The Washington Wizards trading for Trae Young and Anthony Davis signals something rare in today’s NBA: commitment. Instead of sitting in the middle of the standings year after year, the Wizards chose aggression.

This Washington Wizards move for Trae Young and Anthony Davis is about identity. With a healthy Anthony Davis anchoring the defense and Trae Young driving the offense, Washington finally has star-level gravity on both ends. Add in a potential top pick in a loaded draft and a developing young roster, and the Wizards are no longer stuck between rebuilding and competing.

Too many franchises hover in mediocrity—never bad enough for elite draft positioning, never bold enough to chase stars. The Washington Wizards clearly picked a direction. The question now: does this core have enough balance to actually win games instead of just putting up numbers?

Is this reckless… or exactly what serious franchises are supposed to do?

00:00What's up everybody, my name is Trey and welcome back to Better Days Sports.
00:04And in this video, we'll be breaking down the Washington Wizards in a nutshell.
00:11Because I don't care about the knee-jerk reactions that most people have
00:16when it comes to the Washington Wizards getting both Trey Young and Anthony Davis.
00:22Because this is exactly what more NBA teams should be doing.
00:27And let me explain.
00:30Sure, should they be trading for Trey Young in AD?
00:33Not necessarily.
00:34But the Washington Wizards made a statement in trading for these two players.
00:41They said Anthony Davis, when healthy, and Trey Young, when healthy,
00:46are arguably two top 10 players in the league.
00:51And we probably won't be able to find that through the draft.
00:54At least in the short term.
00:57Sure, teams have been building through the draft.
00:59You can look at the Pistons.
01:01You can look at the Spurs.
01:03You can look at Oklahoma City.
01:04But for majority of these first-round picks, they do not pan out to be a Cooper Flat,
01:11to be a Shea, to be a Chet, to be a Wimby, to be a Castle, to be a Dillon
01:19Harper.
01:19So, it's not guaranteed just because you have a ton of first-round picks that those picks actually plan out.
01:27And because of that, I'm so tired of half the teams in the NBA tanking, half competing,
01:38and then ending up in the exact same place they were for multiple years.
01:43They don't have a star.
01:45They have top picks who don't plan out.
01:48And they have no real upside.
01:50The Washington Wizards, however, said,
01:52Hey, instead of hoping and praying in the draft that we get somebody that's going to change around our future,
01:59how about we just go and get those players in a year in which their stock is probably the lowest?
02:08And I know what you're thinking.
02:11It's AD.
02:13Look, a healthy AD you want on your team.
02:16A healthy Trae Young, at one point in time, took his team to the Eastern Conference Finals.
02:23Sure, did he win anything?
02:24No, but name another player on the Hawks besides Trae Young that year.
02:28I'll wait.
02:31Exactly, okay?
02:35So, the league, and this is my opinion, the league absolutely punishes mediocrity.
02:44If you live in the middle, which I think a great example of this, the New Orleans Pelicans.
02:53They have been a team that has made moves, not for necessarily all-star level players, but for good players.
03:02You get CJ McCollum, you get Javonte Murray, you get Jordan Poole.
03:08And by no stretches of imagination are any of those players that I just listed where you're like,
03:16Oh, that player can get us to the finals.
03:19They can put us over the hump.
03:21We're on a team that's right on the edge.
03:24That's the player that's going to get us.
03:27No, they're not.
03:28And the fact that they talk themselves into that is why so many teams are at this, we are mediocre
03:37stage, and they continue to live there.
03:40And the Wizards, on the other hand, took a big swing.
03:44Trae Young gives them an offensive engine, somebody they can absolutely run their offense through,
03:50somebody who will facilitate for other people, and a guard who actually will take the last shot.
03:57Not only that, with a healthy AD, they have a defensive identity, they have a legit rim protector,
04:04and they have instant credibility with those two players of no longer being an absolutely bottom feeder of the East.
04:11But now, they can be sneaky good.
04:15Can they be a playoff team?
04:16Not a play-in team, but can they be a playoff team?
04:18So let me paint this perspective for you.
04:21The Washington Wizards arguably are going to have a top five pick.
04:24They have Trae Young.
04:25They have AD.
04:26They have a lot of young talent.
04:29Not only that, but they also have the number two pick last year that they drafted,
04:32who is starting to come into his own as a stretch four.
04:37Has a lot of upside.
04:38Is he the best second overall pick ever?
04:41No, but he's definitely shown sparks of being a very good player.
04:45So the bigger picture is, sure, we're going to tank for the rest of this year.
04:49We're going to have a very high pick in an absolutely loaded draft where we can get arguably the best
04:56wing scorer in college basketball.
04:58Or maybe we get the best scoring two guard next to Trae Young so we can get some of that
05:04pressure away from Trae Young.
05:05And they have a roster of just young, skilled players.
05:10This wasn't a desperation move where they're like, we have to mortgage our entire future to get these two older
05:16stars.
05:16They're stacking, in my opinion, the timeline on the front end.
05:22Sure, are they going to be extremely relevant the rest of this season?
05:26No.
05:26They're tanking.
05:27They're trying to get a top five pick.
05:28But next year, with everybody healthy, a top pick, young talent, I think this team is a lot more dangerous
05:36than a lot of players or a lot of people.
05:39I think this team is a lot more dangerous than a lot of people want to give them credit for.
05:43Simply because, on paper, with the asterisk of AD being injured and Trae Young being a small guard who's also
05:51been injured a little bit in his career.
05:53Especially after leaving the Hawks as disgruntled as he did.
05:57I don't care.
05:59I respect this move from the Washington Wizards because it wasn't safe.
06:03It wasn't conventional.
06:05And this isn't playing to be a play-in team as they have been for, it seems like, the last
06:11five years.
06:12This is a team that says, next year, with the way that we are constructed, we have the ability to
06:18be in the playoffs, make a run, and with an East that seems to be the more injury-riddled conference,
06:26maybe with one or two stars getting injured, it's going to lead directly into the Wizards finding themselves in the
06:33Eastern Conference Championship, maybe even the finals.
06:37Is it something that I'm predicting?
06:39No, it is not.
06:40But I just wanted to throw out there, I absolutely love what the Wizards did, this trade deadline, getting two
06:45legit all-star level players and showing up their timeline to be a competent organization.
06:52But let me ask you, are you a fan of this trade for the Wizards?
06:56Are you a fan of Trae Young or AD?
06:58Maybe you don't think they work well together, or maybe you think this is absolutely disaster waiting to happen because
07:03of their injury history.
07:05But also, what else were the Wizards going to do?
07:09So leave your comments in the comment section down below of your opinion.
07:12Let me know how you feel about the Wizards making some questionable moves.
07:15But in my opinion, one of the few teams that said, hey, we're going for it, and we're not going
07:21to be bad next year.
07:22I know we were this year, but we have some building blocks, and we have the right players in the
07:28right type of systems that, in theory, work on paper.
07:32And let's see how that actually translates to on the court.

07:48And just like that, I will see you in the next one.
07:49Peace.
