00:00From glorious family surprises leaving a permanent mark on pop culture,
00:04to disappointing revivals tainting an entire trilogy,
00:07these are those shocking moments when an unanticipated truth completely changed the galaxy forever.
00:13Gareth here from WhatCultureStarWars and these are the 10 best everything you know is a lie moments in Star Wars.
00:19Number 10, Will the Real Queen of Naboo Please Stand Up?
00:22Episode 1, The Phantom Menace
00:24This particular Star Wars lie hiding in plain sight was so damn convincing,
00:29it also just so happened to fool the actor's own mothers.
00:32That's according to Keira Knightley herself,
00:34with the Sabe actor being so convincing as Queen Amidala during the events of The Phantom Menace
00:39that both her own and Natalie Portman's mum weren't sure who was who on set.
00:43Well, they clearly weren't the only ones.
00:45The eventual reveal that Sabe was actually the real Queen of Naboo's decoy,
00:48with Padme going undercover as a handmaiden throughout the film
00:51in an effort to protect herself from the threat of the Trade Federation,
00:54left just about everyone watching on rubbing their eyes out of disbelief.
00:58Both the audience and the likes of Anakin Skywalker, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi
01:02are quickly forced to come to terms with the fact that they'd actually been in the presence of the real Queen
01:07throughout their prior Tatooine adventure.
01:09So remember those moments when Jinn in particular acted quite recklessly
01:12behind who he assumed was the real Queen's back, for example?
01:15Well, they take on a whole new level of awkwardness the second it's made clear
01:18that he was actually patronising the leader of Naboo herself on the desert planet.
01:23What a silly sausage.
01:23Number 9, Palpatine is alive and has been the voice in Kylo Ren's head.
01:28Episode 9, The Rise of Skywalker
01:30Admittedly, the idea of just about any seemingly deceased Star Wars figure being truly gone forever
01:35has long since been made a mockery out of.
01:38But even with that being the case,
01:40the visual of Emperor Palpatine somehow managing to come back from his reactor shaft end in Return of the Jedi
01:45and ultimately becoming the sequel trilogy's real big bad was still a tough one to swallow for most.
01:50Not only had the Dark Lord of the Sith made an unlikely return though,
01:53but he'd also actually been pulling the strings from afar this entire time.
01:58As he quickly revealed to a no doubt perplexed Kylo Ren during the opening stages of The Rise of Skywalker,
02:03the voices he had heard in his head over the years were actually little more than Sidious
02:07manipulating the one-time Ben Solo through Snoke and via an impersonation of Darth Vader.
02:12What a scamp.
02:13So on top of shocking the entire galaxy and much of an underwhelmed audience with his entirely unexpected
02:18clone-assisted return, it turns out that Sidious was also the one really guiding the young Darkseid user all along.
02:25Because of course he was.
02:26Number 8. The Clones Weren't On The Jedi Side After All
02:29Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith
02:31While the clues were rather evident in the fact that the Clone Troopers' armor bore a pretty clear resemblance
02:36to the get-up sported by the Empire's eventual Stormtroopers,
02:39many of the Jedi tasked with attempting to protect the galaxy weren't to know that their apparent allies
02:44had a galaxy-altering dark secret.
02:46But they soon found out that they'd all been living something of a tragic lie throughout the Clone Wars,
02:50the minute Emperor Palpatine uttered the now infamous phrase of
02:53Execute Order 66.
02:56With the many brothers in arms they'd been heading out into battle with,
02:58quickly turning on their former generals and commanders without a second thought.
03:02Now sure, it was hardly their fault,
03:04with pretty much every clone soldier succumbing to the inhibitor chip that had been surgically planted into their brains.
03:09However, that still didn't change the fact that Darth Sidious' final phase of a galaxy-conquering master plan
03:14completely caught the Jedi Order off-guard,
03:17and resulted in almost all of the light-side users fighting the good fight
03:20being wiped from the galaxy in a relatively short space of time.
03:24Number 7. Agent Kallus Reveals He Is Fulcrum Rebels
03:28In order to bring down a ruthless galactic empire hell-bent on ruling and oppressing the galaxy,
03:33you likely need a few inside men and women to help turn the tide in your favor.
