00:00In a classroom of 30 students, around two graduates will struggle to secure a job.
00:04I asked a Kent graduate to see how they fared within the ever-changing job market.
00:09If I want to find something more stable to keep me going, it's, yeah, there's nothing basically out there.
00:15And if the thing, if something comes up, it's always with the requirement that you already have experience.
00:21Coming right out of uni is a very stressful and tough thing.
00:24Just kind of being thrown onto a website, expecting to have all of this experience and, you know, all of
00:29this stuff that doesn't really line up with being a postgraduate uni student.
00:33The landscape right now is just completely basically like a barren wasteland.
00:37So with graduates feeling unwelcome in the current job landscape, I wanted to find out more about what exactly is
00:43going on economically.
00:44I would say that the incentive right now for employers to hire more people, the economic incentive is a little
00:51bit lower.
00:52Why? Because of this uncertainty, they cannot figure out their costs, they cannot figure out their investment, and they need
00:59to figure out how AI will be used.
01:02We shouldn't look graduate employment as only something that concerns employers, or only something that concerns universities, or only something
01:11that concerns students and schools.
01:13All of it is a system. The more aligned the system is, the better the prospects of young people in
01:21the future graduates and non-graduates will become.
01:24So if you find yourself struggling, what can you do? I spoke to the council about their plans to help
01:28people find the right jobs.
01:29The Connect to Work scheme is for everybody struggling to find employment in Kent.
01:35Between 18 and 25, around 30% of the people going through the scheme fit in that age group, but
01:42it's a complete mix of people.
01:44Over the years down here in the southeast, we've seen big businesses close down, and all of a sudden there's
01:49people who have done those jobs for years,
01:51suddenly find themselves trying to look for a new direction.
01:54There is no one entry point, and that's really important. So it's very, very personalised and different for everybody.
02:01Because it's not a case of someone gets a job, thank you, goodbye. The support of someone when they find
02:07work is super important. It's about being in a job that's sustainable.
02:12But are they doing enough?
02:14Do you think the university didn't advertise that kind of service enough then?
02:17At least not to me. I didn't feel that presence around.
02:22I reached out to a university spokesperson. They highlighted their career advisers, who support graduates who are yet to secure
02:29their first graduate role through advice, support or information, as they recognise that it is a challenging point of transition.
02:37With the council claiming to try their best to solve this issue, but graduate unemployment still at its highest, only
02:42time will tell if this scheme can really make a difference.
