00:02welcome and happy holidays from 2k sports it's time for nba action with stan van gundy and greg
00:10anthony and now we will force on our sideline i'm kevin harlan almost halfway through the season
00:16let's check out the standings in the east you take a look at the pistons holding on a second
00:21spot in the conference a great season for them so far a couple spots below and right now for the
00:26pistons they've been on a tremendous run this season all the pieces were in place coming into
00:33the year and they haven't missed a beat great chemistry great coaching and potential to do
00:39some great things in the postseason yeah no one has taken them lightly this is a team with everything
00:45you really need to make some noise in the playoffs and now the opening lineup for detroit harris steps
00:53in at the four with durin at the center spot the wing pair we'll see going is going to be
00:58ivy and
00:59thompson and it's cunningham in at the one we've got keon ellis tory and prince is out there with
01:05bayton watson then there's andre drummond and it's the recipe in at the point line and stan talking
01:11about this matchup for a second when it comes to moving the ball these two teams have to be
01:17considered two of the very best at it couldn't agree more kevin both of these groups very
01:22selfless got to give a lot of credit to these coaching staffs for getting their guys to buy in
01:27on a team first mentality that makes for some tremendous team chemistry and by the way it wins
01:35a lot of games too and let's go to the sideline here's alan thanks i caught up with the home
01:40team's
01:40head coach much of our discussion centered around kate cunningham he said that's their catalyst they
01:46look to him to control the pace to read the defense and to make the right basketball play
01:51which he usually does he is very tough to neutralize back to you kevin all right ali thanks
01:57here's watson after the basket by detroit and watson slams it in well he can play the four because he
02:05gets off the ground so well the pistons have gone two or three here to start out the game
02:11and durin slams it in how much power from jalen durin goodness so for the pistons their last game a
02:21win
02:21against the clippers fouled in the active shooting gets the bucket anyway so a three-point play chance
02:27for him well early in this game they've made one good play after another first trip to the free
02:33throw line for him tonight
02:37and that one falls for prince and so just over a minute and a half played
02:46here's cunningham prince with the defensive effort well give credit to the defense for cutting him
02:52off normally that'd be easy points for him at the rim and the pistons combining veteran shooting stand
02:58with their young core and it's been a winning recipe yeah they've given kate cunningham room to operate
03:04along with jalen durin and sar thompson so much athleticism to attack that newfound state you know
03:13greg after struggling with injuries to start his nba career kate cunningham is figuring it out and the
03:19former number one overall pick in 21 last season his first all-star appearance and he's only getting
03:27started you know stan when you talk about the skill set kate cunningham possesses what impresses
03:33you most i think a couple of things kevin number one is poise is outstanding this guy never gets
03:40bothered by anything that happens in a game by any type of adversity he's just going to come back with
03:47the same mindset uh on the next play and also his shooting has improved so much that you've now got
03:55to defend him honestly on the perimeter and that sets up the rest of his game and durin slams it
04:02in
04:03well physical play by durin at the rim which doesn't allow much room for interference
04:13well you like how aggressive he is making a play at the rim against glenn yeah showing absolutely zero
04:22fear as he goes right after the bigger defender a nice shot by harris you know harris blossomed into
04:30a stretch big putting tons of work into his three-point stroke prince outside
04:38pass to watson at the elbow it's drummond to the inside over to the wing six to shoot
04:49now here's prince over thompson it's hauled in by harris yeah you expect him to make those good look
04:58just couldn't find the mark ivy it's tipped and they'll keep possession and it's in there harris has
05:05got five points so far gone five of eight from the field shooting over 62 percent watson finds ellis
05:18pass to watson
05:21kicks it out to ellis baseline jumper and that one comes up a bit short well when they're
05:27playing off you you have to make them pay and he could here's cunningham it's drummond with the
05:34rebound being 56 percent in this first quarter not standing start for this offense
05:42a shot by thompson and no one's around it's good only a few seconds into the shot clock and for

05:49his jump shooting is still a work in progress golesby the best to prince and the layup's good off the

