00:00Mexican President Claudia Scheinbaum on Sunday vowed justice for the brazen killing of Carlos
00:07Manzo, the mayor of Uruapan, and a vocal critic of organized crime who had repeatedly urged
00:14the government to strengthen protection for public officials.
00:17Manzo, 40, was shot dead on Saturday while attending a Day of the Dead candlelight festival
00:23in Uruapan's city center in the violence-plagued western state of Michoacan.
00:29He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but later pronounced dead.
00:33A city council member and a bodyguard were also injured in the attack.
00:37Mexico's security ministry said two suspects were arrested, while a third was killed.
00:42We maintain permanent communication with the state of Michoacan government, and we intensified
00:47the coordinated efforts to strengthen security in Uruapan and throughout the region.
00:52Unfortunately, the aggressors took advantage of the vulnerability of a public event to
00:56realize the attack.
00:57We condemn this crime energetically and have the certainty that there will be no impunity.
01:01As in other cases, we will reach the last consequences so that this traitor is fully clear and all
01:08the responsible people are detained.
01:09A march was planned for Sunday in Michoacan's capital, Morelia, to demand justice for Manzo's
01:16death and an end to violence and corruption.
01:19One of Mexico's few independent mayors, Manzo had led Uruapan since September 2024.
01:26Frequently seen wearing a bulletproof vest, he had openly criticized the federal government's
01:31handling of organized crime and voiced concerns for his own safety.
