00:01I
02:32My name's May and I'm eight years old and I'm a student at School of American Ballet.
02:44I like the movement of the music best about ballet.
02:48Well, if I'm really into it, then I feel like I'm like flying through a bird.
02:53When I first started at the School of American Ballet, I was very excited but then nervous
02:59at the same time because I hardly knew anybody.
03:07I didn't know much about the scroll down, but it led me to a lot of new things.
03:12After six months, I felt like I knew the place pretty well when I met more friends.
03:26In the morning, we have to remember to pack up my ballet stuff.
03:30This is my dog, Joy.
03:32This is my dog, Joy. She loves to take the kids.
03:36I do go to regular school.
03:52My favorite things to do at school are art, reading, and writing.
03:56This is a fox mask I made in school for a play during the day.
04:02I look forward to the end of the day so I can go to ballet.
04:06I think the most important part of ballet class is when the teacher corrects me if I do something
04:11wrong because then I'll learn how to do it correctly.
04:14I think there's different ways in teaching children.
04:17I think physically understanding the process is important, but also musically.
04:21A lot of the times, the rhythm reaches a child a lot faster than the physicality if somebody's
04:27more intellectually inclined or more physically inclined.
04:29So if I'm not reaching a kid one way, I flip around and say, hey, what about this?
04:34I started dancing when I was 13 years old, which is actually kind of late for a dancer.
04:40The age children should start ballet should be about eight years old.
04:45Teaching ballet makes me feel expressive.
04:48I feel like I get a lot of commitment out of the kids, and also they learn a lot.
04:53It's very enjoyable for me.
04:55The rules are always the same, but in terms of getting somebody to go forward and learning
04:59a little bit faster and being happy in a situation, we deal with each kid individually.
05:04And you can really tell if a child is not excelling because they're unhappy or it's too strict.
05:09I usually just smile at the child or I put my hand on them and ensure them that they're
05:13going in the right direction.
05:17My name is Regina Sobel.
05:19I'm 12 years old, and I'm a dancer at the School of American Ballet.
05:22I started dancing when I was about five years old.
05:25I wanted to become a ballet dancer because I love the music and the movement, and my sister
05:30did it when she was little, and I loved her so much, and I wanted to do everything she did.
05:35My name is Jan Burkhard.
05:37I'm 13 years old.
05:38I've been dancing for about 11 years, and I dance at the School of American Ballet.
05:44Hi, my name is Janelle Nancy, and I'm 12 years old.
05:48I started dancing when I was three.
05:52My mom took me to many ballets, and I saw dancers, and I wanted to be like them and wear
05:57tutus and wear pointe shoes and just look pretty.
06:04I auditioned for the School of American Ballet when I was nine years old.
06:07I was extremely nervous, and I couldn't believe what I was doing, and that I didn't think I'd
06:13probably get in, but eventually I kind of got enough confidence to really think that maybe
06:18I did have a chance.
06:19I knew that I was going to make a lot of friends and have famous teachers and grow up to
06:24be a
06:24ballerina.
06:30I just wake up in the morning very early.
06:33This is my bedroom, and this is my little sister Lizzie.
06:38This is my little sister Lizzie.
06:40Lucky, I don't like it very much.
06:44I go to a public school in New Jersey, and my favorite subjects are science and math.
06:49A typical day for me would be getting up, taking a shower, preparing all my things for
06:55this school.
06:56I have algebra, algebra books, science, civics, or social studies.
07:03I have language arts.
07:06I have French, and I also have a creative arts class where we do wood and metal shots, and
07:14I have physical education.
07:25I have a little sister who also goes to School of American Ballet.
07:33I'm Jan's little sister.
07:35My name is Ojala, and I like to dance.
07:37I help my little sister by going over what she does in class.
07:42The advice I'd want to give to a little girl that wanted to be a dancer is to follow
07:46your heart and your dreams.
07:48Bye, dad.
07:49Bye, dad.
07:51Bye, Bella.
07:53Bye, Bella.
07:54Bye, mom.
07:56Getting all my work done is sometimes hard if I have a lot of it.
08:03I go straight to ballet class after school, so I have to pack my bag.
08:10Science is my favorite subject, and now I'm looking in a slide of a fly.
08:18My friends at my regular school think that it's really interesting that I actually dance
08:25with the New York City Ballet when I perform in front of people.
