00:02Ford Motors said it will invest $5 billion through 2027 in a new universal electric
00:07vehicle platform that will use a 48-volt electrical architecture first commercialized
00:12by Tesla in 2023, according to CNBC. The system replaces the traditional 12-volt setup by drawing
00:19power from the high-voltage EV battery. Ford said the architecture improves efficiency,
00:24reduces wiring, and lowers weight. The first vehicle will be a $30,000 small electric pickup
00:29in 2027. Ford expects 20% fewer parts, 25% fewer fasteners, 40% fewer plant workstations,
00:37and 15% faster assembly. The legacy automaker announced $19.5 billion in write-downs tied
00:44to a pullback in EV plans, but said it will continue investing $5 billion in its new UEV
00:49platform through 2027. U.S. EV sales declined from 10.3% in September to 5.8% in the
00:57fourth quarter.
