00:00Do Europeans want to leave the ECHR?
00:07Many Europeans don't appear to be aware of how well the European Convention on Human Rights is doing its job,
00:13but few want to withdraw from it.
00:15Half of Polish citizens think the European Court of Human Rights, which upholds the Convention, is doing a good job,
00:22while the Spanish, Germans, Italians and French are more divided about its performance.
00:27This is according to a YouGov survey which followed a call by European countries to create a new ECHR migration
00:34framework.
00:35While awareness of the court's performance may not be especially high, there is little appetite to leave the Convention.
00:41Between half and two-thirds of respondents in each of the five EU countries surveyed say that they want to
00:48stay in the ECHR.
00:49When it comes to membership benefits, citizens are most likely on average to think it has a positive impact on
00:55security cooperation.
00:56with other European nations, as well as on their nation's reputation with other countries.
01:02By contrast, Europeans are most likely to think ECHR membership has had a negative impact on their country's ability to
01:09deport illegal migrants.
01:11More than half of respondents support changing the ECHR's rules so that migrants who commit serious crimes can no longer
01:18use family separation to prevent deportation.
01:21However, only two to four percent of Europeans claim to know a great deal about the ECHR and what it
01:28actually does.

01:29will require a new event and its integrity to continue to remind them of the ECHR,
