00:00The White House says there has been no change in Washington's Taiwan policy.
00:04That's after remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump on arms sales prompted a backlash from
00:09Democrats. Trump said on Monday that he is discussing future arms sales to Taiwan with
00:13Chinese President Xi Jinping and that he would soon make a decision on the issue.
00:17Trump is set to meet Xi in April as he looks for a trade deal with Beijing.
00:22Representative Ro Khanna, who serves on the House Committee on China,
00:25called Trump's admission a blatant violation of Washington's six assurances to Taiwan
00:30dating back to the 1980s. The second of those states that the U.S. has not agreed to consult
00:36with China on arms sales to Taiwan. Senator Andy Kim made a similar statement on X,
00:41accusing Trump of abandoning U.S. policy on Taiwan. These six assurances are non-binding,
00:46though there is a move in Congress to see them pass into law.
