In the "real" events of October 1986 on Rokkenjima, Maria Ushiromiya was a lonely, occult-obsessed nine-year-old, emotionally neglected by her mother. That night, amidst a violent family conflict, the old island legend of "Happy Maria", a servant burned as a witch for causing a landslide that buried a treasure, took hold of her imagination. Driven by this folklore and a desire for magical belonging, she likely followed or was used by adults in a desperate, superstitious search for this legendary treasure. This quest led not to gold, but to a long-forgotten cache of unstable wartime explosives, triggering the cataclysm that consumed the island. Maria died in that initial, brutal explosion, a victim of a tragic accident born from human greed and her own profound longing for a magical world.
However, Maria’s story does not end there. From the instant of the explosion, a metaphysical "catbox" was created a swirling sea of possibilities and the final consciousness of the deceased. From this, a narrative witch crafted endless fragments to explore the truth and meaning of the tragedy. Within these Fragments, Maria is resurrected as a core literary archetype: Maria the Witch.
She is no longer merely the dead child, but a conceptual being forged from her essence. This "Mariage Sorcier" serves multiple roles: she is the bridge to the island's ancient curse, the one who hears the ghostly "Happy Maria" chant, making the supernatural a tangible force in the story. Her unwavering belief in magic and her innocent smile in the face of horror constantly challenge the protagonist to deny the impossible. Most importantly, she embodies the central tragedy the abused child whose desperate need for love and wonder transforms into a dangerous, magical force.
