Police commentator reveals how long Andrew can be held by police BBC Radio 5 Live
Transcript
00:00The maximum that they can hold him for an offence of this nature is for 96 hours, so that's for
00:06four days, but that requires extensions for which you have to go firstly to a senior police officer and then
00:14if they wanted to hold him for longer, then to a magistrate's court.
00:19So the absolute maximum will be 96 hours, but in most cases, suspects are held for 12 hours, 24 hours,
00:29perhaps 36 hours, and then released usually on police bail or without conditions, just pending further investigations.
00:40So I would expect that's the process. I've got no inside knowledge of that, but I would expect that that's
00:47probably what will happen in this case.
00:49But don't underestimate the significance of this and the fact that it does allow police to seize lots of documents,
00:55to carry out searches.
00:57We know searches are being carried out in Norfolk and in Berkshire, presumably at his former address, as well as
01:03where he's currently living, and that will give them access to a wealth of material potentially.