03:37And luckily for the Rebels and Ghost Crew,
03:39that's precisely what they had in the form of a secret spy by the name of Fulcrum.
03:43This moniker had actually been used by a number of undercover figures
03:46who helped the Rebel Alliance by providing them with valuable intel.
03:50But the unexpected reveal of Ahsoka Tano being the first figure behind the moniker,
03:54paled in comparison to the revelation of a one-time Imperial Security Bureau agent
03:59being the latest person sporting the codename on Rebels.
04:02After becoming disillusioned by the Empire on the back of being stranded on a moon with Rebel Zebra-Elio,
04:07Alexander Kallus secretly decides to begin aiding their cause from within.
04:11Due to his regular battles with the likes of Kane and Jarrus, Ezra Bridger and the gang though,
04:15it's safe to say that some of Ghost Crew weren't quick to believe their long-time enemy
04:19had actually been helping them for quite some time.
04:21But it was the truth,
04:22as Kallus had routinely secretly supported the Rebels with his vital transmissions
04:26ever since that spell on a moon with Zeb,
04:29and continued to do so after realising the Empire didn't actually care about him in the slightest.
04:34Number 6, Anakin Learns Palpatine's True Nature
04:37Episode 3, Revenge of the Sith
04:39The reveal of Sheev Palpatine being far more than what initially met Anakin Skywalker's eye
04:43ultimately kick-started a chain of events that drastically altered the entire galaxy going forward.
04:49Sensing Anakin's faith in the Jedi was at an all-time low in the wake of not being granted the rank of Master,
04:54despite sitting on the Jedi Council,
04:56the eventual Emperor chose to reveal his true self to his conflicted long-time friend.
05:01And while this jaw-dropping revelation initially resulted in the understandable lightsaber-brandishing response,
05:06Darth Sidious reminding the frustrated Jedi that if he turned him in,
05:09then his beloved Padme Amidala would likely die,
05:12ultimately set the stage for a shocking turn of events later down the road.
05:16Instead of cutting down Palpatine there and then,
05:18Anakin's last few flickers of loyalty toward the Jedi
05:21saw him reveal the truth about the Chancellor to the Council.
05:24But rather than allowing Palpatine the chance to stand trial and live and save Amidala,
05:28Mace Windu's attempt to cut him down provided the final straw for the troubled Jedi,
05:33with Anakin finally seeing through the lies of the Jedi
05:35and deciding to take matters into his own hands
05:38by slicing the Jedi Master's arm off en route to turning to the dark side.
05:42Number 5, The Tusken Raiders Show Their True Colors
05:45The Book of Boba Fett
05:46For the longest time,
05:47Tatooine's Tusken Raiders were presented as barbaric beings to be feared,
05:51with the Sandworld natives infamously attacking Luke Skywalker during A New Hope,
05:55and taking Shmi Skywalker captive before her son horrifically massacred a clan in Attack of the Clones.
06:01But instead of doubling down on this problematic framing of indigenous communities being little more than feral brutes,
06:06The Book of Boba Fett opted to brilliantly change the way both the audience and central figures in the galaxy far, far away
06:12viewed the Tatooine race.
06:14With the titular bounty hunter also finding himself being captured by the unmistakable group,
06:18in the wake of escaping his Sarlacc pit fate,
06:21his taking down of a sand beast while being forced to dig for black melons,
06:24eventually leads to the tribe accepting him as part of the gang.
06:28And it's this development that paves the way for both Fett and the viewer to see the Tuskens in an entirely different light than before.
06:34Far from being little more than a wild, bloodthirsty people,
06:37Boba soon discovers that the Raiders actually boast their own religious traditions,
06:40a complex language, and a strong community who are simply doing all they can to survive
06:45and protect their families on the unstable desert world.
06:48Number 4, Galen Erso reveals he's been living a lie to add a Death Star weakness, Rogue One.
06:53After being abandoned by her paps pretty early in her life,
06:56with Galen Erso being forced back into working for the Empire,
07:00the resilient rebel Jyn was then eventually left behind by Saw Gerrera and his partisans later down the road too.
07:05So it's not hard to see why Jyn would be nursing a bit of resentment towards both men
07:09in the lead up to the moment she was tasked with meeting with Gerrera
07:12to uncover the message Galen had sent to the rebels about a superweapon being forged by the Imperials.
