00:00the renault 5 is back and now in this retro futuristic design which i have to say i absolutely
00:08love it looks good it looks different but still harks back to the original 5 and now has these
00:16led lights led signature lights you've got blinkers on the bottom there you've got interesting
00:23touches like this 5 over here that lights up depending on how much battery you have
00:28so if i were to lock it i can lock it and then unlock it and it'll light up telling
00:37me
00:38sort of how much battery i have well it should anyway there we go i've got about half of the
00:44battery left you've got stickers you've got this red trim you've got a black roof so everything
00:54is two-tone and on the back if you're a little older like me then this will definitely jog your
01:01memory this this shape over here how many renault 5s have you seen on your streets this is really cool
01:09because the renault 5 is a smaller car with today's standards i mean with 90s standards it's huge but
01:17today's standards it's fairly small the boot itself is not that huge it's very deep so which can be a
01:25bit annoying loading things in but otherwise yeah it's it's not huge it's okay for shopping but for
01:31any really longer trips it's going to be a bit of a squeeze i'm not entirely sure about the design
01:37decision to of where to put this charge port because this is on the driver's side and you might
01:45think oh that's very practical i get out and i immediately have the charge port but if you're
01:50parking in a city where a lot of parking spaces will be parallel parked or parallel parking well
01:57you park on your right side and with the car charging well it sticks out so you're just waiting
02:05when someone will drive by and accidentally hit either the charging cable or the charging port door
02:12so not sure about that one i'm going to sit in the back behind my driving position you also have
02:19this
02:19cool two-ton interior here in the back let's close the doors and uh yeah it's a bit of a
02:28squeeze there's
02:29not much space left for my knees and for my feet for my shoes i actually have to have them
02:36underneath
02:36the front seat and it's extremely low the front seat which means that i feel my fingers i mean
02:44not fingers my toes under the front seat so it's not the most comfortable experience to be completely
02:52honest there is no frunk at the front either everything is shaken up by electronics pipes
03:00wires the motor i guess that's it so right now i'm at a fast charger and i'm charging up the
03:09car i'm at
03:1035 percent battery and despite the fact that this can take 50 kilowatts of fast charging well fast-ish
03:18charging it's only charging with 10 kilowatts as you can see here okay granted i've only arrived here
03:24like 15 minutes ago but it's it says 2 hours 48 minutes to 80 percent which is a very long
03:31time
03:31now it is minus 4 degrees outside but here's the thing someone on reddit that i found mr serpula
03:39thank you very much for your experimentation and research who also has a reno 5 and has done
03:45research with an obd scanner and several trips to chargers and he found that well the battery
03:53preconditioning only really works if you put in your destination in google maps which is logical but
04:02what is a little less logical is the fast charger cannot be your final destination it has to be a
04:10stop
04:10on the destination to wherever you're going and secondly
04:16the you also have to have at least 30 minutes driving time to this fast charger otherwise the
04:25battery will not be preconditioned which results in well powers like this and now i'm going to be stuck
04:32here for quite a while unless i unless i do something about this or go on the motorway and just
04:39gun it
04:39all the time to heat up the battery kind of sucks so i'm sitting here at 41 we're only at
04:4611 kilowatts
04:47now power it was hovering at about 9.7 before now it actually came up to 11 but it's still
04:53sluggish it's
04:54very sluggish so i have a bit of a specific issue now here because uh well you probably won't see
05:01this
05:01very much i'm testing this car and i just want to uh charge it up for tomorrow when i have
05:06to return it
05:07but i have to sit here and i tried finding a fast charger within well at least 30 minutes away
05:15and
05:15then some random destination and i couldn't find anything really at least over here that would be
05:22more than 30 minutes away uh and you know there there are charges more than 30 minutes away but i
05:28don't want to drive all the way there just to charge um so i tried i tried um well doing
05:37a little
05:38funny and making it think i'm going to a charger at least 30 minutes away but again i couldn't really
05:44find a lot of stuff that would uh that would fit the bill here so it's a bit of a
05:49weird problem this
05:50is a mostly a city car because it's fairly hungry on the motorway but if you're driving a lot in
05:57a large city
05:58in a big city you won't ever really be able to fast charge your car if needed because well you
06:05can
06:05never really precondition the battery so i get it fast charging is mostly for long travels but
06:14really i think you would you should have the option of preconditioning the battery manually like in a
06:19lot of cars um reno should really implement that i think because yeah this kind of sucks having to
06:26wait okay so i tried being clever and saying you know what i'll use this current charger this fast
06:33charger that i'm right uh i'm at right now but i'll just add like random back and forth destinations
06:40so it thinks oh i have a really really long journey and then in the middle somewhere at least 30
06:45minutes
06:46away there'll be this charger but no because the system oops the system oh come on the system
06:53automatically adds charging stations in between which are less than 30 minutes away
07:01so i don't think i i don't think this will actually work i cannot precondition it
07:08unless the battery is full enough to uh yeah to allow you to drive at least 30 minutes away
07:14to a charging station ah so i was trying to make a more dynamic video here but considering i'm stuck
07:23here charging at less than 10 kilowatts and it's going to take a while well i might as well make
07:28this video here at the charging station but the interior of the car is very nice i really like
07:34it actually the design the colors i thought i wouldn't like this yellow color but it's it's
07:39kind of cool really it gives you these retro vibes and look at that roof that looks cool nowadays when
07:45all cars are like black and dark and gray and everything this car is very sort of dynamic it's it's
07:52cool uh also i like this look at this physical buttons for your climate controls which is very nice
07:58yes you have your ac heated seats heated steering wheel up here but the really nice thing about
08:05this infotainment screen is look at how responsive it is it's very fast does everything you want to
08:12it's very nice so usually i was not expecting this usually you get some sluggish system and then you're
08:20just annoyed by it if you look at here a lot of these modern electric cars are now giving you
08:26these tiny
08:27displays but this one has a large display large display there's not all that much information on
08:34it when you're driving even though you have many many views with these really long animations which is
08:40a bit of a shame i would have liked to uh customize these a bit more but oh well it's
08:45not a big deal you
08:46get used to it still nice to have a big screen and the steering wheel itself is quite nice it's
08:52it's thick
08:52it's leather bound it's heated or leather wrapped and all these buttons are physical these ones i think
09:00are a combination of physical and uh um capacitive but they still click they're still nice to use and
09:08these switches are very nice to use as well so the steering wheel itself very good so below the climate
09:15controls you have your electronic parking brake buttons a little place for well little things two usbc
09:23connectors uh 12 volt connector a phone heating pad i'm sorry a wireless charger little place for more stuff
09:35and a little trash can
09:47the infotainment allows playing android games which is interesting but not all that useful in my
09:53opinion as most people will just use their phones rather than press awkward controls on a dashboard screen
10:07how does it drive then since it's small it's fairly agile and because it's electric and has a low center
10:14of gravity it's like a go-kart fun in the corners and happy to give you a smile its turning
10:20circle is
10:20pretty good as well very useful for bigger cities
10:34we've tested the car in the winter and in such cold temperatures electric cars are quite a bit less
10:40less efficient than in the summer for example the five had an average of 24 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers
10:47which rose up to around 27 when on the motorway it's definitely a car for cities and suburbs
10:54not as much a long distance motorway vehicle
10:56so
11:19reno 5 starts at 27 500 euros for the fully loaded model with the most powerful engine and bigger
11:27of your battery you'll be paying 38 500 euros
