00:00Well, the American actor Robert Duvall has died. He was known for his roles in The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and
00:06many other films.
00:07He won an Oscar for Best Actor in 1984 for the film Tender Mercies.
00:11A statement issued on behalf of his wife said that he died peacefully at home in Virginia on Sunday, and
00:17he was 95 years old.
00:20We can cross now to freelance journalist Stephanie Martinez in Los Angeles.
00:23Stephanie, Robert Duvall had a long career. What can you tell us about his legacy?
00:30That's correct. Just to start, this has been a very gloomy day here in Los Angeles, literally and figuratively.
00:37Robert Duvall, he wasn't just an actor, he was a craftsman.
00:39We have to remember that he was part of a generation that reshaped American acting in the 1950s.
00:45He trained in New York alongside actors like Dustin Huffman and Gene Hackman, who we know passed away last year
00:51in 2025.
00:52They were young, they were struggling, sharing apartments, working odd jobs, and developing the psychological realism that would transform completely
01:00film acting for decades.
01:02Now, with Duvall's death at 95, it feels like we're nearing the closing of a remarkable era that helped redefine
01:08screen acting.
01:09But what truly set Duvall apart was his humility.
01:13He did not censor his life here in the craziness of Hollywood.
01:15Instead, he chose, as you said, a quiet farm in Virginia, the Plains, Virginia specifically.
01:21So as we learned throughout the years, this was an artist who cared more about the work than the fame
01:26itself.
01:27Well, given that impressive legacy, what has been the reaction to this sad news in Hollywood?
01:33Right now, we haven't had a lot of statements, but they are coming out.
01:37Recently, like you said, his wife, Luciana, said to the world he was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director,
01:43a storyteller.
01:44To her, he was simply everything.
01:46I saw right before coming here live, Katie Couric did say he was a fine actor, so many fantastic roles.
01:53Tender Mercies was her favorite.
01:55So as of a few minutes before also coming live, the cause of death was still unknown.
02:01However, as you mentioned, the wife did say that he passed away peacefully at home.
02:05And of course, more information and statements are expected throughout the day from across Hollywood, where many did consider him
02:11one of the greatest actors of his generation.
02:14Okay.
02:15Stephanie Martinez reporting, freelance journalist reporting for us on the death of Robert Duvall from Los Angeles.
02:20Stephanie, thanks so much.
