Staff have launched industrial action at Northumbria University amid plans to switch pensions. Talks continue while most classes remain open.

00:02Hundreds of academics at Northumbria University in Newcastle have begun a
00:06strike over pensions. Members of the university and college union are planning
00:1010 days of industrial action before the 6th of March. The dispute follows the
00:16university's plan to move staff from the teachers pension scheme to the
00:20university superannuation scheme aiming to save 11 million pounds a year. The
00:25union says the change would leave staff financially worse off. University bosses
00:30highlight high costs of the current scheme. Most classes at the university
00:34are expected to continue and buildings remain open. Both sides continue talks
00:39and staff say they love teaching, research and students.
