Uproar in Bhadohi After Accused Brought to Court in Handcuffs; Citizens Cite Supreme Court Guidelines

Bhadohi (Uttar Pradesh): Tension prevailed in Bhadohi district after police escorted several accused to the court premises in handcuffs for arraignment, triggering objections from local residents and rights activists.

Eyewitnesses claimed that the accused were visibly handcuffed in public view, prompting protests. Citizens argued that, as per guidelines issued by the Supreme Court and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), accused persons should not be handcuffed in public or within court premises without specific and recorded reasons.

Protesters have demanded a formal inquiry into the incident and action against the officers responsible. They stated that handcuffing without clear justification violates established legal norms and human rights principles.

Police sources, however, maintained that the decision was taken strictly for security reasons. According to officials, the accused are facing serious charges and there was apprehension that they might attempt to flee. Police also pointed out that about a month ago, an accused had escaped from the court premises during a hearing, and strict precautions were being taken to prevent a repeat incident.

Despite the security explanation, residents stressed that there are clear restrictions on the use of handcuffs inside court premises, which led to the public outcry.

The incident has sparked a wider debate in the district over balancing security concerns with legal safeguards. It remains to be seen what action higher authorities will take following the demands for a transparent investigation.
