00:01U.S. President Donald Trump expressed frustration on Friday after the Supreme Court struck down
00:07his sweeping tariffs.
00:08He also lashed out at the justices who backed the 6-3 decision.
00:14The Supreme Court's ruling on tariffs is deeply disappointing.
00:21And I'm ashamed of certain members of the court, absolutely ashamed, for not having
00:27the courage to do what's right for our country.
00:30Trump imposed the tariffs or taxes on imports under a law meant for use in national emergencies.
00:36Conservative Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the ruling, which upheld the lower court's
00:41decision that the Republican president's use of the 1977 law exceeded his authority.
00:48It upends the leverage Trump and his trade envoys have wielded over foreign governments, both
00:52allies and foes, and negotiating tables around the world to reshape diplomatic relations
00:58in global markets.
01:00Trump said other alternatives are available to him to pursue tariffs, and announced a
01:0510 percent global tariff under legal authority different from the one at issue in the case.
01:10Now I'll go the way I could have gone originally, which is even stronger than our original choice.
01:16Democrats and various industry groups hailed the ruling.
01:19Many business groups expressed concern that the decision will lead to months of additional
01:24uncertainty as the administration pursues new tariffs through other legal authorities.
01:30Another question is what happens to the tariff money collected so far?
01:35An estimated $175 billion, according to Penn Worden budget model economists.
01:42Plaintiffs in the case have asked for a refund.