05:57seven points in the game well it sure didn't take him much time to heat up aggressive start
06:06now here's ivy what a tremendous game he played against the clippers
06:11ah missed opportunity he's just got to shake that one off ellis dishes to prince

06:29cunningham passes to idon puts it up from 12 it's drummond with the rebound
06:36gone six of ten from the field in this ball game and here's ellis for three
06:41durin pulls it in durin's got four rebounds now tonight
06:48here's cunningham the shot goes in first of the night he's one for three to start the game
06:54nice job getting inside and executing i like seeing cunningham be aggressive around the basket
07:04so it's both teams making substitutions here it seems like every shot these guys have been putting
07:10up has been going in this month's top shooters rui hatchimura on top second andre drummond
07:18both of these guys have been shooting with tremendous efficiency as the month has gone on i don't know
07:25who's going to outdo who golesby the best to drummond here's golesby to the middle here's prince
07:33score the basket his fourth he's only missed one of his five shots tonight

07:42cunningham passes to harris cunningham sets a screen for harris

07:50and robinson wide open he shoots knocks down the three balls
07:54robinson not afraid to let it fly from deep you gotta get out on him
08:01and here is hatchimura mitchell kicks to hatchimura back to mitchell puts up a three good for the
08:10basket starting off one for one with that shot both teams running perimeter oriented plays that are
08:17working well you know it's become a three-point shooting league team's shooting a steady diet from
08:24outside and he gets contact and the whistle on the shot two shots coming up kate cunningham is a terrific
08:31all-around player his scoring passing and rebounding are a huge lift for this team
08:38and he can't get the first one a different look here for detroit
08:42stewart checked in for durin and karis lavert subbed in for harris
08:50and the second free throw good well it's his heart and leadership that set cunningham apart
08:56he's never given you less than a hundred percent and he's always playing to win
09:01now here's prince nine points in the game so far golesby the best to mitchell
09:08to the right side shot clock at five
09:14two free throws coming up and they call the shooting foul
09:18it's on ron holland i'll tell you what he earned his money on that foul
09:23and a chance for just a second to check out the scoring breakdown for detroit well their game
09:28plan has been very effective so far they're working the ball inside putting constant pressure on the
09:34defense and another thing coach will be thrilled with the assist numbers spreading the wealth and
09:40creating some offensive opportunities javonte green he's checked in for detroit well he's been very
09:47good at the line and we all know free throws can make or break you in the end
09:54lover with a wide open look hakimura grabs the miss
09:58drawn one or two from long range in the first quarter and drummond kicks to mitchell shoots
10:05and he gets it to go hitting off the back of the rim
10:08mitchell's got seven points in the game well he can beat you in a lot of ways
10:13very challenging to defend the shot's good and the pistons lead by two and gotta push
10:21the bird out of that area because he's very comfortable looking to score from there
10:25here's gillespie that one good for two a little artistry in the painted area converting against
10:33the size yeah he didn't let the defense effect in there he just kept his focus
10:40and the dunk by stewart well he's a bit of an undersized center however his leaping ability can
10:49certainly mask that yep that one goes and guys they continue to put a lot of pressure
10:55on the interior defenders with their work down low and so the first quarter comes to a close
11:01both teams scoring well but it's all tied up and we'll get things started in the second quarter when we
11:17return
11:19and we hope you're enjoying the game both teams tonight keeping things pretty even so far in the
11:23scoreboard guys what's your take on the home team so far boy that their offense looks really good when
11:30everyone's in sync terrific first quarter yeah they've looked sharp early on with their offense
11:36getting good chances and converting what they've taken here's sasser and detroit looking at who they've
11:45got they've got robinson holland is out there with isaiah stewart then there's paris lavert and it's sasser
11:53in at the point now here's herder
11:58Mitchell finds hatchimura that doesn't go in at a chance though to take the lead
12:06lets it go from deep sasser can't hit
12:11thing has been just fantastic around 65 percent tonight getting exactly what they want when they want
12:17and herder gets it to go well look her has the size to do damage in there that time converting
12:25through contact here's sasser off target from three-point range well that's a shot the defense
12:32felt like they could live with that it worked out for him that time go into the rack with energy
12:38this is a d afraid to cut him off yeah gotta chalk that one up to some shaky defender and
12:44with the
12:44score as close as it is these are the opportunities you truly can't allow here's sasser
12:53out to the right wing launches a three and the three ball is good sasser's got himself going with
12:59the triple his first basket of the game
13:03mitchell passes to nagy back to mitchell here's nagy guarded by stewart
13:10pass to hatchimura now hurt her on the wing james shoots over lavert oh and that one had the right
13:19spit on it and it is good james has got his first basket of the night and so the timeout