08:29They're really happy for me.
08:31They always say, oh, you're so good.
08:33They try and come and see.
08:39If I couldn't be a ballerina, I'd want to go to college and study medicine.
08:49My favorite thing to do in regular school would probably be to work in the wood shop.
08:57We're going to be making a stool.
08:58The most exciting thing about being a ballet dancer is knowing that this is a really big
09:04dream of a lot of young girls.
09:07I live on Long Island with my mom, dad, sister, cat, and dog.
09:14I think my parents feel that I should just follow whatever I want to do, and they definitely
09:22sacrifice a lot of their time to bring me into the city and to classes.
09:26My favorite subject is when I go to SAE, I do a regular day of school, except I miss the
09:31last period.
09:32I have to leave early to make the train.
09:35My friends at regular school are nice, and they understand, but they don't always get
09:41what it takes to be a dancer.
09:43And at ballet, everybody understands what you're doing.
09:51My favorite subject in school is probably English, because I love to write, but I also like
09:58orchestra.
09:58I play the violin.
10:04I have to do my hair on the train, because I don't have time before class.
10:11At the end of the day, my mom picks me up, and I go in the car, and we go
10:16off to New York
10:17City.
10:34Every week, I take five classes, four technique, and one is a point class.
10:47It's definitely like a family, being at the ballet school, because you really get to know
10:53a lot of the people and the kids there, and you get very close as time goes on.
11:04My name is Cheryl Ware, and I'm a teacher at the School of American Ballet.
11:08I was a performer with New York City Ballet before I became a teacher.
11:11I teach the second divisions, and the fifth division, girls, the second division is usually
11:17the ages between 9 and 10, and in the fifth division, it could range from 12 to 14.
11:22I became a teacher because I love to dance, and it brought me so much joy.
11:30It's my pleasure to be able to teach it, and have the opportunity to teach it at the school.
11:35It's a lot of work, but it's a wonderful thing.
11:42They have to be able to be highly focused at a very early age.
11:46They have to want to focus.
11:48They have to be extremely patient, because it takes so many years to develop physically.
11:53It takes a long time for the muscles to develop.
12:16The most exciting thing about working with young girls is that they're so spontaneous and so honest.
12:25The hardest part of dance class is being able to focus, because your friends are there.
12:31They may distract you a little bit.
12:37Yeah, a lot of the teachers at SAV are strict, because they want us to focus.
12:41They don't want us goofing off in class.
12:44So, they want us to pay attention.
12:51My favorite part of ballet class is centered, when we get to do all the things from bar in the
12:59center.
13:00I practice my balance, because at the bar, you hold on to the bar, and so you're not really balancing.
13:07And I usually try to focus on what I'm doing, and you're able to relax.
13:13You just have to listen to the music and forget what else is going on.
13:16I listen to the music.
13:20I just feel what I hear.
13:24It makes me really happy.
13:32My name's Aisha, and I'm a dancer with the New York City Ballet.
13:36I've been in the company for five years.
13:38I'm still a core dancer.
13:40I started studying dance altogether at the age of five,
13:44and I started studying ballet when I was about 11.
13:51The hardest thing about being part of the New York City Ballet, I would have to say, are the hours.
13:56We put in a lot of hours, and there's a lot of ballets that we have to learn.
14:20We start off 10.30 to 12.00, we have class.
14:23That's warm-up technique class to prepare our bodies for the day.
14:28After that, we have rehearsals.
14:32Emotionally, it's very rewarding.
14:34Ballet is something that, when you start off, it's a passion.
14:38To dance and to perform every night, I'm able to feel that passion that I have inside.
14:47When I first auditioned for the School of American Ballet, I was pretty naive.
14:51My family was ecstatic when I joined.
14:53And even getting into the school, that was enough for them.
14:56Because as a young girl, you realize that this may, you know, determine my dream.
15:03My dream is to become a famous ballerina with New York City Ballet,
15:08and to be a principal, and do all the main roles in all the ballets.
15:13My biggest, wildest dream was to be a principal dancer in New York City Ballet.
15:17My dream is to be a principal dancer in a great company,
15:23and to just be in, like, all the things that I've wanted to do.
15:28Well, I feel, when I watch the principal dancers and the grown-ups,
15:32that when I grow up, that I want to be exactly like that.
15:58Living in the School of American Ballet dormitories was a great experience.
