I consider this their first true duel. Without the mechanical problems with his Lotus, Senna stood a really good chance of fending off Prost and winning this Grand Prix.

00:00I think Williams and Kike is a very good chance to win, but I think my car is very good,
00:06the handling of my car is very good, we have a big problem, I think everybody has a big problem
00:10about the fuel consumption, so I think at the moment it's a little bit irrealistic to do a pronostic, but
00:17we are in a good shape anyway, we have to save a little bit of everything, tires, gearbox and fuel.
00:22I have no idea who is going to win, I hope we can do well, certainly Silverstone is a very
00:30high speed track, so it's very important to have a quick cut on the straights and on the fast corners.
00:47Ayrton Senna, right up alongside a brilliant start, taking the lead by passing Alain Prost and Kike Rosberg, one of
00:55the finest strong and off goes, yes he is.
00:59Let's look at it again as Prost comes under the bridge, moves to the right and is alongside Andrea de
01:05Cesaris' Ligier so that the Italian was unable to close the door.
01:11Prost had got the right line into the chicane and de Cesaris has to tuck in behind the wing of
01:16the Marlborough McLaren, but hats off to the Ligier team because with the advent of Gerard Larousse.
01:24The thing is going to be, well Prost having a look down the inside and he's made it, I was
01:30going to say that we might be having a repeat of the French Grand Prix when the prodigious straight line
01:37speed of the Williams Honda made it terribly difficult to pass, but Prost has done it really at the first
01:43attempt, he's gone inside Rosberg.
01:46And we're waiting for the rain with trepidation.
01:51I was talking to a couple of Australian friends this morning who could not believe that it could be so
01:56bright and sunny as it was and yet possibly rain in the afternoon.
02:01And I said, well I fear you may soon see and I fear that Ayrton Senna is soon going to
02:07have, I fear from his point of view, allow Prost on his gearbox because Senna has got to take a
02:12couple of tail enders now.
02:14And there we are 148.85 miles an hour as Prost comes through to complete lap 30 and lap 33
02:23is the half distance lap and the gap between Senna now as he goes into a new lap and Prost
02:31is down to 2.2 seconds.
02:34And Senna has got in front of him, Jan Lapite in the Ligier and Derek Warwick in the Renault to
02:40lap them.
02:41Yes, a very uncomfortable moment for Senna, he's come up on a gaggle of three slower cars just when he
02:48didn't need to because Prost is now beginning to loom in his mirrors.
02:53You get quite a good view in the mirrors of a Grand Prix car, it's pretty much like your own
02:59road car at home and driving on the normal road, so Senna will, every time he glances in his mirrors,
03:06will have a nasty, unpleasant experience in the Ligier road here.
03:09And really, they should have let Senna go and that's brought Prost right up to them.
03:19Yes, Senna got past Warwick, but Lapite was watching Warwick and I don't think saw Prost, Senna, and so there
03:27is the Brazilian and now is he going to get past Lapite into the chicane?
03:32And if he does, he takes his opportunity, lovely bit of passing, and that's given him a break, a small
03:39break, ahead of Alain Prost, who is still behind Lapite, but not for very much longer, because he's going to
03:45take it before he gets to the cops, and the gap is one and a half seconds.
03:50Lapite has bit busy with his own battle then, but as soon as he saw and realised that it was
03:56the leaders lapping him, he let both of them go, got well out of their way.
04:00He let Senna through before the chicane, he then waved Prost by as they went out of the chicane, but
04:06I was going to say the damage is done, but it's inevitable.
04:11And Prost has definitely been catching Senna, and he was going to catch him sooner or later anyway, a little
04:16bit of help for the backmarkers, but that's inevitable.
04:20But of course, it's the old story again, one thing to catch him, a much more difficult thing to be
04:27able to find a way round.
04:28So Prost is, within a lap or two now, to be in a position to attack.
04:36And now Senna and Prost just behind him have lapped everybody up to the sixth-placeman, Nelson Piquet, and they
04:43are on their 32nd lap out of 66 as they come into Woodcote, and this is going to be soon
04:49Prost's chance.
04:51In the meantime, Mickey Louder, who you remember is in to third place, is holding station with the two leaders,
05:00but not really making such impression.
05:02He's 21 seconds adrift, so he's pulled three seconds, but that may well have been caused by the traffic, and
05:13remember that of course...
05:14The top six in the world championship are running at the present moment, those two being Michele Alvareto, who is
05:21in fifth position.
