02:40From ABC News World Headquarters in New York, this is World News Tonight with David Muir.
02:48Good evening. We begin tonight here with breaking developments and the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie,
02:52the concrete clues they are now pursuing tonight in the desperate search for the 84-year-old mother of Today
02:57Show host Savannah Guthrie.
02:59It's been nearly two weeks now since she was taken from her home in Tucson.
03:02Tonight, investigators with that description now.
03:04They believe the man at Nancy Guthrie's front door was about 5'9 or 5'10 with an average build.
03:11Authorities tonight also looking to find out who purchased the backpack, the 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack.
03:17It is sold by Walmart. They're hoping store cameras will offer clues or that someone will come forward to say,
03:22I know someone with that kind of backpack.
03:24The video from the New York Post showing deputies finding gloves near the side of a road not far from
03:29Nancy Guthrie's home.
03:30ABC News has now been told tonight they did recover DNA from those gloves, that DNA now being tested.
03:37And tonight here, our interview with the sheriff.
03:39They're urging plea now to the public, anyone with a doorbell cam, a Nest cam, a ring cam, what they're
03:44asking neighbors to do right now.
03:46Here's our chief investigative correspondent, Aaron Katursky, in Tucson, leading us off again tonight.
03:52Tonight, nearly two weeks after Nancy Guthrie's abduction, investigators are now chasing concrete clues,
03:57a backpack, gloves, and potential DNA as they race to unmask her suspected kidnapper.
04:03After erecting that tent at the front door of the home,
04:06the FBI could be seen holding a measurement device to determine the height of the man at the door.
04:10Tonight, the FBI now says the suspect is about 5'9 or 5'10 with an average build.
04:15Authorities also have concrete information about the backpack the man was wearing.
04:19They say it was a 25-liter Ozark trail hiker pack, which is sold at Walmart.
04:24We found one at the Tucson Walmart for $11.
04:26The backpack's a Walmart backpack, right?
04:28So can you trace the sale?
04:30We're hoping.
04:31We're hoping.
04:32We have teams working on all of this stuff.
04:35Investigators could find who recently bought that backpack and whether the purchase was captured on video.
04:39In fact, just months ago, that same kind of footage from a retailer helped convict a suspect in a different
04:45case,
04:46Ryan Walsh in Massachusetts, accused of killing his wife.
04:49Prosecutors used the video of him buying a hacksaw, hatchet, bucket, and other supplies.
04:54Tonight, here in Tucson, they're hoping to find video of the suspect buying that backpack he was wearing at the
04:58front door.
04:59Or maybe someone will come forward to tell authorities they know someone with that same kind of Walmart Ozark trail
05:04hiker pack.
05:05And investigators are also working to identify DNA found in the house that is not Nancy Guthrie's or from anyone
05:12in her circle.
05:13The sheriff speaking publicly about the case for the first time in more than a week,
05:16telling us they have recovered several gloves near Nancy Guthrie's home, like this one photographed by the New York Post.
05:22It's not clear if the gloves are connected to the case, if they were worn by the man at the
05:26door.
05:27But investigators did find DNA on the gloves, and they're testing it.
05:30Anything useful come back that you know?
05:32Well, you've got DNA, so that's of use.
05:35Now we have to go through and try to eliminate people or make people.
05:39We're so hopeful that we're getting closer.
05:43We just believe that.
05:45Tonight, investigators with an urgent plea to the public, they need more home security camera footage.
05:51They've asked homeowners all over Pima County, but especially within a two-mile radius of Nancy Guthrie's home,
05:56to help with any footage from the month before she disappeared.
05:59It could hold clues of any vehicle or person that could have been casing the area.
06:04We're pushing out another message with Ring to say, hey, people, take a look, send it to us, give us
06:11some permissions, let's look.
06:13This video, for example, was uploaded by a homeowner six miles from Nancy Guthrie's home.
06:17Someone at their front door recorded the week before.
06:20The sheriff acknowledging they're looking at all the videos.
06:22And while there may be no connection, it does show someone's Ring camera somewhere might have captured something.
06:28This week, just hours after the FBI first issued the video and stills from Nancy Guthrie's front door,
06:34authorities raced to a scene 50 miles south of Tucson, where they detained a delivery man for hours before letting
06:40him go.
06:40Has that got fully cleared? Nobody's fully cleared.