13:27bickerstaff he made the decision to huddle up with his guys and talk about strategy
13:37several teams changing it up here
13:40now a chance to take a look at some numbers for jayden ivy and the biggest takeaway when you look
13:46at his numbers is how good his three-point shooting has been the past five games he's
13:51finding the open spots on the perimeter and when he's getting good looks boy he is not missing pistons
13:58trailed by three
14:03and here in the second two minutes gone by
14:08catch humor against stewart
14:12driving inside his second shot goes in off to a good start two for two well that's some good defense
14:18inside just a better play by stewart gillespie the best who else he gets it in there and ga a
14:27lot of
14:27the best defensive teams in the league have some stout shown looks they can go to where do those in
14:33a game
14:34come in handy i mean often it's a way of challenging opponents to make perimeter shots but also
14:41you want to show different looks just to kind of disrupt the rhythm of a team's offensive flow

14:56and for those of you just joining us in the second quarter with about three minutes gone by
15:02pass to cunningham that's in coming off the assist from thompson
15:07cunningham's got his second basket of the night well that's where cunningham does his best work
15:11from the free throw line down watson finds ellis over ivy ellis that's good
15:18and 10 of their last 12 coming off assist to the paint here's ivy

15:30it's rebounded by herder
15:37misses that one he's made one and missed two this game so far cunningham for three
15:44that ball's off target it's his third miss he's made two shots from the field
15:51free throw line jump shot and he sinks that one in the back of the rim on the way in
15:57curter's got his second basket of the game
16:03and here's cunningham he's got six thompson
16:06ivy no one around him
16:08detroit no good that time either going six and nine in the second quarter some good work from the field
16:14and that one's good ellis fantastic ball movement they're picking them apart
16:20with their passing and so the timeout here by jb bickerstatt coach is going to talk some
16:26things over with the team might be seeing something to adjust
16:35both teams will make substitutions these players have been vacuums on the boards recently leading
16:42the league in rebounding the past month second andre drummond he must be spending a lot of time
16:47in the weight room because he's shown such strength under the basket
17:03ivy passes to thompson here's during on beyond the art
17:09the kick out to cunningham tips it and during is right there
17:15during's got 10 points in the game and there's a pattern starting to take shape here they're working
17:21it inside and getting good shots from close range
17:27gillespie that's good the chemistry has been terrific really impressed with their offensive
17:33execution pistons trailed by four now you talk about size coach strength and bounce
17:39taylan duran drawing comparisons now to a young dwight howard yeah he certainly is kevin and look
17:46i like to be careful when we're making those kind of comparisons with a young player in a hall of
17:54famer like white howard but there are similarities with the athleticism and the relentless approach
18:01to defense and rebound now here's hyden he provides a good amount of offense for the team averaging
18:09around 11 and a half points a game no doubt he's struggling right now from the field let's see
18:14if he can get it going this quarter here's ellis beyond the arc trains it from beyond the arc
18:23gillespie has got five points now in the quarter that's the kind of team that you're not going to
18:28find success with guys they've got to get a hand in the face harris's shot is good strong response by
18:35the veteran harris coming back with his own three making a statement doing it
18:47and a quick look at the numbers for ellis averaging about 15 points five assists and two rebounds
18:54he's been making the right decisions and letting the game come to him solid play all around well he's
19:01found his group he isn't forcing anything and he's making the most of his chances being nearly 70 percent
19:09from the four they are putting on a clinic offensively out left of the wing
19:17and stolen by thompson inside here's cunningham and cunningham with the slam
19:24well look at him get up kate has some hops now cunningham's gone four of eight from the four 50
19:31percent of the night ellis finds watson from outside the arc good and the assist goes to ellis