05:23From the top six in the world championship, with Prost getting ever closer to Senna, are De Angelis, Rosberg, Johansson
05:31and Tombe.
05:32And Alain Prost, the diminutive little Frenchman, who really does not look strong enough to control an 850 horsepower in
05:42race trim Formula One car, is driving as ever a magnificently smooth and controlled race.
05:48He'll catch Senna, but he's going to have a great deal of difficulty in getting past the Brazilian.
05:54And they are now into the second half of the British Grand Prix, on a dry circuit, thank heavens.
06:03I noticed a little bit of fluid coming out of the gearbox, or the freezer that hangs over the gearbox
06:09on Prost's car.
06:10Now if you watch him out of the corner now, you may just see there was a bit of a
06:13puff out.
06:15Well that time it was alright, but round Cox, it was puffing a little bit.
06:21We'll just have to keep an eye on that, because it is normal for them to make a little bit
06:26of puff of fluid.
06:27But Prost looks a bit marginal, so we'll just watch to see if he's actually blowing fluid out.
06:35Now let's enjoy this as they come.
06:37Senna, young Ayrton Senna.
06:41Number 12, 25 years old, from Menorca in Brazil.
06:47And 30 year old Alain Prost from Saint Croix in Switzerland, although he is of course a Frenchman.
06:53And this was where Prost nipped through and passed earlier on.
06:59Not Senna of course, but he's very very quick on that corner.
07:02And Senna has again got the problem, and it's Martini in front of him.
07:09I say that with some trepidation, because Martini is famous for not using his mirrors, and for taking people off.
07:18And Senna makes sure he gets past him pretty darn quick, and Prost does the same thing.
07:22I think Martini is trying so hard to see where he's going now that he's wandering about all over the
07:26circuit.
07:28That's right, in view of the fact that he limbered up this morning by taking Elie De Angelis off in
07:33the warm-up.
07:34But, funny enough, I think he must be a bit chastised by that, because that's the best he's behaved when
07:40being lapped that I've ever seen.
07:41He actually noticed the leaders coming up behind him, and quite unexpectedly got out of their way.
07:48So, well done Martini.
07:50Yes, here, here. And well done Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, who are putting on a magnificent show of forceful
07:58Formula One Grand Prix driving at Silverstone in front of this enormous crowd.
08:04And here is Prost, again, coming up to the chicane. He's not close enough there to get past and take.
08:12The aerodynamic problem is that the closer he gets to Senna's car, the more of a vacuum he's going through.
08:20If you think about it, the car in front is making a hole in the air, and as he goes
08:23through the corners, there isn't enough air on his wings to make them work.
08:26So, the closer he gets, the less grip his car has. It's a bit of a vicious circle, because he
08:31needs to really be within two car lengths of Senna coming up to the chicane in order to make a
08:37serious challenge.
08:38Now, in order to pass, you have to start planning from sometimes even over a lap before.
08:44So, Prost's plan now will be to get closer and closer through Snow Corner. He's trying to get close. He
08:50wants to get close through Club. He's closer.
08:52He's doing... The plan is working so far.
08:57But I don't think that the slipstream is going to take him close enough this time as they go onto
09:02the bridge up the chicane.
09:03The closest he's been yet...
09:07Well, the slipstream's working. He's having a look.
09:09And Senna's shutting the door. Prost trying to get out the inside.
09:18I think we're going to see a fair duel over who gets into that chicane first over the next year.
09:25That certainly Senna is...
09:28A man with who is, at the moment, the slightly slower car-driver combination, but to balance that, he is
09:37the man in front, and Grand Prix cars, that is a big advantage.
09:43Ayrton Senna, as I have said before, has an incredibly cool and mature head on his comparatively young shoulders.
09:51After all, he's only 25 years old, but he's been driving for a very, very long time in carts, Formula
09:58Ford, Formula Ford 2000, Formula 3.
10:02Bearing in mind that he's homesick all the time from Brazil, and he's living in a foreign environment, he does
10:09a fantastic job.
10:10And as you see, he's eased away a bit. He's put it in the lead as he comes through to
10:14complete his 37th lap, and Alain Cross behind him.
10:18Now, you're not missing anything. Nicky Lauda is still in third place. He's 23 seconds behind these two.
10:24Andrew de Cesaris is still in fourth place in the Ligier, and he's 27 seconds behind Lauda.
10:32Michele Alboreto and Piquet are fifth and sixth, and there is a bit of a battle going on there.
10:38There's only about a second edit between Alboreto and Piquet for fifth position.