06:44And after Savannah Guthrie posted on Instagram childhood home movies with her mother and saying they will never give up
06:50on her,
06:51the sheriff told us authorities will not either.
06:53What's your message to the Guthrie family today?
06:56We're not giving up. All this can go away. If Nancy's out there, we're going to find her. We're not
07:02giving up.
07:03The sheriff told us tonight, David, tens of thousands of tips have come in.
07:08Tomorrow's going to mark two full weeks since Nancy Guthrie was last seen.
07:12David, that's two full weeks. The Guthrie family has gone without answers.
07:17David?
07:17Well, it goes without saying. We continue to think about Nancy Guthrie, her daughter Savannah, of course,
07:22our friend Savannah Guthrie, and the entire family.
07:25Still impossible to imagine two weeks in what they're going through.
07:28Aaron, thank you.
07:29We move to the other news this Friday night.
07:31The image is coming in. Dramatic video showing the collision of two U.S. Navy ships, a destroyer and another
07:36ship.
07:36There's also late word coming in tonight.
07:38A fighter jet was scrambled while President Trump was at Fort Bragg today.
07:41A plane intercepted what had them so concerned.
07:44But first, hear this collision, and here's Martha Raddatz now.
07:50Tonight, images of two U.S. Navy ships colliding in the Caribbean.
07:56Videos appearing to be taped by crew members and circulated on social media capturing the destroyer USS Truxton and a
08:05military supply ship slam into each other during a replenishment operation Wednesday afternoon.
08:13A horn blaring as the destroyer approaches the supply ship crashing into its side.
08:22Officials now assessing whether the vessels are able to proceed with their deployment in the Caribbean, where they are part
08:28of the massive U.S. buildup to go after drug cartels.
08:32The image is emerging as the Marines announced the death of 21-year-old Lance Corporal Chukwameka Ophora of Florida,
08:40also deployed in the Caribbean, who fell overboard, the USS Iwo Jima, and was declared lost at sea after a
08:48day's long surge.
08:49And, David, to that late-breaking news, a small private plane flew within the restricted airspace over Fort Bragg, where
08:57the president was speaking today.
08:58One fighter jet was scrambled to intercept the plane.
09:02The jet released flares to alert the private plane, and the pilot then diverted to a regional airport, likely entering
09:10that restricted area inadvertently.
09:12David?
09:12Martha Raddatz with us tonight on both fronts.
09:14Martha, thank you.
09:15Tonight, we have learned two ICE agents have been placed on administrative leave.
09:19They are now under criminal investigation, accused of lying about shooting a man during the immigration crackdown in Minneapolis.
09:25What the agents claimed and what prosecutors are now saying tonight.
09:28Here's Alex Perez.
09:31Tonight, two ICE agents have been placed on administrative leave as federal authorities launch a criminal investigation to determine whether
09:38they lied about the shooting of a man that sparked violent protests in Minneapolis.
09:42The official narrative of that shooting collapsing.
09:46It happened one week after the fatal ICE shooting of mother-of-three Renee Good, an ICE agent shooting and
09:51wounding Venezuelan national Julio Cesar Sosa Celis.
09:55At the time, DHS accused Sosa Celis and another man of ambushing an agent, claiming Sosa Celis fled to a
10:02nearby home as they carried out a targeted traffic stop, alleging agents were attacked with a shovel and a broom
10:08handle.
10:08But an FBI affidavit casting doubt, suggesting Sosa Celis wasn't even in the car that was stopped.
10:16In this harrowing video, you can hear children crying as a woman tells a 911 dispatcher in Spanish that agents
10:23followed a man home and shot him in the leg when they tried to close the door.
10:27Federal prosecutors now say new evidence, including video, is materially inconsistent with the allegations in the affidavit.
10:35Acting ICE director Todd Lyons admitting two officers may have made, quote, untruthful statements.
10:40Those agents placed on administrative leave and prosecutors now dropping all charges against the men.
10:47In a statement, the family's attorney saying they're overjoyed, adding the charges against them were based on lies by an
10:53ICE agent who recklessly shot into their home through a closed door.
10:57All this just 24 hours after border czar Tom Homan announced an end to the ICE surge in Minnesota after
11:03the deadly shootings of Renee Good and Alex Preddy and acknowledged the problems on the ground.