19:38watson's got his third basket of the night the assist totals kevin just continue to grow they're
19:44way ahead in that category ball movement has been flawless that's his third three-pointer in this game
19:51and two of those came in the second so he might be heating up here's gillespie following the three
19:58by the troll and good that time and i'll bet his percentage is pretty high from that range
20:07here's cunningham he scores his fifth field goal he's taking nine shots to get those five
20:12yeah he's picking it up here in the second quarter after a slow start gillespie the pass to ellis
20:22over ivy ellis can't get it to go the shot's there for him and he's got to take it i
20:28don't care
20:28if he doesn't convert that's a shot he has to continue to take over time that pull-up jumper
20:35has become a dependable shot for cunningham and that's big for his game kicks it out to ellis
20:42and it's off from three-point range and it's cunningham with the ball for the pistons they come
20:49into this having outplayed the clippers last game yeah i think the perimeter game is what helped him
20:54in that one consistent from out beyond the arc yeah and what the heck were you supposed to do to
21:00stop
21:00him bucket after bucket from deep white is showing and folks he did not luck into that one even just
21:08where he wanted to be to grab that backboard well that's just a careless pass he's lucky that was just
21:14deflected and not picked off from t palace and no luck with that time on the buzzer beater and so
21:23it's kate cunningham making things happen for the detroit pistons he got to double digits for the quarter
21:29with 10 points total back right after this
21:51welcome everybody and as we start to work our way through the season a sneak peek at the rookie of
21:57the year race acclimating to the league is not that easy these guys are already accepting the
22:04challenges and the rigors of the nba and they're crushing it i'm surprised yeah i'm curious to see
22:09which rookie might take even another step and separate himself from the pack we love to see this
22:16kind of chemistry it's like our chemistry on the set everyone knows this ring you know what ernie for
22:22once i can't disagree with jack it feels good to be the king i can't run away from this conversation
22:29fast
22:30enough
22:34and that concludes halftime now time to send it over to kevin harlan as the game's about to resume
22:54and as we get into this third quarter as we've seen so far neither team able to create much
22:59separation on the scoreboard yet you look at kate cunningham in this game he's been everywhere
23:05his play so far is what fans love about him he has gone right at the defense time and time
23:12again yeah
23:12he hasn't been settling he's getting to the rim and that's him at his best
23:28and detroit has possession they lead by four following this one they get to host the cavaliers
23:34that game is the first and last of their homestead tory and prince is out there with bayton watson
23:40then there's andre drummond then it's ellis and it's gillespie in at the one spot
23:46gone three to six tonight when they've let it fly from downtown and for the pistons the forwards are
23:53topsy and harris at the guard spots we'll see cunningham and ivy and it's durin in at the five down
23:59low
24:00and durin slams it in as the league continues to grow this is just heady sound basketball well
24:08that third quarter is when you want to increase your lead really building it up before that final
24:14quarter well that's part of his role with great size they rely on him to help control the board
24:21count it and now it's a 10-point piston lead and don't look now but they're starting
24:27to extend this lead well look we've seen that no lead is safe these days you got to keep scoring
24:34and extending that margin at halftime break didn't seem to do them any favors starting off the second
24:41half with three straight misses well that one didn't fall but otherwise they've been excellent
24:46shooting the ball to start this half friends can't hit yeah that's a missed opportunity great look
24:53just couldn't finish got a hand on it and that's out of bounds detroit will retain possession

25:21just a little over 90 seconds gone in the third quarter cunningham's shot is off
25:27going 0-2 from deep to start things here in the second half right wing drummond passes to gillespie
25:34drains the 19 footer gillespie has got 13 and they get one now one of five here hit the third

