00:00the planet is getting warmer there's no doubt about that but what can we do about it well a
00:08recently released paper suggests that humanity might use lunar regolith mined from the moon to
00:12build a sun shield around earth if it sounds a bit wild well it is but the paper was published
00:17by three real astrophysicists who posit that a dust shield situated one million miles from earth
00:22could help cool the planet just a bit but it wouldn't block out the sun entirely in fact they
00:27say by their calculations only 1.8 percent of sunlight would be obfuscated by the shield or the
00:32equivalent of six days of sunlight per year so why moon dust and how much would we need the paper
00:37outlines that lunar dust is the perfect shape to scatter the sun's rays just so and that we would
00:42likely need around 11 million tons of it to produce a shield wide enough and thick enough to give us
00:47the sunscreen we need but luckily we don't need to get it back to earth as their plan involves ejecting
00:51it from the surface of the moon itself still the team say we need to focus on stopping emissions
00:56first and foremost saying about their own plan quote our strategy may just be a moonshot but we
01:01should explore all possibilities in case we need more time to do the work here at home
