00:01Coordinated cartel attacks after the capture and death of infamous Mexican drug lord El
00:06Mencho left behind a trail of charred vehicles on Monday, including this school bus in Oaxaca.
00:12At least 25 members of Mexico's National Guard military police lost their lives in the attacks.
00:18Mexico's security minister said 30 cartel members were also killed during the violence,
00:23as well as one bystander, and at least 70 people were arrested across seven states.
00:28Schools remained closed and streets were largely empty, as soldiers and security forces swept the area.
00:35In an assessment of Sunday's military operation to capture Nemesio El Mencho Oseguera,
00:41Mexican authorities on Monday said a visit from a romantic partner was ultimately what led to his apprehension.
00:47Defense Minister Ricardo Trevilla gave details to reporters.
00:54Through military intelligence work, we located a trusted person of one of El Mencho's romantic partners
00:59who transported her to a facility in the town of Tapalpa, Jalisco.
01:07At that location, she met with El Mencho, this romantic partner.
01:18And on February 21st, she left the property and we obtained information that El Mencho remained at that location.
01:27Oseguera, along with two of his bodyguards, were injured during the raid.
01:31All three were transported by helicopter to Mexico City, but did not survive.
01:36Oseguera's death triggered violence across Mexico, where cartel loyalists blocked roads and burned vehicles in retaliation against the government.
01:44Burned out cars in the middle of the street.
01:46U.S. tourist Ryan Davis, who was on holiday with his boyfriend in Puerto Vallarta, said he was awoken by
01:52blasts, but assumed there were fireworks.
01:55There had been fires that were ongoing all day, and you could see them from various aspects of the roof.
01:59And some of them were far away, some of them were close, some of the smoke would, like, hit you.
02:03And that was later in the day when this helicopter—it's hard to see in the video, but on both sides
02:08of the helicopter,
02:09there were men with very large guns, so we just hoped that they were the good guys and not the
02:15bad guys.
02:15President Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday denied U.S. participation in the operation to capture Oseguera, Mexico's most wanted cartel leader,
02:24but did say that information was exchanged.
02:27Oseguera's death deals a strong blow to the Jalisco New Generation cartel, believed to be a major supplier of fentanyl
02:34to the U.S.