16:02I lived there for three summers and two full years.
16:08I think it's an excellent opportunity because you have a lot of other dancers around you
16:13constantly inspiring one another, motivating one another.
16:30Well, this is the SEB dorms, and this is where you stay when you become a student of the school.
16:35I stayed here from about the age of 14 to, I'd say, about 18.
16:40And let's just say it's been a long time since I've been in one of these rooms.
16:44But it brings back a lot of good memories.
17:14I love to collect my favorite dancer's shoes.
17:19And these shoes belong to the person I really want to dance like when I get older, Maria Kraski.
17:28I'm Maria Kraski, I'm 24, and I'm a principal dancer with the New Mexico Ballet.
17:38I started ballet when I was five years old at the local YMCA.
17:46My older sister was dancing, and I used to try on her ballet clothes all the time and run around
17:52the house.
17:52And my mother decided to start me in ballet classes.
18:02I moved to New York when I was 16 from Grand Rapids, Michigan.
18:14I lived in the dormitory above the School of American Ballet.
18:18My parents were a little cautious about sending me there at first.
18:20But once they realized that food and dancing and sleeping were all in the same building, they were very happy
18:27about that.
18:28I had auditioned for a lot of different places, and this was the place I wanted to be.
18:36Before class, I stretch.
18:38I make sure my calves are stretched out.
18:40I try to get as limber as possible before class starts and warm up the feet.
18:52When I did move here, I found that I made lots of good friends, friends that I still have.
19:11They have to look after a lot of dancers, and it's hard to give individual attention to each person and
19:16encourage them.
19:16But I think, you know, you kind of find your way.
19:19The costumes are a very important part of the ballet.
19:23Just, it's part of the whole preparation of getting yourself in the right emotion for the particular ballet you're doing.
20:03It's definitely a great place to dress up because you get to wear all different types of costumes and you
20:10get to put makeup on and it's a lot of fun.
20:13When I was little, I loved to play dress up, and I would walk around the house and do a
20:18fashion show for my parents.
20:20And now, I'm always on stage, so I get fitted for my costume.
20:25And I just love wearing a costume that's all bright colored and that has jewels on it.
20:31I wear my red leotard every day for ballet class because that's the color that we have to wear.
20:42For certain costumes, you're dressed as a princess, and it just gets you in that mood, in that feeling of
20:47being a princess.
20:52In every season, there'll be a new set of ballets that we do, and I get very excited because it's
20:58a different repertory that I can perform and broaden my horizons.
21:04My first ballet was the Nutcracker, and the roles that I played in it were a party scene girl at
21:12the beginning and a Christmas angel in the second act.
21:16When I'm in a performance, I feel really excited, but then I get nervous if I look at the audience.
21:22So I don't look at the audience, I pretend it's not there, and it's just a rehearsal, and I just
21:28do my part.
21:29Usually, the little girls get nervous on stage, so I like to give them advice, like, don't get nervous, and
21:36just pretend it's a rehearsal, and be yourself.
21:41I've been in Nutcracker, Maltartiana, Circus Polka, Midsummer Night's Dream, Sun the Ballet, Sleeping Beauty, and Coppelia.
21:56I've been in Garland Waltz, which is in Sleeping Beauty, and I've been in Nutcracker.
22:05In Midsummer Night's Dream, we wear, like, costumes that look like bugs, like, they're supposed to look like imaginary bugs.
22:12When I'm backstage behind the curtain, and right before I'm going on, I worry about falling or sneezing, or my
22:19costume getting caught on some other costume.
22:22I had a friend once, in Midsummer Night's Dream, who was next to the curtain, and the scenery, and the
22:31scenery was netted, and her hat got stuck to the scenery.
22:36Going on tour is great. I've seen so many parts of the world that I would never have seen if
22:40I wasn't with a company.
22:41I mean, we've been to Paris, we've been to Australia, we've been to Taiwan and Korea.
22:47The Peter Martins is great. Working in the studio with him while he's choreographing is very exciting, he's very energetic,
22:53and he's full of inspiration.
22:55He wants to use you to the best of your ability, and ideas flow out of him. It's a lot
23:00of fun.
23:01This year I was very lucky because I was chosen to be on the poster for the campaign of the
23:05New York City Valley's 2001 season.
23:11I really do like the poster. It almost looks like I'm on stage. It's great.
