On March 6, 2003, Air Algérie Flight 6289, a Boeing 737-2T4, crashed near the Trans-Saharan Highway shortly after taking off from Tamanrasset, killing 96 of the 97 passengers and all 6 crew members. At the time of the accident, it was the deadliest air disaster on Algerian soil.
