00:27So, it's just afternoon today.
00:29A gentleman parked in the 100 block of Maryland Avenue in a white Mercedes SUV.
00:36He exited the vehicle.
00:38He exited the vehicle with a shotgun and began running towards the Capitol up the walkway just behind me.
00:45This just in, a potentially deadly security breach at the heart of American democracy, stopped just in time.
00:54An 18-year-old man wearing a tactical vest and carrying a loaded shotgun charged toward the U.S. Capitol
01:02on Tuesday, triggering an immediate law enforcement response.
01:07According to U.S. Capitol Police, the suspect has been identified as Carter Camacho of Smyrna, Georgia.
01:14Authorities say he acted alone, and investigators are now working to determine his motive.
01:20Police Chief Michael Sullivan said Camacho drove a white Mercedes SUV near the Capitol complex before exiting and running toward
01:28the building, armed with a loaded shotgun and additional rounds of ammunition.
01:34Officers stationed at the Capitol quickly intercepted him, drew their weapons, and ordered him to drop the gun and get
01:40on the ground.
01:41In a critical moment that may have prevented tragedy, Camacho complied and was taken into custody without shots being fired.
01:49Chief Sullivan later stressed the seriousness of the situation, saying,
01:56Police say the suspect was wearing a tactical vest and tactical gloves.
02:00Inside his vehicle, authorities found a Kevlar helmet and a gas mask, equipment suggesting preparation.
02:07The SUV was discovered parked in front of the U.S. Botanic Garden, just steps from the Capitol, and officials
02:13confirmed the vehicle was not registered in his name.
02:16Camacho now faces multiple charges, including carrying a rifle without a license, possession of an unregistered firearm and ammunition, and
02:23unlawful activities.
02:24Authorities say he was not previously known to Capitol Police.
02:28Law enforcement temporarily shut down traffic and warned the public to avoid the area during the incident.
02:33The Capitol was quieter than usual Tuesday, with lawmakers away from Washington on a scheduled recess, a factor that may
02:39have reduced potential risk inside the building.
02:40Still, the image of an armadermit of a jewel in tactical gear charging toward the Capitol is deeply unsettling.
02:46Investigators are now focused on one central question.
02:48Why?
02:49For now, officials say the threat was neutralized swiftly, but the incident highlights the ongoing security challenges facing one of
02:55the most protected buildings in the country.
02:56We'll continue to follow this developing story.