10:45Jack Lafitte, who is seventh, has been lapped. Derek Warwick, who is eighth, of course, has been lapped.
10:50Berger is ninth, Sura is tenth, Bootsen is eleventh, Martin Brundle is now in twelfth position.
10:57And I remind you that the fourth British driver, Jonathan Palmer, retired a long time ago.
11:04Riccardo Patrese is in thirteenth place.
11:07Kier Carlo Martini is fourteenth. Stefan Bellof is in fifteenth position.
11:17Now, Senna has got Piquet and Alboreto and Patrese in front of him.
11:23Alboreto and Piquet, and that is Piquet, are battling for fifth and sixth positions.
11:29Riccardo Patrese was long ago lapped and is in thirteenth place.
11:33And Riccardo Patrese is the man with whom Piquet had an altercation in Monaco,
11:38as a result of which they both went off in one of the most spectacular Grand Prix accidents I've ever
11:43seen,
11:43and were both perfectly okay.
11:46So, now, Alboreto fifth in the Scarlet Ferrari.
11:50Belsen Piquet sixth in the Brabham have passed Patrese,
11:54who is ahead of the race leader, Ayrton Senna, who moves to the right of the Alfa Romeo,
12:00but Patrese holds the line and it gives Prost a chance to get ever closer to Ayrton Senna
12:05as the Brazilian takes Patrese.
12:09And just the critical moment to ensure that Prost had to back off a bit,
12:14but now Prost is passed, and Ayrton Senna is closing up on the sixth man, Nelsen Piquet.
12:20They're coming through to complete lap 39 out of 66.
12:31Patrese lapped by four competitors in one lap.
12:39Senna into Cox.
12:43Bretto we're looking at now, the world championship leader in the Ferrari.
12:47Piquet behind him, who won in France in the Brabham.
12:49Ayrton Senna, who won in Portugal.
12:51Alain Prost, who won.
12:53So you have got four Grand Prix winners all together,
12:57but separated by nearly three miles,
12:59because Senna in the yellow helmet is catching to lap.
13:03Sixth-placeman Piquet in the Brabham BMW.
13:07And Piquet's teammate Sura is still running.
13:09He's in 10th place.
13:11It'll be interesting to see if Piquet notices the leaders coming up,
13:14because these two are very busy with their own battles.
13:17Piquet and Alboreto have been battling Senna,
13:21and Piquet is now looking for a way through,
13:23but he's not going to be given a...
13:25Oh, so...
13:25I don't think Piquet particularly saw him,
13:29but of course, as soon as he came alongside,
13:30he made room, and realised...
13:34But those two, in fact, have been having, in some ways,
13:37a better battle, because they've been swapping places,
13:39and Piquet did not make room for Prost then.
13:43This is a wonderful opportunity for Ayrton Senna,
13:46because he's got Piquet,
13:47he'll probably get Alboreto in a minute,
13:50and they're coming up to lap Stefan Beloff in the Tyrell,
13:52and it looks to me as though Piquet is not going to give way to Alain Prost,
13:57and that means to say that Ayrton Senna will be able to pull away.
14:02Piquet is still ahead of Prost,
14:04and Senna, in the yellow helmet,
14:06dives out from the slipstream of Alboreto's Ferrari,
14:09takes the fifth-placeman, having already taken Piquet, the sixth-placeman.
14:14Senna is on lap 41 out of 66.
14:17So, towards us, Senna leading Alboreto fifth,
14:20and Piquet there in sixth position,
14:23and Prost in fifth, in second place.
14:28Senna's on his way.
14:29And Prost is going to be looking to do the pair of them into the chicane now,
14:33if he possibly can,
14:34but Piquet's so busy,
14:36well, Piquet moved over, made room,
14:38he let Prost go,
14:40and Prost now has any Alboreto to deal with,
14:44but in the meantime, this very rightly says,
14:47Senna is enjoying a bit of a clear run.
14:49Here goes Alan Prost.
14:51He is through, dispensed,
14:54with this raging battle for fifth place that's going on.
14:58They've now lapped,
14:59and the two leaders now have a clear track in front of them,
15:03so a chance for Prost to get back onto Senna's tail.
15:07He's not going to be in position, this lap,
15:09to have a go at the chicane,
15:10which is his obvious, most sensible passing place,
15:14but by the time they come round and compete another lap and a half,
15:17I suspect that Prost will be ready to challenge again.
