00:00Whether it's the sudden loss of a beloved mentor, a character being forced to say goodbye to a dear pal,
00:07or even a hero hopefully looking out on the horizon.
00:10Each of these emotional scenes and moments all force viewers to reach for the nearest box of tissues every single
00:17time they throw on certain Star Wars movies or TV shows.
00:22Keep it clean.
00:23So with a quick salute to the wonderful folks over at our Star Wars and the post that inspired this
00:28list that you're about to watch.
00:30I am Gareth, this is WhatCultureStarWars, and here are 10 Star Wars moments that made us cry.
00:37Number 10, Luke Skywalker Returns Slash Mando and Grogu's Goodbye, The Mandalorian.
00:43Season 3 of The Mandalorian may have been a bit of a disappointment in the end,
00:47but never forget that the episode which ended the prior one boasted one of the most moving Star Wars sequences
00:53of the decade.
00:55Din Djarin, Grogu and the gang looked to be in some serious trouble, as a platoon of dark troopers boarded
01:02the Imperial cruiser they were on.
01:03Before Moff Gideon could escape thanks to his menacing garrison though, a single X-Wing surprisingly arrived.
01:10As Luke McGoranson's impactful score pumped into viewers' ears, the sight of a familiar lightsaber chopping through the mechanical threat
01:18was already enough to hit fans right in the feels.
01:22But the reveal of this very much being the legendary Luke Skywalker, somewhat jarring CGI face aside,
01:28and that he'd come to finish little Grogu's training soon led to many a tear escaping.
01:34Add in the visual of Mando revealing his face to the child for the first time as a tear leaked
01:39out of his own eye,
01:40a promise to see him again that we didn't know at this point if he could keep,
01:44and the return of another adored icon in R2 frickin' D2.
01:49And it's not hard to see why the majority of Star Wars fans were an emotional mess after this mid
01:53-pandemic season finale.
01:55Number 9, Dooku Visits The Tree Tales of the Jedi
01:58Dropping onto Disney Plus in 2022 and bringing with it a number of intriguing revelations and gorgeous storytelling,
02:06the animated tales of the Jedi series focuses on both Ahsoka Tano and Dooku.
02:11It's during the latter one-time Jedi story that we see the eventual Sith Lord interacting with his Padawan Qui
02:18-Gon Jinn,
02:19with viewers getting to see just how much the prequel villain truly cared about his apprentice.
02:24That much was evident as a Dooku who was secretly already working with Sidious,
02:28asked him about the Sith Lord he'd encountered on Tatooine.
02:31This short exchange alongside Master Yaddle,
02:34one which sees the future Darth Tyrannus talk about his student growing up so fast,
02:39and note to Jinn that he won't be able to protect him from this dark side enemy,
02:44only makes the subsequent scene even more of a heartbreaker too.
02:48Jumping forward to the time after Jinn's death at the hands of Darth Maul,
02:52a devastated Dooku is found looking at the Great Tree within the Jedi Temple.
02:57It's here when he explains to Yaddle that a gone-too-soon Qui-Gon was fascinated by this tree when
03:03he was younger,
03:04due to him being raised on the steel and stone planet of Coruscant.
03:08Oh, it's a small moment, but one that makes Qui-Gon's passing feel even more gut-wrenching
03:13with the knowledge of a conflicted Dooku being helpless to save his dear student.
03:18And the entire The Sith Lord episode also forces you to really feel for a complex man
03:24who would ultimately play a big part in the rise of the Empire.
03:27And speaking of Qui-Gon's death,
03:29Number 8, Qui-Gon Jinn's Death, Episode 1, The Phantom Menace.
03:32Even before Tales of the Jedi came along and made the fall of Qui-Gon Jinn even more of a
03:37tearjerker,
03:38Episode 1, The Phantom Menace's big death,
03:41was up there as one of the most emotional of the entire Skywalker saga.
03:45Taking on the Dathomirian badass known as Darth Maul within Theed Palace,
03:51Jinn and his padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi put their all into trying to stop the return of the Sith on
03:56Naboo.
03:56In the wake of an iconic Duel of the Fates opening stretch,
04:00Jinn then finds himself cut off from his apprentice due to those pesky laser gates.
04:05Then, before Kenobi could rejoin the fight,
04:08everyone's favourite maverick Jedi Master was viciously impaled by the ruthless Sith Lord.
04:13Ewan McGregor's soul-piercing cry set the stage for a tremendously dramatic conclusion,
04:20as Obi-Wan eventually sliced his foe in two, getting rid of the horned menace for now.
04:25But the cruel damage was already done,
04:28as Jinn gradually slipped away in his panicking student's arms,
04:33and told Obi-Wan he must train young Anakin Skywalker now instead.
04:37Liam Neeson's subtle and terribly moving performance here,
04:42along with the fact viewers had fallen in love with the charismatic Jedi throughout the runtime,
04:46made it pretty much impossible not to blubber a little at this galaxy-changing demise.
