00:00A protruding curb at a junction in Section 17,
00:04Petaling Jaya is endangering motorists and has led to accidents.
00:08Section 17, resident Tracy Toh told Star Metro that the walkway,
00:13located at the junction of Jalan 17-1A and Jalan 17-1,
00:19has a protrusion that causes the road to be narrowed by more than half.
00:23Toh's car tire was damaged after hitting the curb on February 14.
00:27She said she couldn't see the curb due to poor lighting
00:30and the lack of reflective paint or warning signs.
00:34The visible damage suggests other motorists have also struck it.
00:38She filed a compensation claim with Petaling Jaya City Council
00:42on March 6 for the tire replacement cost.
00:45However, her claim was rejected in a September 10 letter
00:49stating the walkway was built within Council Reserve Land according to specifications.
00:54She is now seeking compensation through the court.
00:57Another resident, Norlin, said she nearly hit the curb two to three years ago
01:02and now avoids the area.
01:04She said illegal parking during the day further reduces the road's width,
01:08making it harder to enter or exit Jalan 17-1A.
01:13Local councillor Christopher Ong said the curb cannot be removed
01:18as the walkway must be preserved.
01:20Toh said that since the segment that protrudes into the road
01:24leads directly to a drain,
01:26it served no function and should be removed.
01:29Visitors to the weekly agricultural and night markets
01:32also park illegally along Jalan 17-1,
01:36causing congestion and potential collisions at the junctions.
01:39While the council had installed bollards along Jalan 17-1,
01:44Toh said the flexible bollards are ineffective
01:46as motorists continue parking indiscriminately beside them.
01:49She also highlighted an uncovered drain at the walkway's other end,
01:54calling these public safety hazards
01:56accidents waiting to happen.
01:58The Pataling Jaya City Council had not responded to queries as of press time.