15:24Ayrton Senna deserves to win this race,
15:27so does Alain Prost,
15:28so does Alboreto,
15:29so does Piquet,
15:31and so do a lot of others.
15:33It's that close in the world championship at the moment,
15:35but Alain Prost has already won 18 Grand Prix,
15:39number two there, the Frenchman.
15:42Senna has won one,
15:44this is only his second year of Grand Prix racing Senna,
15:48and Alain Prost has reduced the gap,
15:51it was less than a second,
15:53last lap it was one and a half seconds,
15:55now it's 1.3 seconds,
15:57and virtually a visual close.
16:00And nearly onto the rumble bars goes Alain Prost,
16:05and you can see the gap now,
16:07between the first and second,
16:10and between the second Alain Prost,
16:13and the fourth place man now,
16:16Michele Alboreto,
16:18with Martini,
16:19and De Cesaris,
16:21joining the retirements,
16:22of Alio, Rosberg, Kiva,
16:25Mansell, De Angelis,
16:27Parma,
16:27Tombay,
16:28and Johansson.
16:29Completing lap 43.
16:31Yes, and, er,
16:33Prost not, not nearly close enough this time,
16:36but, er,
16:37what he will now be doing,
16:38he will be concentrating completely,
16:41on building his speed up behind Senna,
16:43all the way round the lap,
16:44so he arrives on his tail,
16:47as they go through Club Corner,
16:49which is the one that, er,
16:51takes them up through Abbey,
16:52and onto the chicane.
16:54But, Prost,
16:55as usual,
16:56he's fighting for grip,
16:58and he's a,
16:58he's a little bit too far behind,
16:59I think Prost is going to struggle,
17:01to get into a challenging position,
17:03on this particular lap.
17:05This particular lap,
17:07of the Marlborough,
17:08British Grand Prix,
17:09lap 44.
17:10In the yellow helmet,
17:12and the Black Lotus,
17:13Senna leads,
17:14in the white helmet,
17:15and the red and white,
17:16Barbara McLaren.
17:17Prost is second.
17:19Nicky Lauda,
17:20in the second,
17:20McLaren is third.
17:2127 seconds behind the leader.
17:24Fourth now,
17:25is Michele Alboreto.
17:27Fifth is Nelson Piquet.
17:28Sixth,
17:29in the second Ligier,
17:31is Jacques Lafitte.
17:32Seventh is Derek Warwick.
17:33Eighth is Berger.
17:34Ninth is Seurer.
17:36Tenth is Bootson.
17:37Martin Brundle,
17:38is now ninth,
17:39with Patrasi Tenth.
17:41And Stefan Bellof,
17:42still running in the second,
17:44DFB powered,
17:45Tyrrell,
17:45in eleventh place.
17:46Completing now,
17:48lap 44.
17:50Martin Brundle,
17:51by the way,
17:51has passed,
17:52Thierry Bootson,
17:53in getting up to,
17:55that position,
17:56that I told you he was in.
17:57Tenth position,
17:58he's ahead of,
17:59Thierry Bootson,
18:00in the arrows.
18:00A fine drive,
18:02by the Englishman,
18:03in only his second,
18:05turbocharged Grand Prix.
18:07And Senna,
18:08seems to have,
18:13control of the situation,
18:15at the present moment.
18:20Tyres of course,
18:21are critical.
18:22And so,
18:24also,
18:24very much of course,
18:26is fuel.
18:27All the teams,
18:28before this race began,
18:29were very worried,
18:31about fuel consumption.
18:32They are allowed,
18:34220 litres,
18:35no more,
18:37for the full race distance,
18:38they're not allowed,
18:39to refuel.
18:40As I said earlier on,
18:42the Silverstone,
18:43Grand Prix,
18:44is not only the fastest,
18:46but of course,
18:47because of that,
18:48it caused more throttle work,
18:49and more fuel consumption.
18:52Yes,
18:52and,
18:53in this area,
18:55McLarens,
18:56have,
18:57er,
18:58what has in the two,
18:59been a very big advantage,
19:00because they managed,
19:01to develop,
19:02or at least say,
19:03they claim,
19:04a fuel gauge,
19:05that is very accurate,
19:06indeed.
19:07Now,
19:08to,
19:08explain that a little bit,
19:09you have to understand,
19:10with all the g-forces,
19:11that go on,
19:12it is very difficult.
19:13You can't measure the fuel,
19:14in the tank,
19:15because it's never,
19:16sitting still in one place.
19:18Unlike a normal car,
19:19that's just driving gently.