04:51Now I've got a quick question for you,
04:52what do you think is the saddest Star Wars moment of all time?
04:56You let me know in the comments section down below.
04:587. Jinn Erso Watches Her Father's Message
05:02Rogue One A Star Wars Story
05:04It revealed early on in Rogue One A Star Wars Story
05:08that Jinn Erso was separated from her father, Galen,
05:11due to director Orson Krennic,
05:14forcing him to rejoin the Empire to help complete the Death Star.
05:17While she would then grow up believing that her father had shockingly opted to choose the Empire instead of her,
05:24all of that changed when Jinn was shown a moving hologram message recorded by her pops
05:30within Saw Gerrera's hidden base on Jedha.
05:33Here, Galen revealed he had been undercover all this time,
05:36and secretly found a way to add a fatal flaw into the Empire's new superweapon.
05:41But it's the moment when Galen admits that he'd only been able to think about his beloved Jinn and his
05:47murdered wife
05:48when he was feeling strong,
05:49due to the overwhelming pain of losing his family that's the real game-changer here for his daughter.
05:55After going years without hearing from a father that she thought had abandoned her,
06:00watching the superb Felicity Jones finally letting her guard down as Jinn,
06:05while a stoic but broken Mads Mikkelsen as Galen
06:08offered hope to both his Stardust and the rest of the Rebel Alliance
06:12will never not be an absolute tear-maker.
06:15That Stardust turned out to be the codename that Galen used for the Death Star plans
06:20was just the emotional icing on this particular cake.
06:246. Obi-Wan Kenobi Apologises
06:26For All of It
06:27Obi-Wan Kenobi
06:28The Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney Plus series is far from a perfect slice of Star Wars,
06:33with things like its over-reliance on the volume,
06:36and nonsensical character decisions a pesky laser gate strikes again,
06:40making it a quite frustrating experience for Kenobi lovers a lot of the time.
06:44However, there was still a moment there that all of the crappy lighting in the world
06:48could not stop from being an incredibly affecting experience.
06:52After the hotly anticipated rematch of the century on a rather dark planet,
06:57Kenobi breaks down somewhat in front of his old padawan,
07:00blaming himself for his fall and apologising to Anakin Skywalker for all of it,
07:05before then saying goodbye to Darth Vader.
07:08I mean, there's an argument to be made for it being Ewan McGregor's finest ever moment in the role,
07:14with his stunningly raw work here even leaving those on set wiping away tears
07:19as he took responsibility for the fall of his friend.
07:22The show as a whole may not have been an unquestionable home run,
07:25but McGregor and Hayden Christensen certainly knocked it out of the park
07:28throughout this tear-inducing conversation between brothers turned enemies.
07:33Thanks for checking out this Star Wars list today, my friend.
07:36And hey, if you've had a little cry today, then that's all okay too.
07:39Hit subscribe, watch some videos, everything's gonna be alright.
07:42Number 5, The Death of Fives, Star Wars The Clone Wars.
07:46There definitely was no shortage of heart-rending scenes
07:50during the animated ride that was Star Wars The Clone Wars.
07:54With the death of Satine Kryze,
07:55and so much of the emotional series finale that is victory and death,
07:59but perhaps the saddest moments of the entire show
08:03aptly involved one of the titular soldiers who had the power to change everything.
08:08After discovering the existence of inhibitor chips
08:10that had been planted in the brains of the clones,
08:13and feeling they were all part of a mysterious plot,
08:16Fives ends up going on the run when he's accused of trying to kill Chancellor Palpatine
08:21after confronting him about said chips.
08:24Armed with the information that could have potentially put a stop
08:27to the galaxy-changing Order 66 before it was ever executed,
08:31Fives met with his pals Captain Rex and Anakin Skywalker.
08:35But before this brave clone who'd been drugged by Nala Sey
08:39could prevent the purge on the horizon,
08:41he was shockingly shot down by Commander Fox.
08:44It's tough to decide what's more devastating here,
08:47the fact Fives was so very close to stopping so much suffering,
08:51or the visual of this desperate clone's nightmares finally coming to an end
08:55as he's surrounded by the brothers he was trying to protect.
08:59Number 4, Kanan Jarrus Sacrifice, Star Wars Rebels
09:03The galaxy far, far away has seen some pretty moving sacrifices over the decades.
09:08In terms of the animated section of Star Wars, though,
09:12one moment of heartbreaking heroism sits head and shoulders above the rest.
09:16During the Jedi Knight episode in the fourth season of Star Wars Rebels,
09:21Jedi Knight Kanan Jarrus managed to rescue Hera Syndulla
09:25from the clutches of the Empire.
09:27However, just as the two looked to join up with the rest of their rebel pals,
09:30and right after Hera and Kanan shared a kiss,
09:33after she told Jarrus she loved him,
09:35a walker blasted the fuel tower they were being picked up on.
09:39Sensing there was only one way for his friends to survive,
09:42Kanan used the Force to keep the flames an explosion from hitting them.