25:47nice to durin and it's sent back by drummond
25:52a high motor keeps drummond engaged defensively he doesn't want to let any shots go in strong move
26:00to the 10 trying to get his guys going hard not to get motivated ga right when your teammate makes
26:07that kind of play well that's exactly what's needed when you're trying to turn things around
26:12harris good and they're beginning to just flat out fall apart defensively right now especially
26:19on the interior
26:21pass to watson shoots shot goes down very quick possession right there watson's got four points
26:30now in the quarter
26:34cunningham passes to harris
26:39second half of play and we're three minutes into the third here oh the block shot grabs it out of
26:45the air
26:48drummond dishes to watson that one drops for him and now just a four-point detroit lead
26:56and he's having quite the quarter converting at a really high percentage and that's 10 straight
27:02points in the paint the defense nowhere to be found
27:15now we have a chance to see the teams that have been the nba's best three-point shooters this month
27:20well look they've been great over the last month from three that is so important for their offense
27:26making threes opens up the entire floor
27:32jaws under three and a half minutes played here in the third quarter
27:37gillespie the pass to prince
27:40tires from deep that's in that's his fifth field goal he's shooting a hot 71 percent five for seven
27:49outside robinson on the wayne thompson
27:54harris outside
27:56harris missing again after draining three triples in the first half he doesn't have any in the second
28:03half i know he's disappointed but he needs to remain aggressive that one's in there but it certainly
28:10just cut down to just one on the basket from prince i'll tell you we're right in this we'll see
28:16if they
28:17can maintain momentum yeah taking away the lead is never easy but a rally like this is how you do
28:24it
28:24and so the timeout here by jb bickerstedt coach needs a moment it's all things over detroit making a
28:32switcher ivy's checked in
28:41here's ivy and we're going courtside for a report on jayden ivy
28:46ali how is he hi guys the head athletic trainer for detroit provided some information
28:51the bad news is he has a sprained ankle and they're hoping that the swelling will go down
28:56we know he doesn't want to be sidelined and the staff has already given him the green light
29:00typically a short recovery window so with any luck it will not be slowing him down guys all right ali
29:06thanks for that yeah we put so much effort into injury prevention in the nba but injuries are still
29:15going to happen that's just the unfortunate part of the game distance leading by three
29:21bounce pass from ivy robinson for three it's drummond with the rebound and on an open look
29:27like that he's very gifted at making the weak coverage pay and duncan robinson one of the more
29:33efficient three-point marksman coach in this league yeah look kevin duncan robinson built his game
29:39around his three-point shooting and the threat of the three has drawn more defensive attention and
29:48duncan robinson has learned to make plays for other people based on the defense that he sees a much
29:57improved all-around basketball and a chance to catch up on some numbers here scoring breakdown for detroit
30:05well they've clearly been focused on getting the ball inside and up to this point the defense has not
30:11had an answer and they've also forced a lot of turnovers capitalizing and turning those turnovers
30:17into points way to get after it now here is robinson he averages about five points a game and not
30:25allowing the shooter even an inch of breathing room on that one there's no air space there whatsoever
30:32that's as close as you can get without the battle gets the three-pointer default and it's now only a
30:39one-point piston lead and he simply makes them pay for the lackluster defense here is outside

30:51over prince thompson with the bucket thompson's got his second basket of the night yeah developing
30:58consistency with the jump shot has been asar thompson's number one priority
31:08a different look here for detroit stuart checked in for harris holland
31:13comes in for thompson and kara slivert subbed in for jayden ivy
31:24and so here's the home team
31:28mitchell kicks to hachimura good and the assist goes to mitchell you have to push hachimura out of
31:35there if you're the defense he's a real problem on the interior
31:41durin up top pistons passing it around robinson for three rebounded by holmes
31:48and the great shooters know when they've got enough opening to go for the three i didn't think it was
31:53a
31:53bad choice on that possession now here is hachimura he's a good contributor to his team averaging about
32:00ten and a half points a game just five to shoot here's james uses the glass to finish the layup