19:20And therefore,
19:22it has to be done,
19:22through,
19:23er,
19:25computerized,
19:25measuring,
19:26of how much fuel,
19:27has actually,
19:27physically gone,
19:28into the engine.
19:29Now,
19:29McLarens,
19:29seem to have,
19:30a big advantage,
19:31over the others.
19:32And,
19:32Prost,
19:32we've seen,
19:33run out of petrol,
19:34several times,
19:35on the slowing down,
19:36lap of a race.
19:37So,
19:38they've got it taped.
19:39Now,
19:39Senna,
19:39does not enjoy this advantage,
19:41and,
19:42er,
19:43it could be,
19:43that Prost can just push him,
19:45into using too much fuel,
19:46because,
19:47as,
19:47as we understand it,
19:48or certainly up until,
19:50very recently,
19:51unless,
19:52the Lotus,
19:53er,
19:54team,
19:54have come up,
19:55with a new,
19:57system,
19:57he hasn't had,
19:58nearly as accurate information,
20:00available to him,
20:01as is available to Alan Prost.
20:03There's no doubt,
20:03that Prost,
20:04will be able to judge it,
20:05to within, er,
20:06really,
20:07a, you know,
20:07a litre or two,
20:09of petrol.
20:11So,
20:12when it's this place,
20:12that can be very critical,
20:13at the end of the race.
20:16Cops Corner,
20:17lap 47,
20:20fourth gear,
20:20135 miles an hour.
20:22Now,
20:22down to the,
20:23sweeping left-hander,
20:24at Maggots,
20:25at a,
20:26165 miles an hour.
20:27Senna,
20:28Cross,
20:28Lauda,
20:29Albaretto,
20:30Piquet,
20:31Lafitte.
20:32Now,
20:32into Beckett's,
20:33third gear,
20:34125,
20:35the short dash,
20:35to Chapel,
20:36the left-hander,
20:37which swings into,
20:38the very quick,
20:40hangar straight,
20:40which is not actually,
20:41the fastest part,
20:42of the course.
20:43And as you saw,
20:44in that caption,
20:45just now,
20:46the ferocity,
20:47of the battle,
20:47for the lead,
20:48has now started,
20:48to leave,
20:49Nicky Lauda,
20:49behind.
20:51Ayrton Senna,
20:52leading the race,
20:53in fighting off,
20:54Alan Frost,
20:54is going quicker,
20:55and quicker,
20:55and quicker,
20:56and, uh,
20:57as this battle speeds up,
20:59Lauda,
20:59has appeared,
21:00to be unable,
21:01to be unable,
21:01to respond,
21:02and looks,
21:02as if he's settled,
21:04for a nice,
21:05safe,
21:05secure,
21:05third place.
21:09There is,
21:09Nicky Lauda.
21:17Third position.
21:19And I wouldn't put it,
21:20above Alan Frost,
21:21just to be driving,
21:22tactically.
21:23He's an incredibly,
21:24cool thinker,
21:25in the cockpit.
21:26And a lot of people,
21:27wonder,
21:28what the drivers do,
21:29apart from,
21:30driving the car,
21:31when they're,
21:31in a Grand Prix,
21:32like this.
21:32The answer is,
21:33they think very,
21:34very hard indeed,
21:35about race tactics.
21:38And Alan Frost,
21:39will be watching,
21:40that,
21:40fuel monitoring equipment,
21:42of his,
21:42very carefully indeed.
21:44He will be getting,
21:45pit signals,
21:46as he goes,
21:46past the crowded,
21:48Grandstand,
21:48in front of this,
21:49massive crowd,
21:50at Silverstone.
21:51And,
21:52he will be computing,
21:53in his mind,
21:54how the fuel is going,
21:55in relation to,
21:56the number of laps,
21:57that are left,
21:58and the gap,
21:58that is between himself,
21:59and Ayrton Senna.
22:01With Nicky Lauda,
22:02third,
22:02and dropping back,
22:0439 seconds.
22:05The leaders,
22:06have lapped everybody,
22:07up to Lauda.
22:08Alvareto is fourth,
22:09Pique is fifth,
22:10Lafitte is sixth,
22:11Warwick is seventh,
22:12Berger is eighth,
22:13Sura is ninth,
22:15and Brundle is still tenth.