07:18However, as this frustrated and regularly discarded daughter eventually took in the message from her absent father,
07:23a lie she'd been believing in for 15 years soon began to unravel before her teary eyes.
07:28On top of revealing that he wasn't actually loyal to the Empire,
07:31and had gone undercover in order to plant a secret weakness in the heart of the Death Star,
07:35Galen explains via pre-recorded hologram message that his love for Jyn has never faded,
07:40and that he has desperately missed her all this time.
07:43There, in one of the most moving two minutes ever unleashed on the galaxy,
07:46Jyn's pain and heartache over being seemingly coldly ditched and forgotten by her father
07:51just evaporates as she realises he was simply trying to protect her and the rebels from afar.
07:56Number 3, Bo-Katan reveals Mando is a child of the Watch, the Mandalorian.
08:00It was established throughout the first season of Disney Plus' The Mandalorian
08:03that Din Djarin's clan of Beskar-sporting badasses were forbidden from revealing the faces
08:08they housed underneath their unmistakable helmets to another living being.
08:12And as far as Mando was concerned, that was simply the Mandalorian way.
08:16However, upon being rescued by a trio of fellow Mandalorians,
08:19during the show's second season, Mando's world was well and truly flipped upside down,
08:23thanks to a certain iconic member of the legendary group.
08:26As Bo-Katan Kryze unmasks and reveals herself to Jaren,
08:29you can almost hear the sound of the titular hero's jaw hit the ground, or his helmet, or something.
08:34And it's in this moment as Din recuses Kryze and her pals of not being Mandalorian,
08:38that the leader of the group explains to the confused soul that he is in fact a child of the Watch.
08:43Noting that the children of the Watch are a cult of religious zealots,
08:46whose goal is to re-establish the ancient way,
08:49Mando's belief that every Mandalorian out there was following these ideals soon comes crashing down around him.
08:54And this life-changing revelation has now likely set him on a path
08:57to leaving behind the religion altogether later down the road.
09:002. Rey isn't a nobody after all
09:02Episode 9, The Rise of Skywalker
09:04Poor Rey has to deal with quite a few game-changing reveals over the course of the sequel trilogy,
09:08desperately trying to figure out where she belongs in this balmy galaxy throughout episodes 7-9.
09:13The four-sensitive protagonist is initially told by longtime rival-slash-flame,
09:18Kylo Ren, that she wasn't the latest generation of Skywalker, Kenobi, or even his long-lost sister.
09:23Rey was actually a nobody whose junk-dealer parents died on Jakku many years ago.
09:28And while Ren did actually assume this was the case for a time,
09:31the real truth was actually far more depressing.
09:33Far from being a nobody, Rey was actually none other than Emperor Palpatine's granddaughter.
09:37With this latest world-rocking revelation once again being delivered by the former Ben Solo,
09:42as the pair collided during The Rise of Skywalker.
09:44Yet instead of letting her grand palp's legacy define her,
09:47Rey chooses to fully embrace the Jedi way,
09:49and eventually conquer the revived Emperor en route to dropping that last name in favour of her former master's moniker.
09:55Number 1, I am your father, Episode 5, The Empire Strikes Back.
09:59Yer knew it was coming.
10:01After originally believing that his father was nothing more than a spice freighter navigator,
10:05Obi-Wan Kenobi would ultimately explain to young Luke that his dad was actually a Jedi Knight,
10:10who was tragically killed by Vader many moons ago.
10:12But in the wake of that apparent truth changing the way Skywalker viewed his fallen father Anakin,
10:17Luke would once again have to deal with the fact he'd been living a lie
10:20on the back of the masked icon's legendary revelation of being his paps all along
10:24during the closing stages of The Empire Strikes Back.
10:27If that wasn't enough, when confronting his Force Girl's master about this unexpected turn of events,
10:31and being blatantly lied to certain points of view my ass,
10:34the Jedi in training soon discovers that the other that Yoda was referring to
10:38was actually a twin sister Luke didn't realise he even had too.
10:41And better yet, said twin was none other than Leia Organa.
10:45What an awkward rollercoaster, eh?
