00:00A South Korean court has sentenced former President Yoon Suk-yeol to life in prison
00:05after it found him guilty of masterminding an insurrection in his short imposition of
00:10martial law in early December 2024. Yoon was found guilty of leading a rebellion after ordering
00:17military and police to surround the liberal-led National Assembly after imposing the decree
00:23in an attempt to overcome an opposition-controlled legislature.
00:27His martial law only lasted around six hours before a quorum of lawmakers managed to break
00:33through a military blockade and voted to lift the measure. The court said Yoon's decree aimed to
00:39establish unchecked power for, quote, a considerable time. Yoon was suspended just days later after
00:46being impeached by lawmakers before being formally removed by the Constitutional Court in April in
00:52a unanimous vote. He's been under arrest since July last year, with special prosecutors demanding
00:59the death penalty for subverting the country's Constitution and threatening its democracy.
01:04Yoon is expected to appeal the verdict, though analysts believe it's unlikely the courts will
01:09change the sentence.