22:17Well,
22:18I've just been,
22:18er,
22:19looking at Ayrton Senna's
22:21lap times,
22:21over the last,
22:23er,
22:24eight or so laps,
22:25and one of the measures,
22:27of the skill,
22:28and quality,
22:29of a Grand Prix driver,
22:31is his consistency,
22:32of lap time,
22:33and Senna's lap times,
22:34have been absolutely immaculate,
22:37over, er,
22:37ever since he had a clear run,
22:39with no back laugh,
22:39as he brought them down,
22:40by about,
22:41half a tenth of a second a lap,
22:43which is staggeringly consistent,
22:45and he's now come down,
22:47to lapping,
22:47in just over,
22:49one minute ten seconds,
22:50one minute ten point oh five,
22:52something like that,
22:52but he's,
22:53reducing the lap time,
22:54each lap,
22:55by a little bit,
22:56so these two,
22:57really are going,
22:58very quickly indeed,
22:59and in fact,
23:00they're just out,
23:01stripping the field,
23:01they've lapped,
23:02all,
23:03but third place man,
23:05Lauda,
23:05and they've left him,
23:06a long way,
23:06behind now.
23:0817 laps to go,
23:09including this one,
23:11they being,
23:11Ayrton Senna,
23:12there,
23:13the leader,
23:14Alain Prost,
23:14second,
23:15Lauda, third,
23:16only those three,
23:17are on the,
23:1949th lap,
23:21because everybody else,
23:22has been lapped.
23:22There he is,
23:23with Senna,
23:24bobbing out of his,
23:25to lap him,
23:27yet again,
23:27for the fifth time,
23:29and 13 drivers,
23:30out of the race.
23:32Now Senna,
23:32is actually,
23:33pulling away,
23:35from Alain Prost,
23:36no doubt about that,
23:38Prost isn't going to,
23:39have any trouble,
23:39in getting cars fell off.
23:41It's funny,
23:42I was just talking about,
23:43his consistency,
23:44and having got down,
23:45to one minute,
23:46ten point oh five,
23:47Senna has just,
23:48produced a lap,
23:49nearly a second quicker,
23:50which would explain,
23:52why Prost,
23:53is no longer,
23:54right up his gearbox,
23:54so,
23:56no doubt the Prost,
23:57didn't go any so,
23:58now it may just be,
23:58a tactical move,
23:59by Senna,
24:00remember,
24:00that the drivers,
24:01can adjust,
24:03their turbo boost,
24:04in the cockpit,
24:06and,
24:06er,
24:07I strongly suspect,
24:08that in order,
24:08to produce,
24:09that dramatic,
24:10an increase in speed,
24:12that Senna,
24:13er,
24:13has actually,
24:14had a little fiddle,
24:15with his boost,
24:17controls,
24:18but of course,
24:19in turning it up,
24:21gives more power,
24:21he gets,
24:22gives more petrol.
24:26If Alain,
24:27Prost finishes,
24:28in, er,
24:29second position,
24:30he'll add, er,
24:31six points,
24:32to the,
24:3336 he's already got,
24:35giving him 32.
24:36Now we're gonna have,
24:37a very careful listen,
24:38to, er,
24:39Senna's engine,
24:40as he comes past,
24:40our contribution,
24:42next time,
24:43on the start,
24:43finish line,
24:43because,
24:44his engine sounded,
24:45a little bit rough,
24:46then,
24:46as he went,
24:46through this again,
24:47however,
24:48that could be,
24:49that he's turned,
24:50the boost up,
24:50because, er,
24:51they do make,
24:52a different sound,
24:52so we'll give it,
24:53a good listen,
24:54because he doesn't look,
24:54to be slowing down.
24:57You saw him,
24:57you saw him,
24:58look in his mirrors,
24:59then,
24:59as he came,
25:00out of the corner,
25:01to see,
25:01where Prost was,
25:02he's closing up,
25:03on Thierry Boutsen,
25:05in the left place,
25:06in the BMW,
25:07powered arrows,
25:08so the BMW,
25:09seem to be coping,
25:10with a tremendously,
25:11now,
25:12the gap,
25:13between Senna,
25:14and Prost,
25:15is 2.37 seconds,
25:18they're on lap,
25:2052,
25:21they've got,
25:2214 laps to go,
25:23including this one,
25:24Senna,
25:25unless Prost,
25:26has got something,
25:27in reserve,
25:27which I'm beginning,
25:28to doubt,
25:29looks as though,
25:30he's in control,
25:31of the race,
25:31and he passes,
25:32Bootsen,
25:34no problem there,
25:36any driver,
25:37that can be passed,
25:38is going to be a bonus,
25:39because that man,
25:40just might be a problem,
25:42for the chap,
25:43behind you,
25:43to get passed,
25:44which would enable you,
25:45to extend your lead,
25:47you in this case,
25:48being number 12,
25:49there,
25:52Ayrton Senna,
25:53and it would be,
25:54the third JPS win,
25:55this season,
25:56if he won,
25:56because Elio De Angelis,
25:57has won them.