11:09There were some issues here and we addressed those issues, but I'm not going to say anybody did anything wrong.
11:16And David, tonight, those families are calling for the agents to be charged.
11:19ICE says there have been 37 investigations involving excessive force.
11:23Nineteen of those are still pending review.
11:26David.
11:26Alex Perez with us on a Friday night.
11:28Alex, thank you.
11:29Tonight, a partial government shutdown now just hours away.
11:32Democrats refusing to fund the Department of Homeland Security unless there are major changes to these immigration operations, including having
11:39ICE agents remove their masks.
11:41Here's Mary Bruce tonight.
11:43Tonight, for the third time in President Trump's second term, parts of the federal government bracing for a shutdown.
11:50Democrats refusing to fund the Department of Homeland Security unless Republicans agree to key changes to immigration enforcement.
11:58We've drawn a hard line in the sand on behalf of the American people, and we're not going to allow
12:04the Congress to cross it.
12:05ICE needs to be dramatically reformed.
12:09Period.
12:10Full stop.
12:11Democrats demanding that ICE agents stop wearing masks, display identification, coordinate with state and local governments, and obtain warrants signed
12:20by a judge before making arrests.
12:22What they're going to do is shut down FEMA, Coast Guard, TSA, and things that hurt real people.
12:26Tonight, hours before the government shuts down, the halls of Congress empty.
12:31Republican leaders sending lawmakers home for a week-long holiday recess.
12:35As he was heading out of town himself, President Trump telling me he plans to get personally involved in talks,
12:42but refusing to say if he's willing to make any concessions.
12:45How long are you prepared for this thing to go on?
12:48So I am here to protect law enforcement and our great police and ICE and Border Patrol and everybody.
12:56I'm here to protect them because they're protecting us.
13:00And David, Democrats say they're trying to protect the American people, too, after two American citizens, Renee Good and Alex
13:06Preddy, were shot and killed by immigration enforcement officers.
13:10David.
13:10Mary Bruce, live at the White House tonight.
13:12Mary, thank you.
13:13Now to the new video just in tonight.
13:14After that plane crash in Pennsylvania we reported on, investigators now say the pilot was distracted when his door opened
13:21on that plane during takeoff.
13:24Here's Morgan Norwood.
13:25Tonight, the NTSB says the pilot of this plane that crashed into a senior living facility parking lot in Pennsylvania
13:32was distracted by a door that popped open as the plane was taking off.
13:37Watch again closely. You can see what appears to be the plane's propeller spinning away from the plane just as
13:43it hit the ground and erupted into flames.
13:47The NTSB's just issued final reports as shortly after the plane took off from Lancaster Airport in Pennsylvania, the pilot
13:54heard a pop and saw one of the cabin doors on the plane had opened during takeoff.
13:59Thanks for tower. Bonanza three-fourths of the mic has an open door. We need to return for landing.
14:04Investigators say that open door distracted the pilot to the point he failed to maintain adequate airspeed after takeoff.
14:12Investigators also say the plane was 500 pounds overweight, which increased its stall speed and adversely affected its control characteristics.
14:20And five people on board suffered burns and other injuries, but miraculously, David, no one was killed.
14:26David.
14:27Morgan Norwood tonight. Morgan, thank you.
14:29This evening, the alarming numbers here on measles in this country, the CDC reporting at least 24 states now reporting
14:36measles cases, more than 900 confirmed cases in January alone.
14:41That's five times higher than what we usually see in an entire year.
14:45And tonight, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a vaccine skeptic, making news himself after what he said about snorting
14:51cocaine off a toilet seat.
14:53Here's Steve Osunzami.
14:54The new numbers tonight can't be ignored.
14:58910 measles cases across 24 states since January, five times more cases than America usually sees in a calendar year.
15:07For months, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, a lifelong vaccine skeptic, has been giving Americans mixed signals about giving children
15:14the vaccine.
15:15But now, with a record number of cases, the Trump administration is strongly encouraging parents to vaccinate children, a message
15:23that critics say is overdue.
15:25Take the vaccine, please.
15:26We have a solution for a problem.
15:28Not all illnesses are equally dangerous and not all people are equally susceptible to those illnesses.
15:33But measles is one you should get your vaccine.
15:34The health secretary had many scratching their heads this week on another topic, telling a podcast host how, as a
15:40recovering addict during COVID, he wasn't afraid of getting sick by going to his support meetings.
