00:00A hands-on approach bringing an ocean back to life.
00:06The process recycling shells into 25 community oyster reefs on display at Henley Beach,
00:12encouraging people to get involved.
00:14We are really serious about getting thousands and thousands of shells together so that we
00:19can build these community oyster reefs.
00:21The state government initiative will use the oysters as a natural defence against algal
00:25blooms.
00:26They are like the kidneys of the ocean so they filter the water.
00:31Long term this is how we actually build some resilience into our marine environment for
00:36years to come.
00:37But it's a long journey from the dinner table to the sea.
00:41The shells are sun bleached for at least six months to sterilise them.
00:46Researchers want to find a quicker way.
00:48Experimenting with pizza ovens and other ways to really cook the shell and anything that
00:52could be potentially living on them and then we'll analyse them to see if we can sterilise
00:56them quickly that way.
00:57Meaning more reefs in the ocean sooner.
