00:00Representation is vitally important.
00:02For me personally, my parents certainly
00:05have been great leaders and great examples.
00:08My mom, in her work and as a consultant
00:10and serving on corporate boards, my mom passed away.
00:13But she liked to say that my dad and I
00:16weren't the only Hall of Famers in the family.
00:19She was in the Corporate Directors Hall of Fame.
00:22I didn't know such a thing existed, but she was a force.
00:26She demanded a seat at the table.
00:28And when she got to that seat, she made a difference
00:31and created a pathway for others to have a seat at the table
00:35as well.
00:35That was an incredible role model to have.
00:38And there's been others that have impacted me,
00:40both in my personal life, but also from afar.
00:42Her business partner, Clifford Alexander,
00:44they worked together for 30 years,
00:46former Secretary of the Army.
00:47They were pioneers.
00:48And they were examples of African-Americans
00:51who demanded a seat at the table,
00:54created opportunities for others.
00:55And so that's a responsibility.
00:58I have a seat at the table, and so trying to be impactful,
01:02trying to open the door for others.
01:04New players reach out to me about all the things
01:07I'm involved with, including professional ownership.
01:09So here's what I know.
01:10Here's what I've experienced.
01:11Here have been some of the challenges.
01:13Here are things that you should be thinking about now.
01:15You can have a vision, but you have to be able to execute that.
01:18I didn't wake up two years after retiring from basketball
01:22and all of a sudden stumble into an NBA franchise.
01:25These were things I was thinking about 20 years early,
01:28not knowing how, not knowing when, but knowing that that's
01:31what I wanted.
01:32So how do I align myself?
01:34How do I position myself to be there when the moment hits?
01:37So these are things that you try to convey to others.
01:41I'm beyond fortunate, beyond blessed to have incredible parents.
01:45And so much I've learned from them,
01:46and so much I try to apply to my life now.
01:49Standing on the shoulders of giants,
01:50but hopefully bringing along and establishing
01:53and inspiring more giants along the way.
01:55.
