00:05Hey everyone, I'm Erin Bradley and I'm here at Guitar World today in New York City and I'm
00:10gonna play Blind Blake's Police Dog Blues. I have an open E tuning and I've got a
00:15kept it up on the sixth fret. Here it is.
00:27All my life I've been a traveling gal. All my life I've been a traveling gal.
00:38Staying alone, got no friends or pals.
00:59I'll hold my trunk down to Tennessee. I'll hold my trunk down to Tennessee.
01:10Hard to tell, but a girl made me.
01:30I met a boy, I couldn't get him on my mind. I met a boy, I couldn't get him on
01:38my mind.
01:40He passed me up saying he didn't like my kind.
02:01I'm scared to bother around his house at night. I'm scared to bother around his house at night.
02:10I'm scared to bother around his house at night. I'm scared to bother around his house at night.
02:40He gets a chance.
02:42He gets a chance.
02:43He'll leave a mark on everybody's house.
03:03Yes, I'd travel on, yes, I'd let him be
03:08Yes, I'd travel on, yes, I'd let him be
03:14Before he sticks that pony stag on me
03:22I took a long time to learn how to do the rest stroke or double thumbing thing that Blaine Blake
03:28does quite often and goes like this
03:35And I find that really hard to get at first
03:38Yeah, it's really fun to play as well
03:40And there's a lot of licks in the song as well and a lot of fills, fast fills
03:46Which I find quite challenging at first but I got it finally, I suppose I still make a mistake
03:52There's another solo in the song that I find really fun to play
03:55I think it's the second solo in the song
03:58And it goes like this
04:15I found that pretty hard to get at first as well, the start bit is pretty fast
04:20Getting the harmonics up really high I found quite hard as well, but it sounds really cool
04:26Once I got it, it was really fun to play once I finally got it down
04:30When I did the harmonics, I would be on the 12th fret, but because I've got the capo up here
04:35on the 6th fret, it's up here on 18th
04:39And I have it here because just to match my voice
04:44I don't have a deep voice like a man, like the way Blaine Blake would have
04:48So I had to tape it up here to try and find a place to fit where I could sing
04:52it
04:53I always plant my ring finger
04:57And I always pick with my index and middle finger and my thumb
05:01So when I'm playing my thumb, I have to kind of go on autopilot as well
05:05Because I've got so much going on in the high strings
05:07So I just need to be able to do it without thinking
05:11My thumb is doing alternating bass
05:13And I kind of need to just be able to go on autopilot
05:15Because there's so much going on in the high strings
05:18So I just need to be able to do that without thinking
05:32And one of the main fundamentals of playing this kind of music
05:36Country blues and ragtime
05:37And yeah, I just need to be able to
05:40Your thumb really does need to be independent
05:42And able to just go do it
05:44It'll do its own thing so you can think about the melody notes
05:48So that was my version of Police Dog Blues by Blaine Blake
05:52Thanks so much to Guitar World for having me
05:55It's been super fun
