Viral orangutan plushie favored by abandoned monkey sold out

Shoppers rush to buy an IKEA orangutan plush on Feb. 24, 2026 after a baby Japanese monkey went viral for adopting one as its mother figures. Punch, a seven-month-old macaque abandoned by his mother at Ichikawa City Zoo, was given the toy after keepers tried substitutes like towels and other stuffed animals. Baby macaques cling to their mothers for strength and security, so the plush provided comfort, said zookeeper Kosuke Shikano. Videos of Punch with the orange, bug-eyed orangutan sparked a surge in zoo visitors and sold out the toy in multiple countries.
