Can you believe this popular Perth dog beach is fighting back against climate change?

Discover how Western Australia's first engineered artificial reef is transforming C.Y. O'Connor Beach. This innovative 100m structure is built from 135 concrete modules, designed to break waves and protect the coastline from erosion.

Early results are in, and they're impressive! Researchers have already observed a significant 20% reduction in wave energy. Plus, the new reef has become a thriving marine habitat, with fish species jumping from 29 to an incredible 57.

It's not just for marine life anymore – locals are already enjoying this fantastic new snorkeling spot. We even spotted a seal! This trial is showing promising results for coastal protection and new eco-tourism opportunities.

00:00This popular Perth Dog Beach has been struggling with sand erosion for decades, made worse
00:04by climate change and rising sea levels.
00:06To help protect the coastline, the local council installed Western Australia's first engineered
00:11artificial reef, a 100m long structure just offshore.
00:14It's made up of 135 concrete modules designed to obstruct and reduce the energy of waves
00:19before they reach the shore, which will in turn help to slow erosion rates.
00:22So far, UWA Oceans Graduate School and the City of Coburn have seen a 20% decrease in
00:27wave energy and 57 species of fish observed compared to just 29 before it was installed,
00:32making it a popular new snorkeling spot for beach goers and we even saw a seal frolicking
00:37when we checked it out.
00:37The positive effects from the research so far on the trial is pretty promising.