15:46I'm not scared of a germ.
15:48You know, I used to snort cocaine off of toilet seats.
15:52What's frustrating to so many in public health is that here in the U.S., we had measles beat.
15:58It was declared eliminated in the year 2000.
16:01And studies show that the measles vaccine is both safe and 97 percent effective if you take it.
16:08David.
16:09Steve Ozensami from the CDC.
16:10Steve, thank you.
16:11Tonight, an au pair sentenced to 10 years in prison for assisting in a double murder plot with her former
16:16employer, a husband and father in Virginia.
16:18Juliana Perez-Moguliz, emotional in court today.
16:21She confessed to an affair with that husband, Brendan Banfield.
16:25He was convicted of killing his wife and another man that he lured to their home, the judge admonishing that
16:30au pair in court.
16:32Your actions were deliberate, self-serving, and demonstrated a profound disregard for human life.
16:37You do not deserve anything other than incarceration and a life of reflection on what you have done to the
16:40victim in this family.
16:42May it weigh heavily on your soul.
16:44That husband, Brendan Banfield, will be sentenced in May.
16:47He faces life in prison.
16:49Now to the U.S. economy tonight.
16:50Inflation slowing last month.
16:52Encouraging news.
16:53The consumer price index up 2.4 percent.
16:56That's compared to one year ago.
16:57That's down from 2.7 percent, though, in December.
17:00Housing and many food costs, though, still remain high.
17:03When we come back tonight, the disturbing video showing a major brawl.
17:06Look at this breaking out on a passenger jet.
17:08The pilot is forced to divert the plane.
17:10Also tonight, a college football star charged with rape following a year-long investigation.
17:15What a judge has now decided tonight.
17:17And just in this evening, the catastrophic performance for Team USA in Italy.
17:21The Quad God and the stunning falls.
17:23We're going to go to Italy right after the break here.
17:27Tonight, that passenger jet erupting into chaos as a brawl breaks out, prompting an emergency landing.
17:32A passenger capturing multiple people fighting and yelling on the flight from Turkey to the U.K.
17:37A flight attendant trying to break up the fight initially.
17:39That plane diverted to Belgium, where the fighting continued on the ground.
17:43The airline tonight, Jet 2, saying two passengers have been banned for life.
17:47When we come back here, that college football star charged with rape now.
17:51And what a judge has decided tonight, and the devastating falls on the ice.
17:55We're going to go to Italy in a moment here.
17:57To the index tonight, BYU football star Parker Kingston charged with felony rape.
18:02Bail is now set at $100,000 for the Brigham Young University wide receiver.
18:06Kingston making his first court appearance nearly a year after a 20-year-old woman accused him of sexual assault.
18:12The judge ordering Kingston to wear an ankle monitor as well.
18:16When we come back tonight, the stunning upset on the ice for the quad god.
18:19Our reporter standing by in Italy for us with the images tonight.
18:24ABC World News Tonight with David Muir.
18:27Sponsored by Nervive Nerve Relief.
18:29Feel alive with Nervive.
18:33Tonight, the stunning upset on the ice for Team USA.
18:36Let's go to Maggie Rooley in Italy.
18:37Maggie.
18:39David, it is the absolutely shocking upset reverberating here at these Olympics.
18:44After clinching the gold for the U.S. and the team event just days ago,
18:48Ilya Malinan from Virginia heavily favored to win gold tonight in the men's singles event.
18:52Instead, with a catastrophic free skate, failing to even make the podium.
18:57Falling twice on two of his jumps, stumbling on others, finishing in eighth place.
19:03A stunning performance as he nailed the backflip in the short program.
19:07And he's the only skater to ever land a quadruple axle in competition.
19:11Affectionately earning him the nickname, Quad God.
19:14Now, after the skate, he held his face in his hands.
19:17Ilya saying he's in shock and his mistakes tonight were all mental.
19:21And at the end of the night, there was this moment.
19:23A display of true sportsmanship.
19:25Ilya hugging the gold medal winner from Kazakhstan.
19:29David, we spoke with Ilya before he left for these games.
19:32He told me that at 21 years old, this is only his beginning.
19:36And no doubt, David, he'll be back.
19:39No doubt he will. He's still incredible, Maggie.
19:41Thank you. And thank you at home.
19:42I'll see you Monday. Good night.