23:21Before I started performance, when I put makeup on, it's really fun because usually girls my age don't usually, every
23:31day or every other day, get to put on makeup except on Halloween.
23:36Putting on makeup is a lot of fun.
23:38Some lipstick, blush, and some eyeshadow.
23:42And you transform yourself into a ballerina.
23:51I like getting made up for performances. I think it's the little girl inside of us all.
24:04In my ballet bag, I carry lots of different things.
24:07In my ballet bag, I keep my hairspray and my brush.
24:11This is my homework folder.
24:13My ballet shoes.
24:14This is an extra leotard.
24:17My white shoes.
24:18This is an extra pair of tights.
24:20My hair pieces.
24:21This is peppy.
24:23This is peppy.
24:23My tights.
24:24In my ballet bag, there's a lot of things.
24:28My money.
24:29This is really.
24:30My band-aids.
24:31These are my hair brushes.
24:33And foam tape for my toes when they get wetter.
24:36I have masking tape, which we use to tape our toes.
24:38Extra tights.
24:40Extra leotard.
24:41This is a pencil and a pen to do my homework.
24:44Extra pair of ballet slippers.
24:45I have different shoes.
24:46Some are harder.
24:47Some are softer.
24:48Rubber bands.
24:50Oops.
24:51And then I have a little zipper bag, which I keep little band-aids and maybe tape in there to
24:56tape my toes.
24:57These are bobby pins.
24:58My bobby pins.
24:59Hair pins.
25:01Clips.
25:02Hair nuts.
25:03Scrunchies.
25:04And hair elastics.
25:05These are rubber bands.
25:06Hair spring gel.
25:08And my good luck rock that says Scrunchy.
25:14This isn't just for the girls.
25:17Boys do class as well.
25:53wicked boy so don't hurt in the eye.
25:58The theater is probably for both their могу.
25:59It's not just as close as close.
25:59And he is printed by the festival.
25:59Plenty of minutes when you have to cleave out do the nouveau band.
26:00It happens to be scored, so like John Ether.
26:01So now you're getting out of class.
26:02Sometimes you might not turn off Zuships and dijo the SteelS
26:04but you might look at the competitions as well.
26:05I have a wonder of Ky cada qualification coming from the other times.
26:08And it will still stay at the party's quy이는.
27:10What I like to do is wet them before every class so they mold to my feet and to break
27:16in the box a little bit.
27:18I like to bend the arch a little bit, not too much to break the shoe.
27:22There's some ballets you have to have it last, the whole entire ballet.
27:26You have to have a nice, solid shoe.
27:28So if you break it too much, then after the first five minutes, you're gone.
27:32I cut off the tip of the toe shoe, and then I usually put a little glue in the tip
27:36to
27:36keep the shoe harder and to last a little bit longer.
27:40I also try to make the shoe form a little bit better to my foot, so when I put my
27:44foot
27:44in, it's not so scrunched in there.
27:46And I usually scrape the bottom of the shoe, and then when I actually put the shoe on,
27:51I go over to the rosin box, and I put a lot of rosin on so I don't slip.
27:57I feel more passionate now than when I was a little girl.
28:01I think the more I perform, the more passionate I get about it.
28:07When I see little girls, I remember the times when I was little and wanting to be a dancer,
28:11and, you know, when they see me, they look up at me, and I guess I am someone they look
28:17up to.
28:18It's weird, because I never thought I would be that person.
28:20When I go on point, I really love it, and I feel more graceful when I go on point, and
28:27I love being up high.
28:29I couldn't wait to be on point, and that maybe one day I'll be dancing in point shoes on stage.
28:34It's nice to be, like, high, and you're on your toes, and it's just relaxing.
28:46And there's so many different ballets, and I love them all in so many different ways.
28:51My advice to a little girl who wants to start studying ballet is to just remember the passion
28:56that she has.
28:58Be determined, and just continue following your dreams.
29:14Performing for an audience is the best thing to me.
29:17It's the most exciting thing.
29:18You can go out on stage and do whatever your heart tells you to do.
29:22Listen to the music, and just be yourself.
29:25And it's a different part of you that is coming alive and exciting people out in the audience
29:30and touching people, and it's wonderful.
30:57Oh, yeah.
31:30Oh, yeah.
31:57Oh, yeah.
32:03Oh, yeah.
32:32Oh, yeah.
32:35Oh, yeah.
