00:00While wildfires happen at different times across the globe, they do all have one thing in common.
00:04They can be absolutely devastating. One of the clearest ways to see the full impact of these
00:09events is to see them from space, and that's exactly what Europe's Copernicus program is
00:14built to do. On January 9th, 2026, a Sentinel-2 satellite captured this devastating scene of the
00:19bushfires in Australia, capturing the dark scars where the fire had already burned through the
00:23landscape. According to the Copernicus website, these uncontrolled fires have led to the closure
00:28of hundreds of schools and the evacuation of entire communities, which has left thousands
00:33living without electricity. However, thanks to the Sentinel-2 imagery, analysts are able to map
00:39burned areas and assess damage to better assist in emergency response and recovery planning.
