00:00There are terrifying scenes in Brazil, as flooding gushes through the streets, washing
00:04away whatever is in its path. It's the result of torrential rains that hit the southeast
00:09of the country. Here, the floods destroyed dozens of homes and took many of the residents
00:14by surprise.
00:18Around 8pm, my daughter noticed that there was a lot of mud in the water. And we felt
00:24it was strange that the water was that colour. Then, about 10 minutes later, everything collapsed.
00:34Huge landslides were triggered, stretching for dozens of metres. On the ground, firefighters
00:39are busy trying to rescue people trapped in the rubble.
00:4490% of the people here are my family. Among those buried are my sister and my nephew, other
00:50relatives. It affects me deeply.
00:55It's a race against time for the emergency services mobilized throughout the region.
01:01We currently have firefighters working in 10 areas, with more than 500 people mobilized
01:07in these rescue operations. This is the biggest geological disaster ever to hit the city of
01:12Juiz de Fora.
01:15Extreme events like this are becoming more frequent in Brazil. In 2024, floods and storms
01:21caused the deaths of more than 200 people. Scientists link most of these natural disasters
01:26to the effects of climate change.
