00:00Well, the use of facial recognition and tracking software during ICE raids in the U.S. has reopened a debate
00:07about mass surveillance.
00:09Data and analytics company Palantir has been contracted to work with the U.S. Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement
00:17since the Obama administration.
00:20So why the extraordinary outcry now?
00:23Some argue it's not the tech itself that's new, but rather how it's being deployed that feels different this time
00:32around.
00:33Companies such as Palantir say, while they aren't responsible for government policy, they do believe they're making society safer.
00:43So, Joey, let me ask you, first of all, are we living in a surveillance state?
00:48And if so, is that necessarily a bad thing?
00:51Well, I don't think we're living in a surveillance state.
00:54I think surveillance state would indicate or at least imply that we're being mass surveilled all the time.
01:00I don't necessarily know that that's quite the case.
01:02But technology is a tool that we can utilize to stay safer.
01:06And I think Palantir is probably one of the leading companies that's doing this at the moment.
01:10And so I applaud their efforts to help the government's directives in deportation, as well as keeping our borders safe
01:19and secure.
01:20So, no, I don't believe so.
