10:52I'll take care of it right away.
00:10:55I'll些 Grimlade.
00:10:55I'll then take care of it my profile.
00:10:56I'll take care of it.
00:10:56I'll take care of it from the end of the day today.
00:11:04All right.

00:34:374th and Hamilton.
00:35:1722K roger, KMA 367.
00:35:28About 30, 6 feet tall, 175 pounds, gray flannel suit, no hat.
00:35:35Sorry, Pete, but that's the best I could do.
00:35:37I never really got a good look at him.
00:35:39You said his behavior seemed normal.
00:35:43Well, it did at the time, but I...
00:35:44Okay, we'll call you when we need you at the lineup.
00:35:49I got the report on the fingerprints.
00:35:51Yeah?
00:35:52It's our man, all right.
00:35:54How you doing, Sam?
00:35:54Okay, there's his right foot.
00:35:56Let's have a look at it.
00:35:57Got a good left foot, too.
00:35:59We'll check him with Charlie.
00:36:01We're finished here.
00:36:0215, 76, 77.
00:36:26Mr. Martin.
00:36:30Mr. Martin.
00:36:33Mr. Martin.
00:36:39Can I fix it for you later, honey?
00:36:41Don't forget.
00:36:55He wears a nine and a half feet shoe.
00:36:57Same size I wear.
00:36:59Well, here's something a little more interesting.
00:37:01These are the cigarette butts found at the motel murder site a month ago.
00:37:05And these are the ones found in and around the car this morning.
00:37:09Now, do you notice anything peculiar?
00:37:11They all have lipstick markings, and there are about twice as many short ones as long ones.
00:37:15That's right.
00:37:17Take a look.
00:37:19Notice the lipstick on the long one to your right.
00:37:22It's uneven and spread pretty thin.
00:37:26Now, look at the short one.
00:37:28It's almost twice as thick.
00:37:32In each case, the murdered woman smoked the short one,
00:37:34but she licked a long one in her own mouth and then passed it over to him.
00:37:39Excuse me.
00:37:43Hello, Wilkins speaking.
00:37:46Pete? Yeah, he's here.
00:37:50Okay, I'll tell him.
00:37:53They want you down at the Central Produce Market.
00:37:55They have a guy who thinks he saw your man.
00:37:57Let's go, Don.
00:38:05In the turmoil and confusion of the market, the killer's flight had gone unnoticed.
00:38:10Except for one man who thought he'd seen him cross the street and hail the taxi.
00:38:17Detectives then checked every cab office in the city.
00:38:20At each one, they received the same reply.
00:38:22No fare picked up in that area.
00:38:25For all his carelessness, the killer had been swallowed up in the trackless jungle of the city.
00:38:32And out of that jungle, as the notoriety increased, came the creatures.
00:38:38Strange, forgotten souls.
00:38:40Eager to confess to crimes they did not commit.
00:38:43In their desire to bask briefly in the spotlight of the headlines, they were willing to admit to anything.
00:38:51Each day brought new confessions and still more versions of how the crime had been committed.
00:39:06And so the admissions of guilt continued.
00:39:09Every cop on the beat had at least one habitual, whom he could count on to confess to any and
00:39:14every crime.
00:39:15It was time-taking, discouraging work.
00:39:18But every story had to be checked.
00:39:20Every letter and phone call investigated.
00:39:23There was always the chance that this one might be it.
00:39:28The only one who enjoyed it was the killer.
00:39:33It became evident they needed more than a physical description to pin him down.
00:39:37They had to get inside his brain to see what made him tick.
00:39:41To try and determine in advance what his moves would be, they consulted Dr. Werner, the police psychiatrist, authority on
00:39:48the criminal mind.
00:39:51Well, I'll say that homicidal maniacs fall pretty much into three categories.
00:39:57There's the sadistic psychopath, the epileptic equivalent, and the paranoic.
00:40:04Now let's consider the sadistic psychopath first.
00:40:08Now you'll recall, no doubt, that the wounds inflicted on all three parties were pretty much alike.
00:40:16According to the coroner's reports, any one of these wounds might have caused death immediately.
00:40:22There was no real attempt to torture.
00:40:25So I think we can forget about sadistic psychopaths.
00:40:29Good enough.
00:40:31Then let's consider the epileptic equivalent.
00:40:34He kills in frenzied pits and seizures at unpredictable times.
00:40:40His methods are varied and irregular.
00:40:44Now, according to the motorcycle officer who saw him, your man was perfectly calm.
00:40:49And the records indicate a possible time pattern in his attacks and regularity in his methods.
00:40:55Which leaves us the paranoic.
00:40:57And I think he's the man you're after.
00:41:01Now, to illustrate my point, let's take a brief case history.
00:41:05Well, I won't say it's his, but it might be.
00:41:09A boy who is emotionally too weak.
