Nearly 8,000 migrants died or vanished on routes worldwide in 2025

At least 7,667 people died or went missing on migration routes globally in 2025, the UN migration agency reported Thursday, warning the true toll is likely higher and calling the ongoing losses a "global failure."

00:00Nearly 8,000 people died or went missing on migration routes worldwide last year,
00:05but the true toll is likely far higher, the UN Migration Agency reported Thursday.
00:11The International Organization for Migration recorded at least 7,667 deaths in 2025,
00:19down from 9,200 the previous year.
00:22But IOM Director General Amy Popp called the numbers a reflection of the global scale of the crisis.
00:30At least 2,108 people went missing trying to cross the Mediterranean,
00:35and another 1,047 died or vanished en route to Spain's Canary Islands.
00:42The agency warns that 2026 has already seen an unprecedented number of Mediterranean deaths,