09:46Pushing a distraught Hera away from the deadly situation
09:50when she tried to save him from his fate.
09:52But it was too late, I didn't even mean to rhyme.
09:55All of the above, Kanan's sight returning
09:57so he could finally see Hera one more time as he fired their ship to safety,
10:02and the overwhelming score throughout
10:05make this a truly painful watch
10:07whether you know Kanan's fiery sacrifice is heading your way or not.
10:11And it's a moment that will almost always guarantee a tier or two
10:14for this fallen legend.
10:17Number 3, Obi-Wan Kenobi has a good feeling about this Star Wars.
10:21A very different kind of sacrifice here, but no less impactful.
10:25The legendary Obi-Wan Kenobi's demise during 1977's Star Wars
10:30is one that has caused a tear to be shed for a variety of reasons over the years.
10:34During a first watch of this classic space opera,
10:37the sudden loss of the Y safety blanket of sorts was one hell of a gut punch,
10:42with youngsters all over the world's bottom lips likely quivering
10:46at the thought of Obi-Wan not being there to save the day anymore.
10:49However, with the knowledge of just how important
10:52this moment involving Darth Vader finally killing his master
10:56really was in the overall story of the Rebel Alliance taking down the Empire,
11:00re-watching this sequence has probably produced more than a few warm, happy tears too.
11:05In the space of a couple of magnificent moments,
11:09the great Sir Alec Guinness somehow conveyed to the audience
11:12with just a few facial expressions
11:14that Luke Skywalker witnessing his soon-to-be-forced spirit master fall here
11:18would be the spark that ultimately led to the destruction of the Empire
11:22and end of the figure known as Vader.
11:25He did warn the Sith Lord that striking him down
11:28would make him more powerful than his old padawan could possibly imagine,
11:32and knowing just how right he was here
11:34as Obi-Wan would continue guiding Luke through the Force long after his death
11:38is definitely enough to cause a bit of the old eye liquid to fall
11:42as he smiles at Vader.
11:44Oh, it's great.
11:45It's powerful, earth-shattering, and hopeful all at once.
11:48Number 2, Darth Vader Saves His Son, Episode 6, Return of the Jedi.
11:53The last of the emotional sacrifices this list is going to make you relive,
11:57and that end of Vader that was mentioned earlier.
12:00Episode 6, Return of the Jedi's Climax,
12:03finally saw the return of Anakin Skywalker,
12:05and oh, what a return it was.
12:07As he witnessed his son being shocked repeatedly by the despicable Emperor,
12:12the Chosen One finally decided enough was enough
12:14after being spared by his own child.
12:17Picking up Darth Sidious and dumping him right down a reactor shaft,
12:20this moment also symbolised Skywalker doing the exact same thing
12:24to the evil Sith Lord he'd become all those years ago.
12:28That alone was the sort of triumphant, air-punching moment
12:31that will never fail to trigger a few tears of joy.
12:34However, Anakin's dying words to his baby boy a few moments later
12:38soon brought more teardrops,
12:40with his wish to see his son with his own eyes,
12:43and comments of Luke being right about him and saving him,
12:47all coming together to create a scene as poignant as it is iconic.
12:51It's all then brought to a bitter end
12:53with a delicate and melancholic version
12:55of the Imperial March's legendary tune,
12:58as water trickles down Mark Hamill's own face,
13:01just as it did our own.
13:03At number one, looking out over the binary sunset, Star Wars.
13:07Star Wars has given the world a ton of rousing,
13:10uplifting and affecting themes over the decades.
13:12However, it's hard to argue against John Williams' binary sunset
13:16as being the very best of the lot,
13:18mostly because of the sheer amount of emotion
13:20and feelings of nostalgia that wash over the average fan
13:24whenever it makes its way into there is.
13:26I get a bit emotional just thinking about it.
13:28It all goes back to that one moment involving a certain Luke Skywalker
13:31looking out towards Tatooine's twin sons during 1977's Star Wars.
13:36Now, sure, the theme did actually first show up a little earlier than that
13:40when Princess Leia gave the Death Star plans to R2-D2,
13:44but there is no question that most remember it more
13:46for being used during that legendary sunset.
13:49After being told he would not be heading off to the Academy that year,
13:53a Luke desperate to leave the desert world
13:55heads out to look at the sun's setting,
13:58wishing to explore this vast galaxy so badly.
14:02Both Williams' effortlessly emotional score and Luke gazing out across the sand
14:07just leaves people with no choice but to tear up time and time again.
14:11Maybe it's the power of the legendary composer's tune,
14:15fans remembering where they were when they first experienced
14:18this magical trip to the galaxy far, far away,
14:20or the all-too-familiar feeling of just longing
14:23for a little more adventure in their lives.
14:26Or it could just be a combination of all of the above.
14:28Whatever the reason, there is simply no getting through this epic setting of the suns
14:32without a few droplets hitting your cheek.
