Follow along with the TDN to get a first look at the debut crop of yearlings by Kentucky Derby winner Mage. Airdrie Stud's Bret Jones explains why the success of Mage's brothers, Dornoch and Baeza, makes this the perfect time to breed to the son of Good Magic.

00:07We're just getting started on Mage's third year. First two years have been great. He's
00:12bred 170 mares that first year with these young stallions. It's all about giving them the
00:17opportunity and he'll have that opportunity. We've bred some of the absolute best mares on
00:22the farm to him. I don't know that we've ever bred a stronger group of the erdry mares to a
00:26first-year stallion than we have with Mage. So he's got every chance in the world
00:30and I could not be happier with with the babies that we're getting. From that
00:35first crop we really took the biggest swing that we could on him. We've bred the
00:40dam of Zandon. We've bred the dam of Antiquarian. We've bred the dam of Chunk of
00:45Gold. We've bred the dam of Taxed. So many of the mares that have really been good to
00:51us over these last several years were the ones that went went into that first book
00:56We've had that great support from the syndicate in addition to obviously what
01:00we're sending. Ramiro himself, I think we all know how much Ramiro loves this horse,
01:06went out for his individual clients bought four or five really really quality mares.
01:10So there's there's a lot of people behind this horse. The foals that he sold in
01:15November are probably the best endorsement for for what he's throwing. He had a
01:19great Keeneland November sale, averaged over 125,000 for that sale, had 12
01:24individual six-figure foals. They really do look like their their derby-winning
01:29sire and I take that as an excellent sign. When we did the deal on Mage we knew he
01:33was a brilliant Kentucky Derby winner. We did not know that his dam would be
01:38historic and that's what Puka is. Dornock is a brilliant horse. Baeza is a
01:44brilliant horse. A mare that has had three grade one winning sons and not just that,
01:49the classic type sons. That's pretty well uncharted territory. What I love about Mage
01:56is Mage was that classic type obviously, but he also won first out 28th of his
02:02three-year-old year going seven furlongs when he's going 45 seconds for the half on
02:07the on the lead. It takes a very special horse to get that latest start and and put
02:13it all together by by early May. Mage digs down deep, urged onto the wire, onto the
02:19wire to win the Derby! I think Mage is a is a really a bigger version of his sire.
02:25He's grown to 16-1. To us he's just an ideal size and make for a stallion and a
02:31beautiful horse who's throwing beautiful babies. Frankly I think he has the highest
02:35ceiling of any stallion we stand. You know he goes with so many different mare
02:39types. We're breeding 20 of our own mares to him this year. We're breeding Believe
02:44You Can, who won the Kentucky Oaks for us, has had a couple of graded stakes
02:48horses. We all know it's a gamble to breed to a third-year stallion, but at 15,000
02:53to me it's it's a great gamble. And then you have the benefit of actually seeing
02:59what the foals look like to give you an incredible amount of optimism.