25:59that he gave,
26:00one quick lap,
26:01to give Prost,
26:02a bit of a fright,
26:03and is now,
26:03attempting to turn,
26:04his boost down,
26:05and conserve fuel,
26:06but in fact,
26:06Prost,
26:07as you saw then,
26:08as they went through,
26:08the chicane,
26:09is now visibly closer,
26:10so,
26:11whatever Senna's doing,
26:13and I suspect it,
26:14to be tactical,
26:16it so far,
26:17has failed,
26:18to phase,
26:19the experience,
26:19Prost.
26:212.7 seconds,
26:232.7 seconds,
26:23the gap,
26:24lovely,
26:25shot,
26:25looking down,
26:27and it enables you,
26:28to see,
26:28just how much,
26:29of the circuit,
26:30is between,
26:31Senna,
26:32and Prost,
26:33as they go,
26:34up,
26:35leaving the,
26:3653rd lap,
26:37and the gap,
26:39is 2.9 seconds,
26:42Martin Brunel,
26:44an impeccable,
26:44young driver,
26:46in,
26:47only his second,
26:48season,
26:50of Grand Prix racing,
26:51and his first season,
26:52of real,
26:53Grand Prix racing,
26:54in today's,
26:54turbocharged era,
26:56because last year,
26:57he was in a,
26:58Tyrell,
26:59with a Ford DFB engine,
27:00now,
27:01am I wrong,
27:02is Martin Brunel,
27:03going to move over,
27:04and let Senna through,
27:05or not?
27:07Martin,
27:08looking in his mirrors,
27:10Senna trying to,
27:10go first to the left,
27:12now to the right,
27:12and Senna is,
27:13I think,
27:13being held up,
27:14or was,
27:15but Martin moves over,
27:16Senna is through,
27:18now Prost,
27:18has got the problem,
27:20and now,
27:21Alain Prost,
27:22in the second position,
27:23ahead of his team mate,
27:24Nicky Lauda,
27:25who is,
27:27a long,
27:28long way behind now,
27:29in third position,
27:30and clearly,
27:30not able to do anything about it,
27:32he's nearly a full lap behind,
27:34Ayrton Senna,
27:36the race leader,
27:37and Alain Prost,
27:38as Prost comes up to,
27:40Martin Brunel's gearbox,
27:42moves out to the right,
27:43Brunel moves over,
27:45Senna goes through,
27:46cross corner,
27:48and,
27:48and Prost is through,
27:50up into second position,
27:54and we're on,
27:55and we're on,
27:55lap 55,
27:5766 lap race,
28:00193.5 miles,
28:0513 cars,
28:07in the running,
28:08prior to the 26,
28:10that started,
28:16and the question,
28:18is,
28:19can Senna,
28:20stay off,
28:21Alain Prost,
28:23the British,
28:24strong free,
28:26and,
28:27and,
28:27Alain Prost,
28:28has still got,
28:29Nelson Piquet,
28:30behind him,
28:31in sixth position,
28:33but it doesn't look,
28:33as though there's going,
28:34to be a change there,
28:36and we've still got,
28:37the,
28:37fuel consumption,
28:39problem,
28:39to think about,
28:40as have,
28:41of course,
28:41the drivers,
28:44Senna is the chaffest,
28:46potentially,
28:48the man,
28:49most likely to be,
28:50and Senna's engine,
28:52sounded rough to me,
28:53again there,
28:53James.
28:54I was just wondering,
28:55I'd like to turn off Mario,
28:57to say exactly that,
28:58if he went past,
28:59our cognitive position,
29:00his engine,
29:01sounded very rough,
29:03however,
29:04it,
29:06it,
29:06seems to be going alright,
29:08the car,
29:08is not visibly slow,
29:10and,
29:11so,
29:12I can't really,
29:13hazard a guess,
29:14as to what's wrong,
29:15with the engine,
29:15in the old days,
29:16normally,
29:17I would have said,
29:18it was a broken exhaust,
29:19because they always sound horrid,
29:21and,
29:21but they still work alright,
29:23but,
29:23in this case,
29:24with,
29:24with a turbocharged engine,
29:26a broken exhaust,
29:27means no boost pressure,
29:29so,
29:29it's a,
29:29sort of a different story,
29:30so,
29:31as I say,
29:32I'm not at all sure,
29:33what Senna's trouble is,
29:34but,
29:34Prost seems to be closing in a bit.
