In this video, PGA Professional Nick Drane explains how to stop pushing your irons.
Transcript
00:05Hi, my name is Nick Drane. I'm a PGA professional and Master Fitting Specialist here at the
00:09Titleist Performance Centre at Woburn. In this video, we're going to talk about how to stop
00:12pushing your irons. The fundamentals within your setup are going to help you deliver the club in
00:17the correct fashion to hit the golf ball in your right direction. A lot of the time I see incorrect
00:23setup position primarily around ball position. So if I demonstrate for you now, if I have the
00:29ball position too far back in my stance, that's going to cause the club to swing out to the right
00:34with the club face open primarily. It's going to allow the ball to stay right of my target. Ideally,
00:40what we'd like to see is the ball just left of middle. So as I come into the golf ball,
00:47my club is now swinging more towards my target with the club face square to my path,
00:52and then I can start it at my target with a much straighter golf shot. One key part of being
00:57able
00:57to hit your irons in the right direction is being properly fit for them. See a PGA professional
01:02so they can fit you accordingly for your right lie angle, which is going to help you with a tighter
01:06shot dispersion. I'm now going to demonstrate to you what happens if the ball position is too far
01:11back in my stance. You'll see my target, the flag, out in front. If I now show you into my
01:16setup,
01:21my shoulders are now aligned a long way to the right of my target. If I put the ball position
01:25just
01:26left of middle where I ideally want it, my shoulders are now properly aligned. I can go ahead and hit
01:34the shot at my target. As you can see, that ball flew towards my target. The golf swing hasn't changed,
01:47but I've made sure that my fundamentals are correct. A really simple exercise you can do to keep an eye
01:52on
01:52your fundamentals and your ball position is with a couple of alignment sticks, or a couple of golf
01:56clubs will do as well, is pop one down parallel to your feet and then I've got my other alignment
02:01stick relative for my ball position. So as you'll see here, it is just left of middle and it's going
02:09to ensure that I have the correct ball position every single time.
