In a charged congressional hearing, Todd Lyons, acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), was pressed by lawmakers over controversial enforcement actions tied to recent Minneapolis shootings that resulted in civilian deaths. Amid intense questioning on accountability and use of force, Democratic Rep. LaMonica McIver directly asked Lyons if he believed he was “going to hell,” accusing him and the agency of having “blood on his hands.” Lyons declined to answer the question, defended his agency’s actions, and emphasized transparency efforts including releasing body‑camera footage. The exchange underscored deep political divisions over immigration enforcement and sparked significant public reaction.

00:00Think you're going to hell Mr. Lyons? I'm not going to end. Of course not. How many government
00:05will suspend? We are here for answers. We are here for accountability and we are here because
00:10people are dying. Let me repeat that. People are dying and you don't seem to care. So Mr. Lyons,
00:19I've heard my colleagues ask many questions over and over again and you cannot answer them. So let
00:24me ask you some questions that you may be able to answer. Mr. Lyons, do you consider yourself a
00:30religious man? Yes, ma'am. Oh yes. Okay. Well, how do you think judgment day will work for you
00:36with so much blood on your hands? I'm not going to entertain that question. Oh, okay. Of course not.
00:42Do you think you're going to hell Mr. Lyons? I'm not going to end. Of course not. How many government
00:47will suspend? The gentlelady will suspend. Chairman. A gentlelady will suspend. As I said,
00:52the issues we're debating here are important to ones that members feel deeply about.
00:57While vigorous disagreement is part of the legislative process, members are reminded that
01:02we must adhere to established standards of decorum and debate. The witnesses are here voluntarily
01:07and I will continue to remind members that while oversight is important, aggressively attacking
01:12those witnesses personally is inappropriate and not in keeping with the traditions of our committee.
01:18Mr. Chairman, I'm just asking a question. You guys are always talking about
01:22religion here in the Bible. I mean, it's okay for me to ask a question, right?
01:26Mr. Lyons, will you apologize to the family of Renee Good for being called a domestic terrorist
01:31by the president and his leadership? No, sir. Why not? Sir, I welcome the opportunity to speak to the
01:39family in private, but I'm not going to comment on any active investigation. Is she a domestic terrorist?
01:44Sir, I'm not going to comment on the investigation and the president and Secretary Noem are elected
01:51officials. That's your right to their comments, but as law enforcement, career law enforcement,
01:55we won't speak to any. Do you agree with their comments? Sir, I'm not going to go ahead and
01:59talk about any ongoing investigation. Will you apologize to the family of Alex Petty for also
02:04being called a domestic terrorist? Sir, again, I'm not going to speak to any ongoing investigation.
02:09You are aware, of course, and there's well-documented, numerous well-documented instances of people,
02:17American citizens, being asked to show and prove their citizenship. Do you know what other regimes
02:24in the 20th century required similar proof of citizenship? Yes, sir. What? Sir, there was
02:34very nefarious, various nefarious regimes that did that. Is Nazi Germany one? Yes, but I- Is the
02:41Soviet Union one? I honestly- Sir, I'm asking the questions. Is the Soviet Union one? Yes, sir,
02:45but I totally- I totally- This is the wrong type of questioning. No, what's- I'll tell you what the
02:51wrong type of thing is. But actually, sir, it's my time. It's my time. Reclaiming my time, sir.
02:55I'm reclaiming my time, Mr. Chairman. It's not the men and women of ICE that are out there doing it
03:00every day. So to say it's the men and women of ICE at Gestapo- Mr. Chairman, I'm reclaiming my time.
03:04I would like my time back, please. Please give me another 15 seconds because he was unnecessarily
03:09speaking. You said in your opening statement that references to ICE as the Gestapo or the secret
03:17police encourages threats against ICE agents. 100%. The problem is you have it backwards, sir.
03:24People are simply making valid observations about your tactics, which are un-American and outright
03:34fascist. So I have a simple suggestion. If you don't want to be called a fascist regime or secret
03:43police, then stop acting like one. But people are simply just observing what they are seeing. And that's
03:53why people are making those comments.