00:41:13Maybe without parents or friends or family.
00:41:18He's lost nobody to hold on to.
00:41:22But he finally finds a wife or a girl and becomes entirely dependent on her.
00:41:28Well, she turns out to be no good.
00:41:30Now, he still clings to her.
00:41:32But then one day she runs off with another man who shows her a good time.
00:41:37And the boy is desperate because he finds himself lost again.
00:41:42He suffers a tremendous shock.
00:41:44And that does it.
00:41:47His world collapses and he has to get even.
00:41:51The balance of his mind tips so that his emotions are transferred to a pathological desire for revenge on the
00:41:58girl or her prototype.
00:42:01Blondes, under 30, about the same height and weight.
00:42:04And he'll keep on killing the same type of girl until you catch him.
00:42:10And so they had a little more to work with.
00:42:13Especially when the psychiatrist's information dovetailed with their first real break.
00:42:18A Glendale cabbie remembered picking up a fare at the produce market on the morning of the murder.
00:42:23He'd been afraid to talk before.
00:42:25There's a local ordinance that prohibits out of town cabs from picking up a fare inside city limits.
00:42:31Lieutenant Hamilton?
00:42:32Yeah, that's right. That's me.
00:42:33My name is Jackson. I'm with a rapid transit care company.
00:42:36That's Sargent Ward.
00:42:37Glad to know you, Sargent.
00:42:38I've got some information for you fellas, but it's got to be off the record.
00:42:41It's got to be off the record. Forget it.
00:42:42It's about this crazy killer you guys are after.
00:42:46Sit down.
00:42:47Thank you.
00:42:48I'm at the produce market one day on my regular beat and I'm picking up a guy, see?
00:42:52It's a funny thing about this guy.
00:42:54I drop him off at the Union Station. I'm pulling up for a stoplight at the corner.
00:42:58I'm lighting up a cigarette and I take a look behind me and I see this guy making a beeline.
00:43:02for a different cab.
00:43:03What kind of a cab?
00:43:04A yellow.
00:43:06Yellow.
00:43:06You sure?
00:43:07Yeah.
00:43:14Here it is. I knew we'd have it somewhere. Cab number 803. Picked up a fare at 605 at Union
00:43:19Station. Drove him to 4th and Hamilton.
00:43:20Thanks.
00:43:22Sure.
00:43:25Let me see.
00:43:28She does look a little familiar.
00:43:30But I see so many faces it's hard for me to think.
00:43:33Try and think.
00:43:34I am trying.
00:43:37Yeah.
00:43:38I remember now.
00:43:40There was a dame in here that looked like that.
00:43:43Only a little blunder, I think.
00:43:46She was in here for a couple of hours.
00:43:49Gave some guy the come on and left.
00:43:53It was pretty late, I think.
00:43:55And he went out after her.
00:43:56What kind of a guy?
00:43:58What did he look like?
00:43:59Oh, just an average sort of guy, I guess.
00:44:02After all, it's been about a month and a lot of other guys have been in here since.
00:44:06Don't you remember anything about him? His suit, maybe?
00:44:09Yeah.
00:44:10It was dark brown.
00:44:13No.
00:44:14Kind of a blue.
00:44:16I think.
00:44:19Thanks.
00:44:21Or was it, uh...
00:44:28So from now till the end of the operation, you're all assigned to us for special duty.
00:44:32Each of you has been chosen because of a close resemblance to the type of woman this man is likely
00:44:37to go for.
00:44:37It's your job to see that he does go for you.
00:44:40We've been able to figure his range of operations to an area within a radius of 15 miles.
00:44:44We've also classified the bars where he's likely to pick up his next victim.
00:44:49He's expected to strike in the next few days.
00:44:51Now for procedure.
00:44:53A plainclothesman will be detailed to each of you.
00:44:56You will never be out of his sight.
00:44:58You've just been given a good general description of the criminal on those cards.
00:45:02Don't waste time on anybody who doesn't match.
00:45:05When you have what appears to be a suspect, play him along until he makes a definite move.
00:45:10Then signal your detective to make the arrest.
00:45:13What would you call a definite move?
00:45:15Well, you'll have to decide that for yourself.
00:45:17We won't have the time of the men to pull in everybody who makes a friendly pass.
00:45:22On the other hand, always remember that you may be dealing with a homicidal maniac.
00:45:26The criminal seems to have a habit of letting the woman light a cigarette for him in her own mouth.
00:45:32Watch for that.
00:45:33Now, Don will give you your definite assignments.
00:45:35Well, Betty, you're first. You go with Sergeant Lewis.
00:45:39And Ginny, I'm gonna tag along after you.
00:45:44Get down with somebody.
00:46:01I hope you're getting ready.
00:46:02That's the best idea.
00:46:10I like the beach when it isn't so crowded.
00:46:12Let's go.
00:46:14Here we go.