29:39Well,
29:40just as a battle is going on,
29:42for,
29:42first place,
29:44Jacques Lafitte is through,
29:45and Alain Prost is right up with Senna.
29:48Absolutely right,
29:49and look,
29:49Senna is in trouble,
29:50Senna,
29:51a definite loss of power there,
29:53you saw Prost go,
29:55whizzing past,
29:56and Senna's engine,
29:57which has been sounding rough,
29:58we noticed that a few laps ago,
30:00still sounding rough,
30:01and Prost now,
30:02takes the lead of the British Grand Prix,
30:04the Masters out of Senna,
30:06and,
30:06we strongly suspect that Senna is in control,
30:09he's fighting back,
30:10he's not taking it lying down,
30:12so,
30:13it is by no means over yet.
30:17And it's going to be very interesting,
30:19in world championship terms,
30:20between,
30:21Prost now leading,
30:23with a potential nine points,
30:25to the 26 he's already got,
30:27and Michele Alvareto,
30:30who's on three points,
30:32for fourth position at the moment,
30:34which would give it 34 points in total,
30:37and it would mean that Prost would lead the championship by one point,
30:41but there's a lot of butts in motor racing,
30:43and now,
30:44Prost is going through to complete lap 58,
30:49but Senna having been caught and passed through,
30:52no fault of his in driving turns,
30:54because,
30:54I don't suppose for a moment he missed a gear,
30:57or anything as simple as that,
30:58and now they've got,
31:00this is interesting,
31:01because they're catching Nicky Lauda,
31:03who's in third place,
31:04and for the first time,
31:06for a very long time,
31:08when Nicky Lauda has Sura,
31:10and Patrese in front of it,
31:12the first time for a very long time,
31:13the third place man is going to be lapped,
31:15and it looks to me,
31:16as though he may not even be finishing,
31:18he is going so slowly,
31:20and that will bring Alvareto up,
31:22and Senna is going for it,
31:24Senna is going for the lead,
31:28Senna is going for the lead,
31:30and he's got it,
31:31Senna has got the lead,
31:33from Alain Prost,
31:34a brilliant bit of passing,
31:36now he's got to get Ricardo and Patrese,
31:38he has passed him,
31:39and left him again,
31:40and he does it,
31:40Patrese moves over,
31:42and a train,
31:43a two compartment train,
31:45of Senna and Prost,
31:48who are coming up to compete,
31:49lap 59 in the 66 lap race,
31:51and Prost is going through,
31:52or is he no,
31:53Senna holds him off,
31:54but they've got Mark Sura,
31:56in front of them,
31:57and the Brabham BMW.
31:59It's fantastic stuff,
32:01so we thought Senna was sick,
32:02and Prost having a go now,
32:03and he's going to get in,
32:04he's on the,
32:04he's got the inside line,
32:07and the problem is,
32:08I think they do it deliberately,
32:09to confuse us Murray,
32:10because they've got these,
32:12the adjustable boost,
32:14in the cockpit,
32:15now Prost,
32:15Senna really does seem,
32:16to have snowed a bit,
32:17this time.
32:23And this,
32:25Senna regaining the lead,
32:26as they went down,
32:27into a snow corner,
32:29Senna gets alongside Prost,
32:30goes later on,
32:31to the brakes,
32:32and Senna's inside,
32:34and as we subsequently know,
32:35Prost has now retaken him,
32:37going into Copse.
32:38So,
32:38an absolutely ferocious battle,
32:41to the lead of the British Grand Prix.
32:43But, er,
32:44Senna is now going,
32:45very, very, very slowly,
32:47down the street.
32:48There he is,
32:48in the background.
32:49Ayrton Senna,
32:50he's slowing,
32:51and he's going to stop,
32:52I think,
32:53and retire.
32:53He's going so slowly now,
32:56in front of the pits,
32:57he's got his visor up.
32:59Ayrton Senna's race is run,
33:02another bitter pill,
33:04for the Brazilian,
33:06having,
33:06as he has in virtually,
33:08every Grand Prix this year,
33:10lead,
33:10only not to finish,
33:12yet again.
33:13And this is going to be,
33:14the seventh retirement,
33:16in eight races,
