Three months earlier, at the Villa delle Rose near Naples...

During a summer ball at the Duke of Montefeltro's estate, Claudio, a young Roman aristocrat, meets Camilla. It is immediate, mutual love at first sight. Their families quickly approve of their engagement. To seal their union, Claudio commissions a miniature portrait of Camilla from the renowned Florentine painter, Lorenzo di Medici. On the silver frame, he has their interlaced initials engraved: "C & C".

Clara, Camilla's elder sister, has always lived in her younger sister's shadow. Beautiful but bitter, she was ostracized by society after a scandal involving a married officer. She sees her sister's marriage as her final chance to re-enter the world that rejected her.

The Trigger Incident: The day the portrait is delivered, Clara sees it first. She notices a troubling detail added by the overzealous painter: an additional, nearly invisible small "C" entwined within the rose leaves of the frame. This detail corresponds, in fact, to the secret monogram Clara uses in her private correspondence – a mark she once shared with Camilla but which her sister abandoned years ago.

The Manipulation: Clara sees an opportunity. She writes a passionate love letter to Claudio, signing it simply with a "C" ambiguous enough for Claudio to believe it comes from Camilla. She slips in references to intimate moments she has observed between the betrothed couple. The masterstroke (or act of perfidy): she uses paper scented with jasmine, Camilla's favorite perfume.

The Discovery: Claudio receives the letter the very morning he must leave for Rome on family business. He is troubled, the style is more sensual, more desperate than Camilla's. But above all, he recognizes the "C" from the miniature portrait, the same delicate interlacing. He wonders: why would Camilla sign with a secret "C", different from their official monogram "C & C"? Does she have a part of herself that she is hiding from him?

This suspicion haunts him throughout his journey, setting the stage for the opera's central conflict: a man about to test his beloved's fidelity based on a forged letter, and a woman unaware that the proof of her sister's treachery is about to be misinterpreted as proof of her own guilt.
