01:59Hiya! PenguinTruth here!
02:01Welcome to Otaku Evolution!
02:03Be sure to like, subscribe, and contribute to the Patreon!
02:08Ugh!
02:09Another anime about clankers.
02:11Damn skin jobs taking our human jobs.
02:15Lots of toasters and toaster lovers in this video's subject.
02:19Bad enough we had to identify with Astro Boy.
02:22Fucking Andy he is.
02:24But now this goddamn bitch Armitage too?
02:27It's sickening, isn't it?
02:29I swear the next cogsucker I see, I'm gonna scrap.
02:33You just know these fucking circuit heads are up to no good.
02:37Fucking cromies.
02:39Ruining everything.
02:41But enough casual racism.
02:43Today's subject is a sequel to the Armitage the Third OVA.
02:46And I guess the movie version, Bolly Matrix.
02:49Don't remember Armitage?
02:51Allow me to give you a little refresher course about the Transistor Tramp.
02:56Naomi Armitage was a cop on a terraformed Mars of the future who was investigating a string
03:01of murders of special androids called Thirds.
03:05Armitage herself is a third, able to reproduce like an ordinary human.
03:09Well, a lot of humans resented this.
03:12Mostly, surprisingly, feminists.
03:14Who you think would be relieved to be unburdened by childbirth.
03:18And thus the assassinations.
03:20Together with her partner Ross Syllabus, who becomes increasingly robotic over time
03:24due to injury replacements, they unravel the mystery behind the Thirds,
03:29find Armitage's creator, and fend off an attack by the military.
03:33We left off with the two coupling, with Armitage Praggers.
03:38Armitage the Third, the OVA in the movie version, Bolly Matrix,
03:42was a decent sci-fi action romp.
03:45But anything outside of that was dumber than wallpaper.
03:48You can't help thinking that it aspired to be more than it was capable of.
03:52Luckily, writer Chiaki J. Konaka moved on to better things,
03:56like Lane, Big O, and, um...
04:00Episodes of Astro Boy 2003?
04:03Huh.
04:05He's kind of a weirdo these days.
04:08But he was also a weirdo those days.
04:28In Armitage the Third, Duel Matrix,
04:31Armitage and Syllabus, under new names,
04:33have a family with their daughter Yoko,
04:35and live peacefully on Mars.
04:38However, a man named Demetrio Mardini,
04:41who wishes to revive the Third Project,
04:43lures Armitage to Earth,
04:45where he demands she hand over the data on reproduction,
04:48which would allow him to design people that are perfectly servile, genetically.
04:53Of course, Armitage isn't so keen on doing that,
04:56so Demetrio captures Yoko,
04:58hoping to derail a robot rights bill,
05:00and force Armitage to give in to his demand.
05:02It all climaxes in an appropriately action-packed finale,
05:07where Naomi and Ross have to fend off two robot copies of the former.
05:11It's pretty neat.
05:37It's also pretty rote and uninspired for the most part.
05:40It's just recycling elements of the previous Armitage installment,
05:44and adding things from other movies and TV shows of its type.
05:47Like the original Armitage the Third,
05:49it's a pretty average sci-fi action movie about robots and androids,
05:53without going beyond to be more than that.
05:55Just another dime-a-dozen cyberpunk copycat,
05:59done much better in any number of better movies and TV shows.
06:03I think it's even a step down from Astro Boy 2003, to be honest.
06:07And that's Armitage the Third, Duel Matrix.
06:09It's mostly forgettable.
06:11Well, that was a short vid-
06:12Oh, right.
06:14There is...
06:15one more thing to talk about.
06:17Something about the English dub.
06:19Now, I don't want to get too much into the English dub,
06:22because I have an episode later this year to talk about it in.
06:25I just wanted to get this one thing in here,
06:27because it's an interesting little tidbit that will fill up time quite nicely.
06:31In the movie, there's a certain character, named Mouse,
06:34who is an underground repairer of robots who assists Armitage,
06:38but then immediately backstubs her by trying to sell her data to Demetrio.
06:42He has quite an...
06:44interesting voice.
06:47Unfortunately, I'm kind of attached to this body.
06:50Anyway, I need to move again.
06:52Can you do that?
06:53Can I?
06:55Why, I'm a technological genius.
06:57However, it'll cost a pretty penny.
07:00Payment in Earth dollars only.
07:01No IOUs.
07:03No again.
07:04No again.
07:05The bees hereabouts?
07:07Call Waze.
07:08We shall be robbed and crunched.
07:10Not likely.
07:11We have nothing of value.
07:12That's our problem.
07:15The character Mouse is actually played by actor Ahmad Best.
07:19Probably Best, known as Jar Jar Binks in the Star Wars prequels.
07:24Yeah, Jar Jar is in the Armitage the Third sequel.
07:27Well, to be clear, Mouse is definitely not Jar Jar,
07:31but is similarly irritating.
07:33I'm sure Best has mixed feelings about Jar Jar,
07:36given the extremely negative feedback given about the character,
07:40who is widely disliked by moviegoers.
07:42Personally, despite my title card joke,
07:45I don't really find Jar Jar any more annoying than, say, C-3PO.
07:49He was a colorfully goofy foil to the Dead series' Klingon Jinn
07:53and the exasperated Obi-Wan Kenobi.
07:56Maybe he was overused in The Phantom Menace,
07:59but Best can hardly be blamed for that.
08:02Here, while Mouse is likewise goofy and distracting,
08:05he's only in a few scenes and ultimately redeems himself somewhat.
08:08And given some of the other performances in the dub,
08:11he's far from the worst.
08:13In fact, he's probably...
08:15The Ahmad Best.
08:24I'm very sorry.
08:28And that was...
08:29Yeah, that was Armitage the Third Duel Matrix.
08:33I can only recommend it if you've already seen the original Armitage the Third OVA, or movie,
08:38and are clamoring for more.
08:40It's less ambitious than its predecessor,
08:43but honestly, not really any worse.
08:45It was kind of a lateral move, if you follow.
08:48But I didn't feel like I wasted my time or anything.
08:51It was only 90 minutes,
08:52and I certainly could have spent them worse ways.
09:08Well, that's enough Otaku Evolution for now.
09:11Next time...
09:12Oh, damn.
09:13More robots.
09:14Well, next time on Otaku Evolution,
09:17at least the robots will be big and piloted,
09:19for I'll be looking at Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin.
09:22Or a Mobile Suit for a skumptum, as I like to call it.
09:26Until then,
09:28see ya!
09:38You son of a bitch.
09:40I'm not gonna forget this.
09:42Gungan's not dying without a fight.
09:44We's a warriors.
09:52We're all here.
09:56We're all here.
10:07Now,
10:08we're all here.
10:08We're all here.
10:10We're here.
10:10We're all here.
10:13Peace break.