32:08has got his second basket guys we're not through three quarters of play but six lead changes already
32:14in this one yeah competitive and i think we all can agree that we thought this would be the type
32:19of
32:19game that would come down to be now here is robinson gets it to go from beyond the arm
32:26robinson's got six points this is robinson at his best he can really do damage off the catch holmes
32:34passes to james and they come right back with their own three-pointer matching baskets from the
32:41perimeter and earmark of today's game yeah sometimes you get in a shootout like this
32:47but you just hope that you can get a stop first
32:53giants for it goes out of bounds that went off reverse
32:57big going in check in for jaylen durin number two
33:08on three of five with the long ball since entering the second half it's a four second
33:13differential between the shot clock and game clock james no good right there the defender clearly
33:20trying to inhibit a fast break i think that's a transition take foul and this is his first trip to
33:26the line tonight duncan robinson behind the lane at the line line one shot
33:42well robinson has heard a lot of criticism throughout the years but the numbers show
33:47he's one of the most prolific three-point shooters in league history
33:56cunningham with it he's got 14. count the basket as we approach the fourth quarter still anyone's
34:01ball game yeah neither team able to create much of a cushion holmes kicks to prince over robinson and
34:10it's prince that time on the assist by holmes prince has got seven points for the quarter third quarter
34:16comes to a close and a battle brings it to a tie and we'll have the start of the fourth
34:21quarter
34:21for you as soon as we get back from this short break
34:37and now let's go back to a play from earlier as we show you our state farm assist of the
34:42game
34:43yeah an easy choice tonight look at the precision on this pass put it on a platter form yeah that's
34:50high level playmaking he makes it look easy but it's not
34:57and with these teams locked in a very close contest this fourth quarter promises to be a good one
35:03achimura out there with kevin hurter then it's mitchell and gay is in at the center
35:09now here is lavert the kick out to cunningham the shape missile blows bucket is good and he'll have
35:18a chance at the line to make it a three-point play that's an aggressive play and a chance for
35:24cunningham
35:24to get three points the old-fashioned way
35:38and the home team has possession
35:42pass to hurter
35:45here's mitchell gets the bucket and the foul it's on ron holland and you want him taking
35:53big shots for you in big moments that one was as easy as it gets well with him
35:59he's dangerous because he's so confident he wants to deliver in these moments
36:06and it's cutting in with the ball for detroit

36:15achimura grabs the miss gone six of eleven when they've taken a three-point shot tonight
36:20fairly respectable the shot by mitchell no good yeah loose coverage by the defense but he just
36:27couldn't make them pay robinson kicks to holland
36:37rebound by mitchell that's not a bad shot at all it just didn't go in sometimes the process is right
36:43and you still get a bad result and the dunk by achimura and proving to be effective around the rim
36:51hachimura leaving no doubt about that one
36:58running him on the wing takes a three that's down the hatch not one more to his total that's nine

37:04shooting well they have leaned on him offensively with good reason efficiency will help you win a lot of games

37:17to the wing right side the 19-foot shot and it's gillespie missing
37:23detroit's gone one of two from three-point range here in the fourth

37:33pulls it from 20 rebound detroit
37:36holland's got his fifth rebound in this one
37:41here's laverne it's rebounded by naji well sometimes it's just not your night but despite
37:48his struggles they're ahead in the game that's good by mitchell time running low guys and uh
37:55somebody has got to win this one yeah well who knows we might need
37:58overtime in this one it's been that kind of a game
38:01and jb bickerstaff has called a timeout and that timeout by coach was carefully measured
38:08wanting to make sure that everybody is on the same page here andre drummond's checked in for naji
38:15and a switcher also for detroit tobias harris has checked in for duncan robinson
38:19let's check in now with our ally la force who's got a story for us ally jb bickerstaff had some
38:25words for his team over the break and coach had a very specific message for his guys he said quote

39:17tied up now for the piston well you know stuart really hustles whenever he's out there great energy
39:24on the glass here's trumman he's been up and in off the pretty assist and you don't want to allow
39:30too many of those short ones with the game right now in the boundary
